27:08 I'll explain that. :) In the Japanese dub, when L lashes out at Matsuda and slaps his hand, he yells "Matsuda", without the "-san" honorific which he is supposed to be using, as it is the polite way of addressing him in their co-workeresque relationship in the Japanese language, but he forgets in the heat of the moment. So he corrects himself by saying "I mean, Matsuda-san, please stop." I guess this is why the English translation is "Please don't, Mr. Matsuda". So yeah, this is why Matsuda is confused and says "Matsuda?" back, as in "Did you just address me like that?" Also, Happy Birthday! :)

When misa forfeits ownership REM says something along the lines of “don’t worry I’ll keep the love you have for light yagami” so I always assumed she got rid of the trauma of being taken and tortured along with the memories because we know REM loves Misa. I’ll look up the clip and get the exact quote Edit: “When this is done you will forget everything about shinigami and the death note, it’s ok the human being that you love is light yagami. I promise those feelings will remain. So misa, forfeit ownership of the death note. And leave everything to light yagami.” So to me it feels like REM can control what all memories are lost
@WolforNuva2 жыл бұрын
Ryuuk also says that if Light got rid of the note _he_ would have to remove all knowledge of the death note, in other words it's something the Shinigami does, not an automatic effect of the note. So I'd guess that how much memory is wiped is up to the individual shinigami to decide; Rem wanted to protect Misa, so she removed a lot of traumatic memories, Ryuuk on the other hand only wiped what he had too, since he's not playing sides.
@gabrielvalentin.28 Жыл бұрын
This makes perfect sense. Wow. Never thought of it that way
@bradleycoates6297 Жыл бұрын
A feeling of love remains despite the loss of memory. Even if you lose the memory of the one you love, a vague feeling of love remains in spite of it. Jealous, Rem's and Misa's story was all about love. "You're feelings for Light are strong enough that even without your memories, your feelings of love will remain", is what's being said.
@diddymelone2265 Жыл бұрын
Sadly this is yet another translation liberty issue, Rem actually said "I will give the note to the human you love, light yagami". Giving Up ownership only makes you forget about the deathnote and everything regarding it. Light also did not forget about the existance of kira or that He voluntarily got imprisoned, but he did forget about the Notebook and Ryuk and all that. Thats why analyzing the dub is kinda lackluster.
@alejandromagnobarrasa9244 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it’s involuntary based on what you wrote the exact quote, and I think it’s automatic as it’s part of the rules on the cover. He has to cover it up later to not be found out. Just because he says he will only wipe certain memories doesn’t mean that He has a choice to do it. He could be bound to do it by the book but because books don’t and can’t do anything He’s the one filling out that function. This happens all the time in fact. Telling someone your knee will jerk when you hit it with a hammer Is not telling them your doing it by choice but an understanding of your own self and your reflexes.
@lovelypanda86762 жыл бұрын
My theory: when you lose the ownership of the Death Note, only your memories of "being Kira" are erased, but everything else about your life while you owned the Death Note remains. As for Misa, while her love for Light was significant enough for her to remember it, it was unrelated to him being Kira. That's why she sought him out at first, but she fell for him as Yagami Light, and loved (or more like obsessed over him) regardless of whether he was Kira or not. So when she was arrested, Mogi's claims that she was being detained for being the 2nd Kira were something she connected to "being Kira" which is why she forgot it. However, from Light's perspective, him being part of the task force to catch Kira was also a significant enough part of his life for him to remember, and since "detaining Yagami Light as a possible suspect" is something important to both him as Kira, and as someone who is trying to catch Kira, he connected it to both, and that's why he remembers. I mean the persona he was showing to the outside world was literally "the police chief's son who is aspiring to become a detective and is also interested in the Kira case"

I was going to say exactly this, but in a different perspective. Forgetting everything about the Death Note includes anything that you relate to it. When Misa was detained it was "For being the 2nd Kira" and in her mind it was something like "Because of the DN I got detained". But when Light was detained, it was because he proposed that he could possibly be Kira, and that will help L to low his suspicions of him, so that's not related to the DN, but to the investigation.
@NoNo-bg8oc2 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that the difference was that Misa has never met L. As far as shes concerned she's a celebrity and she's tied up and somebody is doing weird stuff to her, so she assumes it was a stalker who caught her because she doesnt know what a Death Note or L is. Light however is on the task force, so he would have to lose a lot more memories than just the death note to forget who L is or why hes in confinement.

