Hark! now the Drums beat up again, For all true Soldiers Gentlemen, Then let us list, and march I say, Over the Hills and far away Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. All Gentlemen that have a Mind,To serve the Queen that's good and kind;Come list and enter into Pay,Then o'er the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. No more from sound of Drum retreat,While Marlborough, and Gallaway beat,*The French and Spaniards every Day,When o'er the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. Here's Forty Shillings on the Drum,For those that Volunteers do come,With Shirts, and Cloaths, and present Pay,When o'er the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. The[n] Prentice Tom he may refuse,To wipe his angry Master's Shoes; For then he's free to sing and play,Over the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. We then shall lead more happy Lives,By getting rid of Brats and Wives,That Scold on both Night and Day,When o'er the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away. For if we go 'tis one to Ten,But we return all Gentlemen,All Gentlemen as well as they,When o'er the Hills and far away; Chorus: Over the Hills and o'er the Main,To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,Over the Hills and far away.

I've always seen this as Britain's non royal anthem, but the people, you can hear the Englishness, Welshness, Scottishness and Irishness in it, it's truly wonderful.

I won't sing the "Royal Anthem" 'cause I'll never bow the knee to a German Queen and a Greek Prince. I love this tune and wouldn't mind it at my funeral.

@@EnglanderUK you could simply support a different line of succession, such as the Stuarts, although you will be led to Germany once again. However, we are historically interconnected with Germany, and Queen Elizabeth can, with certainty, trace her lineage back through the centuries, monarch, after monarch

But also the sadness of the essential professional soldier, usually an economic conscript to fight in a war that - other than WWII - is not his, not his loved ones, but his masters'. God save poor soldiers and God damn their masters!

The thing is, during the Peninsular Campaign against Napoleon - the French had a lot more troops in Spain than the British could bring to bear. (WWII was not a new thing to Britain). So - what they'd do - was land a bunch of Red Coats some where on the Peninsula - who would then go about stirring up trouble - and then when the French got together enough troops to do something about them - they'd just get back on their ships and go land somewhere else. They couldn't really hold anything - but - they tied down a much greater number of French Troops than they were investing themselves. This meant - that those French troops could not be used somewhere else. Thus: _Over the Hills and over the Main_ _To Flanders, Portugal and Spain_ _King George Commands and We Obey_ _Over the hills and far away._ (For anyone who doesn't know - the "Main" sometimes referred to as the Bounding Main was - the Ocean). .

Eternal respect for those who answered the call. And gave the last thing they had… their lives… not for king and country. But for their family and their band of brothers.

Here's forty shillings on the drum, For those who'll volunteer to come, To 'list and fight the foe today, Over the hills and far away. O'er the hills and o'er the main, Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain, King George commands and we obey, Over the hills and far away. When duty calls me, I must go, To stand and face another foe, But part of me will always stray, Over the hills and far away. O'er the hills and o'er the main, Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain, King George commands and we obey, Over the hills and far away. If I should fall to rise no more, As many comrades did before, Then ask the fifes and drums to play, Over the hills and far away. O'er the hills and o'er the main, Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain, King George commands and we obey, Over the hills and far away. x3

@@michaelshore2300 Correct. This was written during the War of Spanish Succession, during which rifles weren't really a thing. The association with the rifles came a lot later (probably moreseo due to John Tams and Sharpe than the actual 95th Rifles).
