The reason Schniezel had no disorientation may be because there was no noticable change in his perspective before and after. From Villeta's perspective she was in a mech, then 1 blink later she is standing in a warehouse with her mech gone. From Clovis's perspective he's sitting on hos throne and he has Lelouch with a gun in his face questioning him, and 1 blink later he hasn't moved and he still has Lelouch with a gun in his face

@@AlsandoGames I forgot that detail since there's an entire subplot about this one instance causing amnesia starting before she left the mech (and I forgot that Geass doesn't work through the mech camera) but this doesn't change much from my point. So she gets geassed to give him the mech, which will necessarily include letting him drive outside of vision/hearing distance, as well as forgetting anything relevant to him hijacking the mech. That includes the failed attempt at geass before she left the mech, bit for some reason not her first spotting a high schooler, probably because she thinks this is a high schooler and not a hijacker. So from her line of consciousness as a result of this geass, she is in her mech looking at a high schooler surrounded by corpses, and one blink later she is standing around with both the teen and her mech long gone

The inconsistencies with Lelouch's geass power may be explained by the nature of the commands that was given to people. In long term commands like "answer my questions" it is not needed constant eye contact. But with weave commands like "tell me who killed my mother" or "give me your Knightmare" it is a different story.

I'd also say that probably blinking isnt actual turn off button for Geass, Lelouch does it mostly because of theatrics, but it gets turned off when he actually wants to, he is kinda into that, like when acting as Zero he seems to enjoy theatrics. And I know it's kinda anime logic, where they can talk for 30 minutes but in story it takes only 3 minutes, but still I wonder how long Lelouch would be able to not blink in some scenes.

Also the fact that she was under for so long may be because he didn't actually release her from the geass, so it just kind of lasted until some kind of invisible time limit was reached and she naturally fell out of it. While with clovis he actually intentionally released him.

50:20 You ask me, Lelouch was only pretending to leave the room, knowing Kallen would try to stop him. If Lelouch were in Kallen's shoes, he'd do the same, seeing as the bathroom would be the perfect opportunity to get answers without worrying about pesky interruptions. And pretending to leave the room would be a perfect way to bait Kallen into that conversation. All he'd have to do afterwards would be to play it off, wait for the call to come through, and deal the conversational kill.

I think you're 100% right on this. I think I just got hyper focused on the fact that it *did* play out the way that it did, which seemed super convenient for him. But, had it not gone that way, I'm sure he could have found some sort of excuse for coming back. Something simple like, "Oh, crap, I think I left my wallet in that jacket," or something.

Clovis became the viceroy of Japan with the intention of finding Lelouch and Nunnally or at the very least finding their remains so he could give them a proper burial and give his family (the ones who loved Lelouch and Nunnally like him) closure. It's crazy how code geass portrays people realistically even monsters like Clovis who committed horrible atrocities has humanity to his character it's truly amazing one of the many things I love about this series.

Lelouch did have good reason to kill Clovis. He had revealed himself, which alone would have prevented Zero and the Black Knights from operating. But despite being selfish and sometimes nihilistic, Lelouch does have a fairly consistent sense of justice. It might not even be in his top 5 priorities, but he does believe the way the Japanese are treated is wrong. There are multiple times in the series where he, as Lelouch Lamperouge, goes out of his way to help Japanese people being casually abused. He would most certainly believe Clovis deserves to die for what he did in Shinjuku.

As for the Geass inconsistencies when it stops its effect. I always thought that the lenght of the effect is influenced by the command. So when Lelouch asks a single question it stops once it is anwsered. The reason why Viletta remained in the trance longer, is because Lelouchs command was "Give me your Knightmare", which implies that he wants to keep it. So a geassed person sort of subconsciously makes sure, that the trance is long enough to follow the command to the best of their abilities.

