Good eye, when we look at the earlier episodes, it makes it sad that stan painted his little boat as ''stan O war'' in memory of his brother and genuinely wanted to spend time with Dipper and Mabel because he sees their relationship as a reflection of his past. Let's be honest, parents aside did stan really want to take care of two kids while he was running the mystery shack and at the same time trying to make the portal work, the summer was more for stan to kick back and relax with his great-niece and great-nephew (he's been estranged from his family long enough that they think ''Stanley pines'' is dead) and to reminisce about his past while watching Dipper and Mabel's relationship with envy because at the back of his mind, he probably assumes Ford is dead.

Something that always stuck with me is how Stanley while creative and crafty, didn't even graduate high school and only made as far as he did by copying Ford's school work. Stan thought of himself as the dumb twin. But Stan still spent *30 years* studying and learning from the Journals and actually managed to quickly fix the machine once he got all 3 journals and the secret black light messages. And I remember being so proud with Stan because in a way he showed that he was more book smart than anyone gave him credit for, including himself. Basically I want Dipper and Ford to be talking complete nerd stuff and for Stan to completely understand and respond, shocking everyone listening lol.

The most interesting thing about McGucket is that he stayed in Gravity Falls. He wasn't a native. He had a nice home with a wife and kid waiting for him. And yet, when he saw what was on the other side of the portal, when he fought with Ford, when he stormed out and said he was done with it all... he still stayed. Maybe he felt so changed that he couldn't go back home, maybe he thought Ford would come around, idk. And his son! His son, who sees him as an embarrassment and avoids him, came! He came to Gravity Falls! Why? To reconnect? To take care of McGucket? Who knows! But he came, and like his father, he stayed! He avoids his father but he doesn't just leave him behind and go back home?? Ugh, these characters are so interesting.
@theleonpasta73362 ай бұрын
Very true, it always struck me as weird that his son came to Gravity Falls despite no mention of Mcgucket bringing his family along when he came to Gravity Falls to help Ford. Considering we never see Mcgucket's wife maybe she died at some point during those 30 years (after raising their son presumably) and after that his Son moved to GF to be somewhat close with his remaining family, but after moving he realized Mcgucket was too far gone and simply went on with life knowing his Dad was "okay" and occasionally seeing him but never being willing to actually hang out with him

30:04 "Dipper is like 'You're the author of the Journal !' and Ford is like 'You read my diary ?'" This is so accurate, lmao
@SebastienGendron-uk4po2 ай бұрын
Funny when I think about the mystery of who the author was, I can't help but think of how much the clues were scattered throughout the show to where it looks obvious. The mystery shack was the author's old house but renovated into a tourist trap, the hidden room with the body swap carpet was fords old experiment, and the portal underneath the mystery shack heck the townspeople knew who the author was but really only knew him as the local weirdo who kept to himself until his brother took his place. This whole time Dipper has been closer to the truth than he realized (he was living in the renovated house of the author). When I think back to why Gideon wanted the journals confused me. He thought that having the journals close to each other would open the gateway to ''unimaginable power'', even if he did get the journals, he didn't have the portal like stan did, all he would have been the codes and full illustrations of the portal (wouldn't surprise me that he didn't even know about the portal since he skimming the monster sections and not about the author's occasional exposition about his life). Gideon and Dipper did elevate the author of the journals to almost mythical status, assuming that he was an extraordinary genius with vast, almost supernatural ambitions. This perception was built on the mysterious nature of the journals themselves, which were filled with incredible knowledge about the paranormal and the unexplained phenomena of Gravity Falls. When the author was revealed to be Stanford Pines, or "Ford," he turned out to be more of an ordinary man with an academic background-a genius in his own right, but still very human. Ford is a brilliant scientist and inventor with a PhD, but his goals were rooted in curiosity and a genuine desire to understand the mysteries of the universe, not in the pursuit of power or grandeur. This contrast between the perception of the author and the reality of Ford's character adds a layer of complexity to the story. Sorry for the long comment😅😉

