I would like to take a moment to appreciate the poetic beauty of a man named Stonehouse teaching us log building.

Hello Dave, thank you very much for your clear demonstration about what underscribing/ overscribing means in practical terms. Really great explanations! :-) However I have one question concerning the necessity of the relief space at the top. A log always shrinks radially, that means in width as well as in height. Now, if the log with the saddle shrinks also in height wouldn't this mean, that automatically free space is created, so that the log above could slide down the saddle even without this extra cut at the top of the notch? Or do I have a mistake in thinking here? Thank you very much
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385 Жыл бұрын
Technically if everything shrinks equally in all directions then you are correct, but by also giving the extra relief above it encouraged 100% of the log weight to be on the visible angled faces of the saddle. Just to encourage the tightest fit possible over time. The relief space is hidden so it’s a best case practice. Thanks.

Great video and very useful! However, being a W-European dummy at log building, I have a question with regards to the shrinking of the saddle notch and the logs. Due to the setting and shrinking of the saddle, the logs will come together. But, what if both logs (below and above the saddle) shrink as well? Hard to imagine that only the saddle would shrink? Or will the weight of the logs above finally have pushed down the entire structure after about two years? Keep up the great work, makes me even consider moving to Scandinavia and build my own log house!
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are correct, all the logs will shrink. The compressive forces and the weight of the logs above encourages the logs to remain tight as the building dries. Good luck with your build!

how long do you expect shrinkage to take place in order for the belly scribe to seal up?
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385 11 ай бұрын
It depends mainly on the size and weight of the logs but generally within 2 months in dry weather.

What determines the width of scribe (difference) between the belly and log cuts ?
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385
@bcschooloflogbuilding4385 3 жыл бұрын
The scribe setting is based on the widest gap once the log is rough notched prior to scribing. Check out our video on how to use scribes in this series for more info.

You prefer to over scribe the groove. I have noticed some log builders under scribe the notch. What are your reasons for your choice?
