The 1941 movie Sargent York with Gary Cooper is a movie that I would stay up late to watch, it never gets old. As for that action in Oct of 1918, he did his duty as it was understood to be. And became a legend in his own time. We Americans tend to take a lot for granted, it mostly because we are so secure and well so well off in spite of every roadblock are put in place by the government. Plus throw in the fact that guns are very very common in our country, and up till recent times boys would learn to shoot from their fathers, one of the reasons why raising an effective army quickly is really an American thing. When War was declared in 1917 in a very short period of time 2 million Soldiers were in France and therefore that big push that York was a part of that would end the war in a month's time from the action that would see him receive the Medal of Honor.

The folks in Yorks platoon had some disagreements with this. Not to say that he wasnt impressive and wasnt involved in a lot of actions and probably led them, but he wasnt on his own. His notoriety comes more from 2 officers that needed a hero so that they could be in charge of something that was recognized so they wouldnt get mustered out at the end of the war. Alvin York had complete discretion over the movie. Nothing went in there that he didnt want in there. The others were put in for medals, but they were quashed because of the PR. Decades later they were finally awarded.

Your not lying brother!!! I had my mama tit in one hand and a rifle in the other when I was a young un. BUT my dad taught me to respect the weapon and how to use and be safe with it!!! Then I joined the Army in January 1982 and they taught me the opposite.

Thats why the US military and reserve are have some of the best marksman if not the best in the world. We grow up learning to shoot (at least most of us) and when called into service many are already marksman. The military just gives us the ammo to make us even better lol.

So the latest investigating concludes that York was singled out to take the role of hero, by his direct superiors. There where 17 men with him including a Sergeant in charge who led the mission. It’s in a book review by the WW1 national history museum

Id love to see a piece on Marcelino Serna a Mexican national from El Paso TX who did a greater deed than York but being he was brown and didn't speak good English he was passed on for big medals from America but received high medals from France.

@GeorgeSemel3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he sure would have liked the Glock 17 or 19. More so an M-16 or one of the variants of that rifle. But in 1918 guns were made of steel and wood. The M-1903 Springfield was and is a fine rifle.

You’re in the wrong place. York’s attack took place about 200 meters south of the mismarked “York trail”. Please read Michael Kelly’s book “ Hero on the Western Front” and James Carl Nelson’s book “The York Patrol” They have done archeological forensic studies that prove the correct location of the engagement and it wasn’t where you are standing.

Think of the job sgt York could have done on the Germans with an m14. No, no not that pos m16 we were forced to carry in Vietnam. The first or second time it jammed going thru a 20 round magazine, the Germans would have had him.
@DK-gy7ll3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your service. The early version of the M16 you and your buddies carried had not been thoroughly tested and de-bugged prior to issue, and it cost a lot of young men's lives. Eventually the problems were all sorted out and from around 1970-on the M16 was a dependable rifle, but it should never have been deployed like that before it was ready for Prime Time.

Does it really matter what rifle he used? The Springfield was a stolen Mauser design anyway, and the Americans were still paying the court-ordered royalties to the Germans for the design until the war....just saying.
