General Iroh sounding the same as Zuko is weirdly immersion-breaking for me. I get what they were going for, but it just draws attention to the fact that these are fictional characters being portrayed by voice actors. They could have at least had Dante Basco change his voice up a bit. It’s especially strange since Zuko shows up later in the series and sounds nothing like his young self. Did General Iroh steal his voice? Is he Koh’s cousin or something?
@Andrew-Collet

After listening to hours and hours of the Braving the Elements podcast, I'm pretty convinced Dante Basco can't change up his voice all that much. It always sounds the same pretty much no matter what he's doing. But it works.

It actually makes some sense, a child's voice could take after their father, while as the father ages 60 years or so, it's likely their voice will change a significant amount. That being said, I do understand the feeling

Agreed. I actually wound up disliking General Iroh when I watched Korra mostly because I never really saw him but a MUCH less interesting version of Zuko. Nothing against the character, and I get what they were going for, but just the name "Iroh" would have been enough of a reference. Having Dante Basco voice a one off character would have been fine but not one with a decent amount of lines.

Ok I do have to defend the ships being out at sea thing. That’s a common practice, the US Navy has a ton out at sea at all times, so if something goes down pretty much anywhere there’s a ship in the area that can be quickly deployed to deal with the situation. The reason they are at sea is to quickly respond if something happens in the nearby area, that’s why Iroh is out at sea in the show.

Also they already got a wire from Tenzin right? Tenzin asked to said a wire to General Iroh earlier in the episode, so they probably got that wire, were on a alert and then got the wire from Korra giving the update, while they were underway and replied giving an ETA? Seems normal enough to me

The US Navy is a big outlier when it comes to naval power. That said I think Republic City is near the Fire Nation so they could just be patroling Fire Nation waters. More likely he already knew because... he already knew. He literally said he was going to take back Republic City, so he must have already received word that Republic City was under attack. They were probably already on their way.

imo it isn't even that complicated, this is hours or maybe longer after Tenzin send his message, thus they already left their base at that point. It would have been interesting though to see them leave the base as they receive Korra's message.

@@nahometesfay1112 The US Navy IS an outlier when it comes to naval power, but remember in ATLA, so were the Fire Nation, to a significantly larger extreme than even the US Navy in our world. The emptiness of Republic City has always been a sticking point for me. With them spending basically the whole season here, you'd think they'd take the time to make sure it feels really fleshed out and lived in, right? And yet, this supposedly major metropolitan city based off of 1920s New York feels emptier than any of the random towns the gang went to in AtLA. They'd always take the time to have things going on in the background, with random people just hanging out and going about their day. Even if they were sometimes just still, crudely drawn images in the far distance it made the world feel real. Republic City is like an empty Gmod map in comparison, it's a ghost town until people are magically spawned in to be part of the plot.

I'd like to chalk it up to them being Airbenders. There's a lot of fanon about how air is the most OP element and Airbenders could really wreck shit if they weren't all pacifists. I mean, look at how many comet supercharged firebenders Gyatso managed to take out before going down. Plus there is also the fact that for nearly the past 200 years you could count the number of airbenders with one hand. Few people have even met one, even fewer have fought one, so the Equalists aren't going to be as familiar with their tactics as they are with the other elements

Ok Korra making the air bubble around Naga has two problems. First, an air bubble that size would be extremely buoyant, presumably Korra is holding them down and holding its position relative to Naga. I’m ok with that part. The way more egregious part is that she makes the air bubble after they’re completely submerged! They didn’t bring any air with them and Korra can’t yet airbend! They should all be suffocating!

The main problem with this love triangle is that it happened too soon in the series. I know that season 1 was originally written as a mini series, and they didn’t think they’d get more seasons, but as a result, we don’t have enough time to really care or get to know these characters before this drama is threatening to tear up their friendship apart. Imagine if they waited until season 2 before having the characters show romantic interest in each other. Then not only would be more invested in how their friendship is being tested, but characters like Asami and Mano would be allowed to develop distinctive characteristics beyond the obvious romantic archetypes they were written as. This would also allow any romance to bloom naturally as they gradually get to know each other and grow closer.

I don’t think it matters if they knew or not, considering how well the creators thought ATLA through, you’d think they’d stick more to their strengths. This isn’t to say that Korra should be like ATLA or better, but it would’ve been nice if the romance was minimal and not a focus. The only true strength of season 1 are Tenzin, Lin and Amon tbh.