I feel like the one thing that kinda saves the whole bathroom scene is that later on Lelouch mentions to Kalen that the line was public, probably as part of the whole Ashford academy complex, and Zero's whole MO is using either public/obfuscated lines or phones he himself planted up until they form the Black Knights, so getting the number wouldn't be too hard. The timing however... lol. Also, he probably gave Sayoko a conditional order (like he did with Guilford in season 2) so if he didn't call her up until a certain time, she should proceed as told. Also, geass is pretty consistent, and it's duration and side effects are probably affected by the initial command and the amount of time they are under the influence until the command is carried out. Which kinda makes Clovis' death even funnier, because Lelouch opened with a question, so even if he knew something more, he couldn't answer because that wasn't a part of the initial command lmao
@iamthehobo

This guy is right about the geass effect being based on the command, the eye contact only initiates it. The difference is between asking a specific question and saying I want answers, you can see this especially near the end of the show where he just drops all pretenses and tells people to serve him indefinitely. The difference in recovery times I've got no explanation for though

On the topic of the geass acting differently each time I think it has to do with the commands issued. First of all Villetta the command was to hand over control of the knightmare and I imagine that the trance might have been a part of that command, after all if she had just handed him the key then snapped out of the trance she would have technically fulfilled her command but obviously directly after acted against it by trying to take back control and the people under geass always try to accomplish a command to the best of their ability so I imagine she waited for him to leave before the geass effect ended. Then the Prince the actual commands come in the form of continuous questions he didn't make a statement to answer his questions or anything at least not with geass he just kept asking questions with geass active so I'm guessing that once he blinks the effect is over and he can't ask anymore questions as the effect has already run its course. Finally with Kallen he makes a statement to answer his questions which is his actual command and then starts asking. While the command period of the geass is over when he blinks she still is under the command to answer his questions which she does until the questioning is over at which point the geass looses its effect.

That’s actually a really good explanation for the differences in response from everyone. Thank-you for taking the time to break it down. What do you think about the first instance, though? A good question and honestly that definitely was done for theatrics but yeah I guess that's the best explanation for those. Can't really think of a better explanation than loyalty to the empire and royal family so the Geass may have just suppressed their survival instincts without touching their loyalty resulting in an exaggerated reaction

@@overanalyzinganime That first one is very interesting. The best explanation I can think of is that Leoluch's mood somehow influenced the order. He emerged from CC's visions feeling dramatic and almost high, goes on a speech taunting the guards, then gives the order using his real name. Once he sees blood, we see Leoluch almost sober up when he realizes what's up. So the visions messed him up a bit. Either that, or the surge of power from the new geass. Still that feels like a stretch. I'm sure the real reason is that his was Episode 1 and they wanted a more shocking ending. It's also a good show of how overlwhelming a Geass order is, since they didn't even hesitate.

@@overanalyzinganime It is incredible how they find room to make everyone feel human in such a crowded cast with only 20 minutes per episode. Say what you want about Nina and Table-kun, that scene makes her character hella memorable. I don't think anyone saw her later in Season 1 and thought "wait, who's this chick again?" Another little touch like that I like is the rivalry between Lloyd and Rakshata. It really gives a sense that this world exists outside of what's on screen, which is something a lot of speculative fiction struggles to achieve.

So I know that we see him blink and cancel it. But I think, with enough context clues, we can piece together that the power just ends when the command is over. In this moment, he's commanded Kallin to answer his questions. And she's fulfilled that when he turns around to leave. She interprets that as having fulfilled the command. Where as, with Clovis (possibly because they know each other,) the blink and shift in his face might have just been all that Clovis needed to know that he'd fulfilled the command. We see plenty of times in the series that the command is king. Not the command giver. I believe it's just a matter of how the geassed individual interprets when they have or haven't fullfilled the command.

@Yodah97
@Yodah97 2 ай бұрын
@@overanalyzinganime I suppose that with no witnesses, she could threaten him, ditch the knife, and then anything Leoluch said would just be his word against hers. Hell with both of them in the bathroom, she could run out naked and claim he tried to assault her in the shower. That'd be enough to avoid immediate arrests at least. On the subject of Kallen trying to kill him, it only makes sense if you assume being a murderer is less bad than being a rebel. Which may actually track with the type of modern feudalism Britannia is running. If she's a murderer, she'll be wanted. If she's found as a rebel, Britannia will likely punish not only her, but her mother and potentially even her father too.

