One thing I always liked, Light got power and immediately planned how he was going to use it. Lelouch got power and integrated it into an already existent plan.
@MrEffectfilms9 ай бұрын
Another interesting point of comparison is how horrified they both were the first time they used their power. Once Light confirmed for sure that the Death Note was real he went into a full on existential crisis and his mind basically snapped. When Lelouche used his Geass and made those guys kill themselves he was horrified by it until he realized what he could then do with this power. By all accounts, Lelouche should have been far worse than Light given their reactions, instead he tried to save an entire nation and people while Light tried to literally rule the world.

@@chaosryansyep, it’s conviction. The end of Death Note is proof positive that Light was just another criminal. When he’s finally caught, he acts just like every scum bag does. Cries and makes excuses. Lelouch has principles, and will fight, and will die for them.

@@chaosryans i think another thing is that this is one of the few times "redemption through death" actually means something. personally, i find the concept incredibly stupid. people are, in most cases, always more valuable alive if they actually seek redemption. if the most awful yet powerful people in the world gave up their ways and legitimately wanted to help humanity, unaliving (sorry sometimes yt dislikes that word) them would be throwing away their intrinsic value that they have with their mere existence. the only reason we can't do that is that unfortunately most people like that are too awful to where realistic circumstances would not be able to change their minds. lelouch's death was directly the solution to the problem and the only way to solve the problem. he wasn't just dying to "atone", he directly and deliberately knew that his death was what needed to happen to fix the world.

Remember, Code Geass is an anime original. It did not have a manga to adapt. That's why it can do stuff like that Knighmare vs. Tank sequence and Leoluch's Geass Visions, which are both elements that would have been hard to get across in manga form. I think Lelouch helping out the people in the truck is interesting when contrasted with his lax attitude towards the dead from the broadcast. It seems to highlight the conflict between his desire to not care about the lives and wellbeing of others (so long as he can accomplish his end goal) and his inner empathy. Despite proclaiming that one can't change the world, he's the first to try and help people when they're in front of him.
@overanalyzinganime9 ай бұрын
Uuuuuu. Really nice call out! I didn't even connect the fact that he said that moments before attempting to do something himself.
@Mavuika_Gyaru9 ай бұрын
I think the fact that they were right in front of him was the reason why. He has no power to help the ones dying, so why care? But he'll help if he has the ability. I don't think it has to do with an internal conflict
@Yodah979 ай бұрын
He's also a take charge kind of guy. Of course he'd rather run in and take care of things, rather than trusting the mob or britannia authority. If there were injured people, he'd immediatly get to first aid, pulling people out, giving orders to whoever could move, etc. He's putting himself at more risk than the average citizen, too. Leoluch is in hiding, after all, and appearing on TV as a local hero or even having his video shared online could blow his cover. We see later that Clovis recognizes him immediately on sight. No one who's seen Leoluch as a kid ever has trouble recognizing him as an teenager (he's 17 now).
@SebasTian583239 ай бұрын
This also plays into something Shirley mentions later, that the reason she first noticed him was because he was helping someone. So it seems to be a habit of his.

I believe part of it is stemming from the "O God, give us the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to know the one from the other." type mentality. There is nothing he can do for the dead so he feels no emotion towards them, he has the serenity to accept it for what it is. Meanwhile when the truck crashes in front of him he immediately knows there may be people who need saving, and in this moment he CAN do something, so he is immediately compelled into action. Honestly I view it as a pretty nice part of his character and it's largely how he acts through the series. He treats inevitabilities with a calm and collected demeanor, while if he screws up it emotionally destroys him.
@MercenaryWao-l5b6 ай бұрын
Fun detail. When Kallen is getting into the Glasgow, we see her take her coat off and drop it on the floor. Later, when Lelouch considers using a terrorist communicator as a bargaining chip to get the military to help him, Kallen's coat is folded up beside him. In short, Lelouch is so obsessed about orderliness that he stops to fold up a coat that he sees a random terrorist discard. While he is still stuck in an 18-wheeler with another terrorist and a possible biologic weapon, and while also being shot at by the military. Just a magnificent example of show-don't-tell characterization.