@SebastienGendron-uk4po2 ай бұрын
@@Cottencandycat987 I know right, Dipper started writing in it (not knowing there is invisible ink in a couple of blank pages) instead of getting his own journal to write in. I was p*ssed when Dipper started writing in it with his 12-year-old handwriting in what was essentially (what I interpreted from the first episode since I did not know how old the journal was) a 19th-century work of art that was barely keeping itself together from years of neglect. I wish Dipper had made copies of the pages in case the worst had happened. I'm amazed the journal managed to hold itself together with the amount of physical abuse it absorbed (The journal has been dropped, tossed, and squished multiple times in various episodes, usually during chases or action sequences. Journal 3 gets soaked in water during a confrontation in the bunker etc)
@Cottencandycat9872 ай бұрын
@@SebastienGendron-uk4po honestly if ford wasnt happy that he now has a little helper/student type or if what Dipper wrote down wasn't that helpful or just kinda ruined his book he'd be absolutely pissed so luckily Dipper is almost exactly like him adding good bits rather than only dairy like stuff over the important knowledge
@SebastienGendron-uk4po2 ай бұрын
@@Cottencandycat987 I see your point. But if my handwriting was inferior to elegant calligraphy I wouldn't bother writing in the same book. I don't care if Dipper adds extra information as long as it's, not the 30-year-old original journal that looks like it could crumble from physical abuse (he could have made copies of each page and created his own journal with as many blank pages as he wants. Dipper is lucky the author just so happens to be related to him) Ford's handwriting is a blend of an elegant, old-fashioned script with a touch of scientific precision, which matches his intellectual and meticulous nature. The letters are neatly formed, with flowing curves and a slightly slanted style typical of traditional calligraphy, evoking a sense of care and artistry in every word. This beautiful, almost timeless handwriting, combined with the worn, stained pages of the journal, does give the impression that the work could be from the 19th century. The style adds to the sense that the journal is a carefully crafted, long-lost artifact, passed down through generations or hidden away for decades. Ford's handwriting stands in stark contrast to Dipper's less refined, youthful scrawl, further reinforcing the idea of the journal being something ancient and delicate, deserving of careful preservation. Dipper was lucky he didn't write over the invisible ink parts of the blank pages. Sorry for the long comment

To me the whole tragedy of this episode and the Stans in general was that you can't really blame neither of them. There's always another point of view, another thing to track back. You can't point fingers because both their feelings are valid and both of them are at fault. I'm somehow of a newcomer in the fandom (I watched it growing up but never interacted with the community) and the way people talk about the fight and pick sides really pisses me of. It feels downright purposely misread. It's such a complex situation. I may have a favoritism for Stanley, just because I see myself a little more in him, but villanizing Ford for wanting his own life is crazy. YOu don't bring much attention to this but I both love and hate how Ford weaponizes the Stan O' War in his argument. He opens the conversation with what seems like an invitation, "Hey dude remember our promise to each other to be together forever in spite of the world? Do that but without the most fundamental part." Like Ford seems to have forgotten why they needed the boat, that he thinks it was just sailing and not being with each other. I also love how Simmons utilizes the higher register when Stan gets burned on the whatevermajig, like for a brief moment the old, young Ford is shining through, the ford who would do anything to help his brother. The second he sees he's actually fighting his brother, the 17 years of friendship finally pushing through the one moment of divergence, he wants to take it all back, he sounds like a child. Same with Hirsch when Ford falls through the portal and Stan is trying to turn it back on, actual consequences of them fighting have Arrived and the child in Stan wants nothing more than to undo it.

Kind of a small thing but I like that even when homeless Stan isn't skinny and actively seems to be at his heaviest. Gaining weight isn't just about how much you eat but also what you eat and Stan wouldn't have the means to be eating healthy at this point, I mean he's probably living mostly off cheap junk food and whatever restaurant he thinks he could reasonably dine and dash at and it shows. Meat and fresh produce is also pretty expensive and Stan wouldn't have the luxury at this point to choose quality over quantity, plus he wouldn't have a refrigerator living out of his car so any food he does get would have to be able to last without that. I just like the representation of a character not getting enough to eat while still being overweight.
@nyandoesthings2 ай бұрын
I gained 100 pounds while homeless. You know what's cheap, can be made with only a microwave, and doesn't need to be refrigerated? not a balanced diet. more like 4 packages of ramen and a bag of chips a day, plus one "better" meal a week from any of various sources (mostly someone picking up burger king, but about twice a year a bunch of people would pitch in for this guy to make everyone a low country boil to share). Also, soda was cheaper than bottled water which didn't help either. and living out of his car, stan wouldn't have even had the microwave option like i did. he's just got burger king and chips (and maybe based on him trying to buy only a loaf of bread,, he just ate bread straight up? just plain? but maybe there was jelly at the shack still or something. i imagine he'd eat peanut butter straight from the container, but ive tried to eat just jelly alone and it's not. something im physically capable of personally.)

About Ford going to Backup's More instead of a better college, a theory I like a lot is that after Stan was kicked out, Ford fell into depression and just lost interest at anything and stopped attending to school or stop paying attention to classes and so he ended up with bad grades, or not good enough grades to get a scholarship to a good or even average college, so he ended up in the only college his family could afford.
@fuzzysweater123 ай бұрын
I like the idea of this, however, this theory’s kind of contradicted by that fact that Ford was still able to graduate as valedictorian of his class in high school. I think that the more likely scenario is that Ford was so set on attending West Coast Tech, that he failed to consider any other reputable colleges as alternatives, & thus, got stuck with Backupsmore.

