Plus, like Aang mentions later on, she didn't technically kill him, he was just too stubborn to step out of the way while the cliff was crumbling under him. This also shows that Kyoshi holds herself to a great level of personal responsibility. It makes me think that she has some regrets related to her inaction at some point in her adventure.

@joeyginise60513 жыл бұрын
I think there pacifism might be more in line with Christian Pacifism. Air Benders don't go looking for fights, but when a fight comes to them, they stand there ground and defend themselves and each other. They just had the misfortune of facing an enemy they could not hope to defeat.
@HollowPurple-if2co3 жыл бұрын
The fact that he's the Avatar means he can't be a traditional pacifist. Due to there being several air bendering Avatars, it's easy to assume that this is just ingrained in their teachings.
@RacingSnails643 жыл бұрын
Funny analogy but how many times does the gang straight up merk a major antagonist? Everything I can think of is non-lethal. Freezing Jet to a tree, cuffing Azula, hell it's literally the climax of the entire series that Aang didn't want to kill Ozai, the main villain. You could even push this to LOK with Korra not just sparing but comforting Kuvira after their final battle. Self-defense/intervention isn't the same as taking a life. And don't conflate Kyoshi with Aang either. After she gives her (lack of) advice on the back of the lion turtle in book 3, Aang says "I knew I shouldn't have asked Kyoshi..." It's pretty clear he thinks of her as an imperfect Avatar.
@Squishito3 жыл бұрын
@@RacingSnails64 Yet they seemingly disregard the lives of all the mooks and grunts they encounter. There is several scenes where they're fighting people and the goons almost certainly perish. There is no way the non-bender soldiers in The Blue Spirit that Aang blasts into the ground survive. Even if they did, the attack did not seem to be held back or pacifistic at all. They would be gravely injured beyond recovery smashing into the stone ground at that force. Aang is pretty violent in the show and several times has killed on screen anyway, just in the Avatar State. Avatar State spirit fish Aang drowns all the Fire Nation soldiers invading the north pole and kills Zhao. I still think that counts, they died by his very hand (it definitely counts as he was about to kill Ozai in the Avatar State and stopped, which means Aang would consider that counting). He also kills animals, there is a scene in season 3 where he blasts a fly into oblivion, and he cuts the head of a buzzard wasp that tries to take Momo. Even if you can argue that some of these attacks could have had survivors, a lot of his attacks upon his enemies (outside of obviously recurring main villains that aren't allowed to be obliterated yet because plot) are portrayed as incredibly harmful and reckless, and don't seem to concern the person surviving at all. Not a lot of restraint going on at all. The Rough Rhino guy in the video clearly could have died, it's a miracle he survived that fall honestly. Aang was not fazed at all by this. But then in the finale Aang is having a cry about killing Ozai of all people, when it's been his main goal built up since day one. It's one of the most annoying parts of the finale to me aside from the last minute lion turtle plot bending, if they wanted it to end on a pacifist dilemma they shouldn't have had so many scenes where he obliterates people. I mean I don't mind them wrecking their enemies (the show creators confirmed it would have been more violent but they had to tone it down because Nickelodeon), but when it becomes a huge issue at the end even though they've been doing it stone faced this whole time, it's inconsistent and frustrating to watch. I mean it doesn't ruin the ending, but it's irritating because usually this show is so thought out and they check these kind of details. The pacifist no kill rule thing at the end felt like a last minute change because of Nickelodeon excec censorship or something.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that line Aang said to the mayor about how he wasn't going to help him. That shit was cold and so funny. Also can we talk about the Rough Rhinos? Those guys are awesome, the part I love the most is that there is some continuity in their appearance as a sort of special forces unit for the fire nation. They all have clear references to jobs in the fire nation that we have seen before that they must have worked in. The one guy is obviously a former Yuyan Archer, and one of them looks incredibly like that one trebuchet operator from I think the Siege of the North Pole. Really cool.
@JimboJamble2 жыл бұрын
The Yuyan archer is named Vachir, and we actually see him in the comics. Ozai hires him to track down and assassinate some guy, but when Vachir fails (through no fault of his own, really), Ozai banishes him. He somehow got picked up by the Rhinos afterwards.

I know there isn't very many parallels between Zuko and Aang at all in this episode but it's interesting to see Aang with what looks a lot like Zuko's scar when his carnival statue got torched, and I think the writers were kinda going for it here

Love the unhinged energy in this video. I do a similar analytical series about Ben 10 and it's nice to see someone else do it for another show. You hit a lot of the same beats and details I'm looking for. Fantastic series. Looking forward to finishing all your reviews.

@@lomiification it takes it's political cues from Imperial Japan and the 1600s Shogunate, but they also take a lot of cultural cues from South Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia. Kyoshi is more directly largely based on Japan in clothing and buildings and names, specifically Hokkaido which, if I recall correctly, (I'm not an expert) is considered something of a backwater by the rest of Japan.

around 7:10 Chin stomps before he approaches and squares up with Kyoshi, and we hear the iconic earthbender thump and grumble during that stomp. It's not shown but I think that first stomp is meant to be the footprint used in evidence, while the shot focusing on his foot during his square up is wrongly animated to be in focus when the first stomp is the footprint one.

1. Thank you for pointing out the wheel haha that always bothered me. and 2. you're super right about how this ep isn't as bad as people remember. When I was showing Avatar to someone, I skipped this one and a couple others cuz we were on a time crunch, and after rewatching it later I definitely regretted it. Zuko and Iroh really do carry episodes where the main plot might be weaker, generally.
@maddie96023 жыл бұрын
I think that might be a large part of why The Great Divide is so poorly thought-of. There are other episodes that have weak A plots, but Divide didn't have a Zuko B plot to save it.

This is the first I've heard of anyone disliking this episode. Whenever anyone mentions their least favorite episode it is unanimously 'the Breakfast Club Episode' or 'the Beach Episode' and no one's ever hinted at anything else coming close.