For the "Memory-wiped Misa thinking the Task Force were a stalker" thing: Misa could probably remember the interrogation, but from HER point of view, it makes zero sense because she lost all memories of being the second Kira. Misa doesn't remember why any of the things she did would make her look suspicious, so she would instead think that the 'stalker' was the one lying to her, telling her she's a suspect when in reality they just wanted to do sick stuff to her because of her status as an idol. On a second note, I wonder what would have happened if Light just 'gave' the Death Note to Yotsuba without waiting a week. His plan of actually becoming innocent by erasing his own memories is brilliant, but if anyone in the Task Force had a brain, weeks going by without any criminals dying as he laid in prison would be something nagging in the back of their heads years down the line if Kira was not caught. And happy delayed birthday!
@damonedrington345311 ай бұрын
Yea it never made sense why light seemed to purposefully make himself look suspicious there. I feel it would have been smarter to wait until REM has gotten the notebook to someone who started killing, and THEN relinquished ownership. @owlflame Жыл бұрын
My head canon is, for misa, everything that happened when she got the death note can be seen as one general blur. As she’s been impulsive she’s pretty much tied her new identity to the death note. Removing death note memories from her is as easy as just wiping the last month of her life. For light, he’s had this thing for almost a year and he’s still lived a full life and gotten to know a ton of people. All those extra events and connections aren’t technically a part of the death note. Just the “Kira case” which wasn’t taken from Light. As such they weren’t scrubbed. Just anything related to Light using the death note itself. Which, for light, is more easily filed away.

Misa didn’t have complete amnesia, she lost the same amount of memory as light, the reason light remembers “more” is because he was already part of the task force just like he continued being part of the task force with no death note, he was only able to tap into the memories while not handing or using the notebook, misa and lights interactions have all been about the death note that’s why their relationship made no sense once they were released and even L commented on how they met didn’t make much sense unless they were both Kira which they both deny because they have no memory

misa does eventually regain her memories of being arrested when she recognizes Soichiro Yagamis voice announcing her arrest. However she then says “There’s no way the police would tie me up all fetishy like that”. That intro almost killed me XD Next to L, Matsuda is my second favorite character. He brings a nice balance to L's logical side and also brings some comic relief to the very tense plot of the series. That's why it's so painful to me when the ending happens. On a more personal note, I actually had developed dissociative amnesia due to traumatic events, and was diagnosed with PTSD when I was 18. As such, your third theory regarding Misa's memory loss is not only very accurate, but indeed the most likely.
@jakeholder78852 жыл бұрын
My thought was that their memories would be replaced by the most likly thing to happen... Misa remembers meeting Light and falling in love, then she gets taken away/ kidnapped and her brain comes up with the idea of stalker. To be honest it kinda makes sense. Light is an important part of the investigation, he wouldn't forget that. Misa on the other hand just got yelled at by a dude, and then tortured and interrogated by another, older guy. She remembers no encounters with the task force. Just imagine, your a model, who was already once held at gunpoint by some stalker, and waking up in a cell, completely immobilized and the only thing you can remember about why you're there is a bunch of dudes trying to get you to admit you're the zodiac killer. What would your reaction even be? It makes sense Misa just assumes it's a stalker that she's talking to, because like... how the hell do you even explain that to yourself in this situation?

I think the way the Death Note works when you lose your memories of it is that the magic (Or whatever) erases/suppresses the memories and then fills in the gaps with something reasonable-ish. Misa filled in her mental gaps with what seemed plausible for her situation (I'm a celebrity, surely that's why I was abducted!) and Light fills in the gap with the knowledge that L was investigating him for being Kira and was on the Task Force L formed. Regardless *this* is what shows Light as a true genius; he made a plan and set it up to carry on even when he takes himself off the board (So to speak) while driving L up the wall, clearing his name and setting the events needed to reclaim the book into motion. Sure *something* can go wrong during all this, it always can, but the fact he made such a plan showcases what Light is capable of.