So glad to see this is getting continued! So one thing that I noticed you glossed over was when Rivalz is talking about Kallen, he doesn’t just talk about her being wealthy but also well bred. Which is creepy for him to say and I can see why you removed it, but in Britannia, that isn’t weird. With the focus on imperial bloodlines, pure bloods, and the Stadtfelds being an important family, Kallen being half Japanese and half Britannian (love the flag transition fading in by the way) is actually a very big deal that despite being brought up a lot, isn’t fully explored. You would think that the head of the Stadtfeld family having 2 half Japanese children would be a bigger scandal but we never even see Kallen’s father the whole series and it’s unclear how the family is affected after losing their oldest son, which sadly Kallen’s brother is another thing that is never really explored. While a lot of this is better served brought up in “Kallen’s episode” it’s crazy how much her being a half blood is mentioned, but not fully explored despite how much screen time Kallen gets.

With regards to them being "diplomatic tools", it is a gesture of good faith, but in the sense that they are providing leverage to Japan to engender trust. The thinking would be that giving over the royals prevents Britannia from doing anything shitty because they have essentially handed over the royals as hostages and thus would play nice to ensure their safety. This further compounds Lelouch's ill will towards the emperor because he put their lives on the line just to catch Japan by surprise (even though it seems unnecessary given the technological disparity), then left them to die; either by the hands of the Japanese government or the fighting during the invasion. Also, please keep doing this series, it's the best.

I feel like Lelouch assuming that Nunnally's blindness could eventually be cured could just be cause the world they live in already has very advanced medical technology and thus assumed that within Nunnally's lifetime someone would invent some sort of cure for blindness. Or, at least that's how I initially understood it. Also, in the first episode, the truck driver probably wasn't directly shot by the nightmare, it's more likely that a shard of glass from the window which was clearly broken right in front of him got lodged in his shoulder when the glass broke. Also also, I feel like Lelouch shouldn't've assumed that he can only use geass on a person once cause it would've been just as likely that it simply had a cooldown.

I don't think Kallen was just gonna straight stab him, even if he admitted to being the guy on the radio, why would she kill the one that saved her? More likely once she was sure he was the guy on the radio she would've used her superior strength to get him into a hold and press the blade to his neck and threaten answers out of him.

@overanalyzinganime Ive made my own videos talking about it just because of how much it actively offended me and felt like an insult to the original series. Comparing it in any way is completely unfavorable, even just the first episodes. But the whole franchise has been sort of off the rails for a while now without so much as a cohesive vision. There is literally a Geass Satan introduced in Akito that hasn't been mentioned since.

About the inconsistency in response 7:23, maybe the effect of the geass is also affected by the state of mind of the user when it takes hold. Maybe for those that are already calm it makes things foggier, but for someone in distress that response when freed may be dominant. Dude thought he was going to be harmed or die, to other feeling may have mattered once in control.

I think that when Lelouch started to leave, he expected Kallen to want to question him about Shinjuku. Like, he was banking on that. However, if she didn't do anything to keep him from leaving early, he could have went "Oh by the way, I didn't have time to tell you, but dont talk about Shinjuku. People will show you gruesome blah blah" yeah it could have been a bit out of nowhere, but if he adds on that he didnt want to say it out in public because, you know, its public and they're talking about Shinjuku which he was trying to tell her not to do, I think that he could have reasonably stalled until the phone call came in. The best case is that Kallen takes the initiative with questioning him, but the backup plan was that he just stalls with leaving until the phone rings. He might've had to leave in the middle of that call, or he could have tried to answer it because, well, who would have expected someone to specifically be calling for Kallen?

So at 22:00 you bring up somethign that I think was actually explained when he does his geass tests and learns his max range is nearly 900ft (two and a half football fields) and there's no way he can be heard that far away. This means his commands don't need to be verbalized for geass intent to work. The only time anyone reacts to a geass showing on a charecters face, and someone under Charles, Rollo, the puppeterring child, or Lelouch's geass eyes don't show red like they do for the viewer. If the point is just to inform the viewer this person has a geass and is using it any animation differences are animation errors rather than story errors. To directky answer the quesriin of why he wasn't canceling it when his eye went back to normal after using it; it already worked. Geass moves theough the optical nerve at the speed of light and takes imeditate effect. Fun side tangent whike I'm stoned and not sure if I'll even make sense with my long winded answer to a very brief question. This could also be seen as a way to show the viewer Leloush change physically as his views on geass change and he begins to fear it using it onky against other geass users and then hate it killing anyone who commit the crime of being given a contract in a life or death situation the same as him. It first grows when he thinks geass has allowed him to acheuve his goal even if he lost the game, and his eye gets fully overtaken and he has ti wear special contacts to not have his geass go out of control, and this makes hin afraid of it and afraidbof doing to anyone else what he did to Euphy. When next it uogrades is when he used it on god and all of humanity and had it succeed. After this he walks up to the throne sits down and claims victory using geass immedatly to enslave his people. We see what Lelouch could of done at the very start had he been willing to use geass at its full potential. Nothing he does except exist after charles death was impossible before either upgrade. He still could of used hisngeass on everyone with hiw same aknolwege me as king and take. Over

