I am just in love with what you are doing. There is something so fundamental about building a home with your hands with simple materials. This is like a fairy tale for adults! I am going to fell a few trees to use for rafters for a small camp, and I watched this to better understand how to fit the logs in the truss collar ties. It is really not the same kind of joint at all, but this is contextually super helpful. Thank you!

I used to do setting out of RC formwork - from buildings metro line... Your work is very impressive. Working with carpenters like you is a real honour. People like you always teach me a lot. Best wishes from a Polish guy who wants to build a log house in Japan ;)

Thanks for this video Nik. Great timing. I am a ways steps behind you (just starting my second course of logs) and the scribers I am using are clumsy to use and have to be reset to plumb each time I change the setting or sharpen the pencil (Veritas Scriber), so I am going to trade them in for a better pair. I have emailed the company you recommended and let them know I found them through your YT channel. The challenge will be I am in Canada and can't wait too long for them to arrive as I race against winter to complete the cabin :)

On 1:09 you explain give me the idea how the Inca stones walls in Cuzco, Peru. It was a mystery thousand years. If they apply it to stone, is it they have like your steps, put the stone on one on one, then measure it , took it down, cut it and put it back?

Good job Nik and wonderful clarifications on each stage of the work. There is a soul in your work, and this is the most important of all that is happening, so at least most of the old generation continue to think. Could you share the name of the manufacturer of your log scriber please.

I used a ink pencil(marks ink when wet) to mark and spray the log with water, i also scribe deep enough so no chinking is needed. i did that 35 yrs ago on a few houses, is this a better way now ? I'm getting ready to build a new log house. thanks

@@organicdudranch I’d love to do something like this. Nic’s build over the last few years has been one of the best things I’ve ever watched. Watching this one last night (missed it somehow before), I wondered why the first log of each wall is cut in half, rather than scribed around the concrete pads. Would the log not be stronger if it retains more mass? Where are you in the world mate?

@@electrician1602 hi lan,i am in west michgan firs, did one log house here a few in oregon lodgepole pine. Your correct about the strenght ,it sually doesnt require that strenght though. Many times ive split logs to connect properly with full ones, i typo-ed on my earlier post,i swedish scribe ,likely you are familiar with that.fairly precise. Where are you ?

@@organicdudranch it’s a thing of beauty, the connection of the logs. I live in London, England, but mainly work in the west of England. I’m desperate to leave the city, it’s not for me, I want isolation, peace, I want to buy some land and work it. I think I belong in a different time!

Why can't you just laythe top log on the lower one and then cut in between with a chainsaw so that they lay perfectly flat onto each other? Perhaps cut twice or even three times?