My theory was always that you lose anything connected to the deathnote in detail but you keep memory of your own actions even if they are death note related, they just get modified to not include it, its all about agency, Light chose to go into the cell in the same way Misa chose to find light and become his girlfriend, those choices can't be erased by the memory lose only modified. In the reverse sense Misa lost her memories of the arrest because it was forced upon her.
@cookiemons9097 Жыл бұрын
I think the reason Misa doesn't know her reason for being arrested, but Light does is because Light has a lot more memory of L that doesn't necessarily pertain to his knowledge of being Kira. And my guess for why he remembered his memory of being willfully detained, maybe he remembers that he willfully detained himself but doesn't remember the underlying intent; he doesn't remember he had alterior motives because that connects to his understanding of himself being Kira. That even explains why he said, "at first I thought this was a good idea, but now i'm realizing this is crazy" He had memory of his action, just no recollection of his intent. Neither did Misa have any memory of why she would be a suspect at all to any police when being detained. Misa had never met L and if all her memories of being Kira are erased, she's have no idea why someone like L would want to kidnap her outside of her being a model. I'm probably wrong on this, but to me, memory is a malleable and vague enough term to make something like this make sense. It probably doesn't but it's fun to see if you can. Maybe the author had a different interpretation of what it means to remember something, idk.

I was trying to figure out “Why the killings stopped when Light was detained?” Because a few episodes ago, Light and Ryun had an argument where Light explained that he has names written weeks in advance just in case he’s hospitalized. So why weren’t criminals dying after he was detained? He didn’t have enough time to run out of his backlog, since he was weeks ahead and Misa was detained only a few days before him. He couldn’t change the death dates to sooner or later either because once you write a name in the notebook, you can only change the conditions and time of death in the next 6mins 40 secs. So here’s my theory, It’s not that criminals weren’t still dying. The ones he wrote would still be dying, but you wouldn’t notice because they may be lesser known criminals or criminals from different areas. Rather, new criminals weren’t dying after being broadcasted on the news. Normally, Light would kill those criminals but since he was in jail he couldn’t. Which makes Light look highly suspicious. (Which was his goal of course.)

The way I see it, Misa didn't forget all that much. The main thing she forgot was the reason she was arrested, which causes her to fill in the blanks with assumptions. I think the reason she forgets this is because she wouldn't be able to understand her reaction to getting arrested without knowing about the death note, so she has to forget that part since it is connected to the death note. As for Light, he can understand his choice to volunteer to be confined without the context of death note memories. They're instead connected to his actions on the task force, and L's suspicion that he's Kira. Misa doesn't have any knowledge of the task force since all that knowledge was intimately connected with her memories of the death note. That's the difference here.

Happy birthday! I never really thought about the disparities in their respective Death Note amnesias, I really like your theories and will be accepting the latter into my personal head canon. I do wonder if it has to do with a persons own psychology, Light sees himself as an avatar of justice so without the Death Note memories he instead sees himself as someone fighting Kira and thus recalls everything centred around that, whereas Misa seems to define herself more as Light's girlfriend primarially with her identity as another Kira spinning off from that as the primary goal, so the memories she formed prioritised Light but pretty much anything to do with being Kira, including why she was being arrested, are erased entirely.

Either that or she thought her stalker had a weird kink for calling her the second Kira haha. It could also be that in her torture it was never brought up about her being Kira while it was going on.

I feel like there's still something else that should've been commented. I always wondered how Light was able to bury the Death Note when he was being followed by Mogi apperantly. But Aizawa explains in this episode how they weren't able to follow Light always due to being short in personal, which is brilliant! It gets to show that killing those FBI agents, and thus get almost the entire japanese task force quit the Kira case had a positive consequence for Light. That him revealing his connection to the police wasn't pointless as its really paying off here. There wouldn't have been any way for Light to bury the Death Note if the task force had so many investigators like at the very beggining of the series, following him.