2:01:30 I’d argue that almost all of Stan’s clear not Ford-ness and the Town’s acceptance of that can be explained by Stan’s existence as a Grieving Twin. In world obviously Stanley constructs the lie that Stanley died in a Car Crash & Stanford is still around, but either Stan dying at all reveals both identities as Twins, and even without knowing a person intimately you know that loss is horrific, loss changes people, especially loss of family members even if those family members where estranged. “Stanford’s” insane switch of personality is really easily explained as a Grieving Twin, and it’s not even a wrong assumption as Stanley is still a grieving twin regardless of the lie

@aborealisglfry3 ай бұрын
3:45:11 a little off topic, but i think it’s very interesting that Ford is upset that mabel and dipper were intended to stay with him (but couldnt . For obvious reasons), but he seems largely apathetic to the fact that the things filbrick intended Ford to have (fez, suit) went to Stan. Idk it just feels like Ford distanced himself from his parents (mainly filbrick) and now couldnt give less of a care of anything connected to him. Like he’s very protective of what’s his and is intended to be his. He rambles about what happened to his house and his various possessions in J3 and mentions it more than once in the show. The fact he’s very insistent on his house, is very obviously bitter on the relationship with Mabel and dipper he had missed out on up until that point, but something like his fathers fez and suit (STRICTLY intended for him, the latter he mentioned wanting to wear to receive some grand award) not really bothering him in the slightest (hell not even mentioning that he wants it back or that he begrudgingly lets stan have it or anything along those lines) is very interesting characterization to me. The fact we DO see ford with the outfit intended for him in the last episode, but he instantly takes off the fez the second he doesn’t need to wear it anymore kinda adds to it In a weird way. I’m definitely reading too much into this little detail but i thought it was worth noting

4:05:57 (Charlie Kelly Pepe Silvia posing) Okay but can we talk about the beds. It's been 9 years and I just realized this about the beds and it's making me crazy. Stan and Ford have a bunk bed growing up. Stan is on the bottom bunk, which aligns with his fear of heights. But it also perfectly encapsulates the hierarchy going on, with Ford the golden child on top, his head in the clouds, and Stan on bottom, literally in his brother's shadow. But he's okay with that; it's a comforting shelter from the realities of growing up. When that shelter is ripped away he doesn't know what to do. Meanwhile, Dipper and Mabel have adjacent beds on equal ground. Beds where they can look each other in the face and have a conversation. It's such a beautiful visual representation of the different levels of communication skills each set of twins have.
@jamiee73673 ай бұрын
14:10 There's an interesting detail here that isn't mentioned. When young Stan & Ford are writing their names on the cave wall, Ford signs his first name using his usual cursive handwriting, but writes their last name with all-caps block letters that match closer to how Stan signs _his_ first name; additionally, the camera cuts to only show Ford writing in the last name. This makes it look as though _Ford_ was the one who wrote in the name "Stanley". Rather than being an error, this is intended, I believe, to delay the reveal of Stan having taken Ford's identity until the intended point in the episode, by making it temporarily appear as though "Stanley" is the name of the Author-twin, rather than "Stanford".
@goldsk58773 ай бұрын
Not sure if this was intended but if you compare the handwriting, it turns out Ford's CAPITAL LETTER font he uses in the journal sometimes is actually the same as Stan's font (and that goes for the font used to quote Bill in the lost journal pages too). So ironically Ford can forge Stan's handwriting perfectly

Just finished the video and it was incredible! I wasn’t too active in the fanbase back when the show was airing, so it’s always really fascinating to hear about what the fandom was up to. Though I admit, I did wind up buying into the theory about Dipper’s eyes in Not What He Seems xD I also really enjoy all the analysis you do into body language and expressions. As someone who regularly watches shows frame-by-frame, I’ve always loved the amount of detail in this episode. One of my favorite bits is a subtle moment during Mabel’s “hug it out” scene (1:27:30). The first time she suggests it, Ford briefly stops writing and looks at Stan, as if he’s gauging Stan’s receptiveness to the idea. Stan doesn’t react and so after a beat, Ford goes back to scribbling while Mabel repeats herself. I have no idea what Ford would do if Stan actually did try to hug it out, but that tiny moment makes the whole scene for me.

3:05:29 Bill has been shown in Sock Opera to be capable of possessing inanimate objects, but is explained further in Book of Bill that Bill can possess anything as long as it has a neuron. It’s later shown in the book that Bill can possess corpses, which Ford witnesses while on a trip to the Valentino’s funeral home. So Ford turning the skeleton is likely a trauma response or at least his paranoia and anxiety telling him to make extra sure Bill isn’t watching.

part of me wonders if part of the reason Stanford went to Backupsmore is cause it's the only college he could see his brother maybe getting into. Stan wasn't keeping in touch with his family (for obvious reasons) and how he left probably left a bitter taste in Ford's mouth. As upset as he was, and probably still was, about Stan breaking his machine, accident or not, he still likely missed his brother. So, in a desperate attempt to hopefully find him, he goes to a college who's tagline is literally "Everyone is welcome here!" hoping that included his brother, unaware that at this point Stan was like halfway across the country.