I feel like episode three is very important for the entire pace of the show. The first two episodes had been super high tension and stakes, so it is nice that episode three is more low key. It also sets up the rules of the geass way more and we se Lelouch use the it in more interesting ways. (even tho that bathroom scene was weird)

Bathroom scene: he could've simply planned to have some excuse to knock on the bathroom door during the call, like "Oh hey, I didn't forget to bring you [article of clothing], did I?" From there, he'd simply say clarify his Shinjuku statement at a different occasion, giving roughly the same effect as the bathroom scene given. I don't think his last comment in that scene as shown in the video (i.e. him saying he saw her naked but won't tell anyone) really gives off a "he's a really nice guy" vibe. It feels to me more like a flustered/awkward closing statement (like "hey, I can see you naked and I feel like I'm not supposed to, so could I leave cuz I'm feeling kinda uncomfortable") cuz if that's the bar for nice, what's the bar for normal? Tell someone? Oh yeah man, I was bringing this girl a change of clothes and happened to see her naked in the shower-- like... okay? Idk about other people, but I'd find that pretty darn weird to hear from a friend, lol. But tbf, I may be thinking this way cuz I'm a guy, perhaps if I were a girl, that might actually be my perception of what normal guys potentially talk about. Idk, I just find it weird to view that as "nice" when it just feels more like an awkward dude trying to say something polite to get out of social interaction, like replying to a waiter's "have a nice meal" with "you too", but that also could be me projecting, lol.
@voxsvoxs4261
@voxsvoxs4261 3 ай бұрын
I think I have some idea, saying 'I won't tell anyone else' would probably be comforting for a girl generally, since the feeling of it seems to be important to them, so stuff like external confirmations of what stuff like that is meant to 'mean' would probably ease their worries? It'd also just be an avoid drama move in general wouldn't it? 'I won't say anything, so don't say anything either.' Since Lelouch is still intent on school life at this point.

I mean logically it dose makes a lot of sense that his Geass isn’t consistent and works different on people. We talk about an psychic power that can influence people’s minds. But people’s minds don’t work and react the same way on things. You easily can argue that a person that is easy to manipulate can still be influenced some time even after the geass is turned off. Also someone that mentally weaker could end up confused a while after it got used on him. A prince that isn’t used to be order around and maybe even got training to not be easily manipulated can snap out off it faster. That the geass only works one time can be explained as well because the human body try’s to protect itself from harm and similar like a virus 🦠 could produce something that blocks it after encountering it.

As some others have pointed out, a lot of these seeming inconsistencies can be rationalized as "It lasts until the command is fufilled", and that he doesn't need to maintain Geass to keep the command active. Clovis was asked one specific question. He therefore snaps out once Lelouch has asked the question and his relevant follow-up question. Kallen was commanded to give answers, and while much later we will see that commands that vague often leave a recurring Geass, in this case it wore off as soon as the round of questioning was finished. This part is definitely a bit inconsistent, but I think the explanation we get about Geass growing stronger as it is used covers why this part changes later in the series. At the current time though, it wearing off slower than Clovis makes sense because it was more open-ended, and ended when he turned to leave, thus indicating an end to his questions. This interpretation is reinforced by the Teacher; He asked one very specific question, gets his answer, and the Geass ends. Unlike with Clovis, he made no move to ask a follow-up question. With Sayoko, we didn't see her specific command, so its hard to judge. But it probably ended when Lelouch went back to retrieve the recordings. With all of this in mind, the case of Viletta: it's one of the weirdest uses. You could consider fulfilling the Geass to include him driving off? But even then its not like she turns to watch him drive off with it. So did she just wait until she couldn't hear the Knightmare anymore? Much like a lot of early uses of abilities in anime, it could be worth chalking the Viletta and Royal Guards up to not having the power fully fleshed out yet. The uses we see in this episode generally line up far better with how the power is used going forward, which makes sense considering this episode is dedicated to figuring that out.
@overanalyzinganime
@overanalyzinganime 3 ай бұрын
The Sayoko one is actually really important to the context of this, too - because I didn’t even consider the fact that he had her Geass’d before he even walked in there. So, clearly his eyes glowing isn’t necessary at all. Plus there are other obvious instances in the future - like with the “Live” command that he gives to… well, I imagine you know who he gives that command to, so I’ll avoid spoiling it. Lol.
@researchinbreeder
@researchinbreeder 3 ай бұрын
@@overanalyzinganime Yeah, "Live" is one of the vague commands I had in mind when saying what I did in the Kallen section. Late R1 Lelouch giving that command with a more developed Geass probably would've actually instilled it like "Live".