First of all the Task Force can't be big, that would just lead to other information leaks. Secondly, it is odd but why they didn't ask police for help? After episode with storm of TV studio there are clearly more brave enough men to stand against Kira. It's kinda funny how with progress of the series resentment against Kira (in society) falls down. Usually society would split, but in Death Note it s just group of detectives against leader of the cult if not God...

So it could be that her amnesia is so severe that she quickly forgets what she sees because how her sight is now permanently involves the death note.

I thought episode 19 debunked my theory, but it just adds more meaning to the scene. I said that he would’ve remembered that he suspected he might be Kira before getting locked up, but then he brings up the same comparisons in 19. However he forgot that he was lying before, so this is him basically thinking what he pretended to think here. I enjoy theorizing, so thanks for pointing out this potential inconsistency bro

Okay first of all, great video. This episode is in my opinion kind of a breaking point. I agree that Light increased Ryusakis cerditability first and then used that to be totally cleared of suspicion after being let go. My problem is that Light with his time in jail (solitary confinement) cannot ever be declared innocent. The fact that all murders stop after being locked away is undeniable proof that he was Kira at that point in time. Ryusakis acknowledges this later and basically lets them go because there was no point in detaining them since they lost their memories of being Kira. But from that point on, all task force members should look at it the same way Ryusaki does "Light, 100% is proven to have been Kira" and since they don't know what happened to light and Misa (even after getting the death note from Higuchi, the instruction don't say anything about the rules of ownership) they should work under the assumption that Light and Misa (Now both proven to be Kira) can get their power back. It is also kind of confusing to see nobody on the task force mentening that Light should be locked away for life because in his time as Kira he killed (I don't know the exact amount) hundreds or thousands of people. Same thing for Misa, where the task force even has physical evidence linking her to her crimes. She committed (I don't know how many) murders and they let them walk free because there is a third Kira. Like after the murders stopped, I would put Light and Misa in jail/prison. For Ryusakis, at this point in time, it would be a far more logical conclusion to think that Light shared his powers somehow. He mentioned this in Misas answer to the police and since they can't prove it wrong and both the first Kira (Light) as well as the second Kira (Misa) appeared out of nowhere, I'd think it is a kind of power that you can give to/ share with other people. Regardless. Light in this episode is proven to have been Kira. This is an undeniable fact. The existence of a third Kira doesn't change the hundreds of murders he committed and he should have been locked away for this. (I know Ryusaki is a kind of morally gray character because his priority is to solve the case, which means finding the method how Kira killed all those people and Light is his way to accieve this, but I think it's ethicly wrong to just gloss over the fact he defenetly was Kira and the task force is kind of dumb for not getting this clear proof. Maybe you can say something about this move from Light which I consider to be his biggest mistake (it really is a kind of admission of guilt if you think about it) But that's just my opinion, I might very well have overlooked something, but I think it's a topic that needs some attention.

memory lost could be based on how the deathnote owners remember things, or more like, associate things. it may be that misa would associate the death note when she was detained to the actual capture like "i wont tell the people wanting to find something leading the deathnote about the deathnote" to "i didnt want to tell the people" , and light just simply decided to ask to be detained and remembered it as "im kira, imma be detained" or smth, where the death note wipe would then lead the memory to becoming "im thought im kira, i got detained but idefk what's going on" but then again it may just be headcannon shenanigans

It's possible that Light's lack of memory loss is because he was much more involved in the Kira investigation than Misa was. All of her memories as he Second Kira directly involved her using the Death Note. Light, on the other hand, was heavily involved in the Kira investigation outside of his use of the Death note and his Kira persona. I believe that this difference is because of that.