I never really did notice how often the main cast lose fights. People have said they did but it never really felt like they were constantly losing either. That's probably because there are no consequences to those loses for the most part. Also yeah, this whole semi war thing didn't feel grand enough in scale. He's an airbender, and a master at that, it makes sense he'd have control over the air directly around him and be able to pick up on even small changes, displayed in his hair standed up, especially when he's on high alert for attack. Like spidey-sense for airbenders lol

The suspension of disbelief that I always gave myself is that nobody knows how to fight Airbenders. The other three are ubiquitous and everybody gets to interact with them all the time. It at least makes sense. I'd imagine each bending discipline had a way to counter airbending that was lost due to the genocide and would've easily been forgotten about. Even with Aang reappearing, him using every element makes it difficult to study airbending combat because he could easily switch to a different element on a moment's notice, and for all we know, Tenzin hasn't had any need to be a fighter in his life until the events of LoK. It's honestly a pretty reasonable suspension of disbelief, even for ATLA

At the moment I thought it was kinda cool. Like he didn't want to turn the Avatar into some martyr for benders and it's almost like an insult to Korra, that she means no threat to him and isn't scared of her, in contrast to previous shots of her where it shows she is scared of Amon and losing her bending. Of course this gets thrown away and makes no sense afterwards but I liked it while it lasted

3:36 They could've used an explanation a little sooner, but it's established in Book 3 that airbenders shave their heads so they can feel the changes in the winds around them. We even see a novice airbender even dodging a quick attack from behind him because of this sensation. I imagine this is how Tenzin knew, but they animate his beard tingling since animating the skin may just look wrong.

13:10 Ok, I'm a physicist and a fan of the show. You are absolutely right that this moment doesn't make sense physically, even if you ignore the magic of waterbending. Unless Naga's legs were as dense as air and still strong enough to carry the weight of all her body plus the four humans. It's also just a tiny tiny tiny droplet on the ocean of moments that don't make sense physically that is the full collection of bending and non-bending feats of these two series. At this point, I'm just saying "whatever" and enjoying it.

11:42 I've just realized that Korra feels like a weaker show bc she knows already how to bend every element. I mean, when Aang had to learn every element he was also learning the philosophy behind those elements. Like patience for earthbending or creativity when it comes to be an airbender. But since Korra knows almost all the elments, she and therefore the show skips on this learning. So Korra feels emtpy as a character, and thus the show. Tenzin should be teaching Korra about being creative in solving problems "finding the other angle", but since he is forced to be a foil to the lack of spiritual angle from Korra, he is forced in to being so boring and harsh instead of what we would imagine should be a funny and creative powerful monk.

at 13:00, the bubble can stay afloat per the principles of buoyancy. Since the net density of everything within the bubble likely is less than the density of water, than archimedes’ principle states that the bubble and everything within it can theoretically float. that being said, they don’t really float or sink so i’m not entirely sure what’s going on there.

The reason amon was willing to capture korra and taker bending in the last episode compared to the episode where he had her dead to right, is that in this episode he is ready to strike the city, meaning his plan is finally at its last phase. After he attacks the city the nations will be as mad as if he would capture korra, it makes a lot of snese that whenever he is ready to strike he is also ready to take korra's bending. If you ask me the reason his plan is only now at its last phase is probably 1 of 2 things, either he was waiting for the mecha tanks to be finished or he was waiting for thr council to antagonise the none benders, allowing to bring more to his cause. Possibly both can be correct.

12:47 for all floating things there's a simple rule: the weight devided by displacement (volume that could have been water if the vessel wasn't there) has the same density as the water (or other medium). This means that all the air that Korra keeps in, also counts as displacement, and so helps for boyancy. So what you see is kinda realistic. Hope this helps

13:08 Naga is a huge animal who probably has the capacity to hold enough air that it can swim expertly. Aided by the additional trapped air, it can now support the extra weight of humans on top. 13:38 That's an airship. The only way it can fly is by having warmer/lighter air trapped inside to provide the necessary buoyant force to provide lift. By ripping the top surface, the air can now escape and basically take away the lift generating mechanism. The explosions are probably due to the burners maintaining hot air getting damaged.

15:00 this does get into an interesting world building topic actually. One of the reasons the Titanic disaster was so devastating was because at the time, it was believed that there were so many ships out and ships took so long to sink that a nearby one would be able to come to the rescue if need be. As such, why "there weren't enough life boats" on the Titanic, since Life boats were seen as a ferry vessel to get to the rescue ship, not as a means to evacuate everyone from a sinking ship. That was changed after the Titanic disaster as well as other changes to search and rescue proceedure to prevent that sort of thing from happening. We never see much naval presence outside of the Fire nation in Air Bender, so General Iroh happening to be out like that could imply that a Titanic like disaster occurred in universe and this sort of protocol thing happened in this universe as well.

@PM-James
@PM-James Жыл бұрын
12:55 to answer this, the center of mass on four legged animal is usually roughly where the end of their lungs are, which essentially are sacks of air in of themselves. So Naga should sink to roughly that point before her buoyancy allows her to float. So yeah, for the water line to be that low, they're essentially flying somehow there. As for whether it provide air, likely yes but only briefly. Water is soluble and always contains atmospheric elements in it. They make the bubble after being submerged, meaning all she should be doing is forcing the water away from them, leaving behind whatever atmospheric elements the water carried in it naturally. We can assume 02 is present in that area (that's what a fish breathes when they filter the water into their gills, not the oxygen in H20 like a lot of people think) so it should provide some air to them but you breathe out C02 and there are 5 of them all doing that. Any O2 available would be replaced with CO2 extremely quickly. The result would be thin to no air really fast and 'cause oxygen deprivation. Short term would result in them becoming delirious and long term exposure would 'cause tissue damage and eventually death. I'd say they got about 1 minute or less before that stuff starts to happen.