Some stuff I wanna note for part 2 because I really hope this gets observed: Mechs, especially in anime, tend to be inspired heavily by air combat. Code Geass goes an extra mile, when Lelouch captures a knightmare he uses its sensors and the enemy Datalink (the real world term for what he explains in the show) to coordinate rather than fight directly. This lines up with an often overlooked role in air combat, the AWACS, which uses a heavy duty radar with no weapons and acts as a flying command post. Also no aviation nut post would be complete without identifying the planes in the opening. F-15s and YF-23s are both featured, though they look like sci-fi ships they're real aircraft (though the YF-23 was a cancelled prototype).

Could've added that the prince's poor attitude is meant to desensitize the audience from the gravity of Lelouch's murder, Lelouch being the protagonist of the series means that the audience needs to be entertained by him, like him and understand his rage; therefore those who stand against him should be seen as callous, racist, genuinely terrible people if Lelouch is going to actively fight against them. I also feel like this is why the theme of racism is so commonly imbued into the upper classes, that Lelouch despises, as they are responsible for what happened to him during his childhood. Thanks so much for entering this anime; I love your videos
@jayt96086 ай бұрын
Rivalz is also a member of that upper class as well, and while he is somewhat racist, it is not intended with actual malice. He would be more like the average person in the 1940s before the Civil Rights movement kicked off. Casual racist comments might be made behind closed doors or with intimates, but they would knock their child into the next county for disrespecting and adult of darker complexion. His attitude toward them in general is wrong, but he would help someone across the street no matter their ethnicity. He is a racist, but not a bigot. Nor would he approve of the wanton murder that enthused Jeremiah. I think that we are meant to see the absolute worst in the aristocracy, though Clovis is not actually as bad as he is portrayed and had done some good prior to his panicked order to cleanse the ghetto. It is not the casual racist like Rivalz that are the targets of Lelouch but rather the murderous and effete elite that are his target. By targeting the ghetto in an attempt to save his hide, Prince Clovis set himself up to be the first of many deaths.

what bullshit are you talking about? there is no occupation in gaza. gaza was independent for 20 years and is now are at war for their actions. and there are no colonies or colonization in gaza at gaza, just war. it is more like if the japanese first attack and killed a lot of americans, and then the US turn the tide and bomb them. just like in real life. sounds to me like your just searching to make it political more then anything else.

Knightmare Frames are also kinda a pun because there are the equivalent to a knight's horse or knight's mare if you will.

Love the way he made a 40 min video out of a 19 min episode, that there is called passion...

With regards to Nagata's injury, it's possible some shrapnel or glass hit him instead of a direct bullet from the knightmare. Not that this matters, as it's a small issue anyway

Just recently watched code geass and enjoying this video But I have to highly recommend eminence in shadow to you. You might not pick up on everything first time but if you enjoy a lot of show dont tell, it does a pretty good job. I watched it when it came out for the funny parody entertainment. One day I just had an itch to watch it again and found the world and setting incredibly deep and consistent. It shows you SO MUCH in broad daylight but you just dont know what it al l means yet. On top of you'll catch that Cid picks up on a lot of subtle queues.

5:09 I don't know if you left it out intentionally, because it was revealed later in the series, but I would note, that the reason for the war ending so soon, can't only be attributed to the differences in power, but also the fact, that Suzaku killed his father, the prime minister of Japan.

I know doing 2 series at at once is so much work, but my suggestions once you're done one of them is to do either Kaiji, or Jo Jo's Bizzare Adventure:)

A suggestion if you ever see this, I think you would enjoy these anime from a while back if you've ever heard of them Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze they're each about 12-24 episodes each. really good but confusing, in neon evangelion kind of way. great series to over-analyze

Love to see that this is the next anime your covering such a great show! Have you ever checked out One Outs? It's a similar vibe to Code Geass and Death Note but people don't talk much about it, I imagine because it's centered around baseball and not murder mystery or global politics/ sci-fi like the other two. I would definitely recommend it if you haven't though.

One thing I really liked about the opening is the showcase of the invasion via a simple plan / showcase of forces. The first time I watched the opening I didn't even see the japanese defence forces / didn't recognise them as such. It shows how insanely less powerful their defences were.