Fun fact: Matsuda reacts to L saying his name after getting slapped by repeating it, because in the manga, L drops the suffix to his name (L always uses the formal suffixes to address everyone in the manga) So instead of calling him “Matsuda-San” like he normally would, L just called him “Matsuda”

I like the fact that the comments, not the video creator, were able to catch the key information in the show that explains exactly why the memory wipe scene was actually fully within logic. Goes to show when you try overanalyzing, you ignore/miss important information because you are already conditioning your response.

18:39 just thoughts on how this may have happened. Light remembers everything about the investigation and his detainment because he was suspected and volunteered to be detained to remove suspicion because they make sense for him to do it. He doesn’t remember the real reasons because those relate to the death note. Misa forgot choosing to endure being arrested and tortured to not cause Light problems, because she did it for Kira. She remembers her relationship because she legitimately loves Light. Rem said she’d still have her feelings. She forgot wanting to die/bite her tongue because it was for Kira.
@XDeadxSpawnx Жыл бұрын
Basically Light has been 2 people, the teen Light and killer Kira. Kira was erased, so the real reason he did stuff is forgotten because he did them for Kira. He remembers doing it because he came up with a reason Light would do it

I personally think Misa remembered being interrogated + taken in for being Kira, but once her memories were removed about the note book, the prospect of being taken in for being Kira was so ridiculous that she assumed that it was actually stalkers using that as an excuse.
@beauricker2772 жыл бұрын
It could be that Light had a way do disassociate some of his knowledge about Kira from his knowledge about the Death Note. As in, Misa doesn’t know anything about the Kira investigation bc she associates any information regarding the Death Note with any non-public knowledge of Kira, but still loves Light & Kira (definitely not Light) bc that was based off of emotion rather than knowledge. Whereas Light kept some knowledge because, while he was detained, he disassociate his knowledge of the Death Note from his knowledge of L, the Kira investigation, & other incriminating information.
@MasterKnightDH2 ай бұрын
In the manga, Good Light remembered meeting Naomi Misora and knowing her real name, just not the important details about DNing her for knowing too much. He didn't talk out loud about it, of course, finding it irrelevant or some such. So not all incriminating info was removed from Light's memory.
@Slaytrixi Жыл бұрын
I think the difference between Light and Misa's memory is the fact that Light had more knowledge of L and the task force outside of being Kira. Misa does not know who L is, and does not know him. Light also went out of the way to turn himself in, going out of his way to do so and talking directly to L to do this.

@quinnmaher4727 Жыл бұрын
I believe the reason they forget different amounts of memories is only because of the difference in their lives VS the use of their death notes. Light Yagami without the death note is a just son of a chief detective on the police force. He’s been involved with the investigation and uses theories to try to almost push different ideas to L and he has learned the case thoroughly. Then the model and actress Misa Amane. This showing that the only involvement in all of this including the police, any involvement of kira, including rem giving her memory of being in love with Light. Her mind filled the gaps of where she was and what was happening. She continued being a model and celebrity and suddenly got taken by someone, taken and tortured. (How Misa Amane felt it). The only explanation because of this would be to assume she was kidnapped by a crazed stalker. While when Light loses memory of the Death Note, the gaps are filled as if he was actively TRYING to catch kira, and came up with all the ideas of being imprisoned and not let out within any reason. It shows that Light Yagami’s unaltered mind would have gone through and lived within the world Kira created. This made it more clear after he became Light Yagami again, continuing the investigation with a just mindset of ideals AGAINST KIRA. Showing that the mind filled the gaps within reason of what would have been the case if they ended up in the same situations, without either of them having ever used the death note.

@theskull10302 жыл бұрын
It might make sense that, since traumatic memories are very prompt to being suppressed just by natural means, the supernatural intervention messing with her brain to erase some memories was more than enormous to trigger the additional loss of the events she experienced with Watari.

Okay, here's my attempt at an explanation: Misa doesn't really have a reason to believe them. Imagine if someone blindfolds you, gags you, accuses you of being a serial killer and then straps you to a table in the world's most metal straightjacket. Misa got shown no authentication, she has absolutely no reason to believe these guys are actually cops. And especially given how they treated and tortured her, and her idol status, she determined this guy can't be a member of the police and is just some crazy stalker instead.