Its not that lelouch cancelled it- Geass does not require maintained eye contact- only when being applied- and once the target fulfills all the conditions of the command given, it wears off. @overanalyzinganime Greetings from a somewhat recent viewer (stumbled across your channel about half a year ago). Regarding "I'm the worst when it comes to posting consistently" - everything depends on perspective. I know a certain KZbinr who planned on doing several videos about some of the most recognized games and game series but he disappeared for almost 4 years (and it's not like prior to his disapperance he was posting videos very regularly - months would go by, sometimes even a whole year). He recently resurfaced and without ANY adressing of his absence started the video with his usual "Hello there!", much like yours "Welcome back, everyone!". P. S. Considering the track record, it is safe to assume that episode 29 of Death Note will be posted in about a month after this video, and episode 4 of Code Geass in another month or month and a half after the Death Note 29. P. P. S. There was a thing that got quite irritating as the video went on - "Fucking Nina" "gag". I'm not certain that even those who hate her character with passion would repeat it quite as frequently; and since the "gag" wasn't funny for me from the start, it left a sour taste for this video. I hope it won't be a constant thing, otherwise my face WILL be hurt after many facepalms, not to mention the irritation coming from the repetition of an unfunny "gag".
@Вокинчеп
@Вокинчеп 3 ай бұрын
Well, many people have already written that Kallen was just going to use a knife as a means to incite fear and thus get some answers - any normal person would be nervous when somebody threatens you with knife (especially since you don't know for sure if the person with knife has enough restraint to not slice you if he hears something he doesn't like). So I will speak about "walking in on the bathroom scene" - it's very unlikely that anybody stepping into the bathroom would notice a knife. Their minds would probably be occupied with the assumption that Lelouch was attempting to peek and subsequently was caught red-handed. I can also imagine Lelouch being teased TO NO END by Milly and some other members of the council, but I also believe this incident would damage the reputation for Lelouch within the academy irrevocably. Which begs the question - had the aforementioned situation happened, would he attempt to make members of the student council forget this ever happened or he would try to find another solution? Or he would live with "Lelouch the pervert" reputation? To be honest, these questions are inconsequential to the overall story, but it would be quite hilarious to watch Lelouch thinking in the heat of a moment "Wouldn't it be easier to just erase that memory with Geass than attempt to explain I was NOT peeking at Kallen?".
@SebasTian58323
@SebasTian58323 3 ай бұрын
I don't know if it completely explains it, but I do think kallen was more concerned with keeping her secret than Lelouch being the person who saved them. I think, for that moment, she was thinking more on the line of just getting rid of a person who knows her secret than being grateful to the person who had saved them. Of course, the other issues still exist, but in regards to Lelouch leaving the room, I think he was hoping she would call him back because of everything else. I mean, he could have just said no and left instead of handing her the pink pouch-knife, but he chose to stay to hand it to her. I don't think he knew exactly what she'd say to keep him in the room, but with the way they were both getting ready to take care of each other before they were interrupted, and finally having a moment alone, it makes sense Lelouch could guess she'd want to ask questions.

I think the inconsistency of the geass power comes from the order itself or rather how the target interprets said order. simply put why'll Lelouch must remain in direct eye contact to give orders the geass will remain in effect intel the target believes that he/she has completed any and all tasks given in the allotted window. for example Valletta probably believes that her task was not complete intel her knightmere was out of earshot. In contrast Clovis's task was completed before Lelouch even broke eye contact. and now with Kallen Lelouch said he wanted answers so she would probably continue to answer any questions he asked intel she thought he was satisfied.
