Brian Fair: "When Overcast started [in Boston] in 1990, we were stealing ideas from Integrity and Starkweather. They were some of the first bands I heard who had amazing melodic singing and brutal screaming, and I loved Coalesce and Converge. It was an exciting time for music because that was before anyone was getting trapped into a formula." Mike D'Antonio: "The funny thing is, we didn’t have a musical direction at all when we were writing songs [for Overcast]. We were putting things together almost at random, so it took quite a few years to figure out where we wanted the band to go. We took on that evil Integrity attitude about hating the world and being down on your luck. Then bands started popping, like Starkweather in Philadelphia. They were huge for us. We looked up to the way they jumped from one type of a genre to another in an instant and gave the listener a bit of whiplash. Also, [Brooklyn’s] Candiria was a force to be reckoned with. They were throwing as many different styles of music into their songs as possible, and that’s something that Overcast got a little too caught up in-the breakneck swerves and turns that we tried to purposely put into our music so that the listener didn’t know what was coming next." Man anyone from back in the day? Some of those show lineups we had. Fortydaysrain, Fragment, Groundzero, Overcast, Shadows Fall, Converge, Cave In, Barrit, Gandiva, DeadEyesUnder. This show from 2014 has them sounding as they did in their prime. One of the best shows in my memory from this era was the massive bill in 1997 in Brockton. Overcast, Diecast, Punch The Klown, XXL, etc, etc.....PLUS Shai Hulud with the original singer. But man.... those dreadlocks down at his ass? I remember getting whipped in the face by them back when they were just below his shoulders :D

Any NE natives remember that show in 97 maybe 98 in Brockton with Diecast and Shai Hulud with their first singer? Also remember Overcast at several gnarly shows at St. Johns Gym in Clinton, E-Bar and The Space in Worchester, and even a few in Rochester, NH at the Safe and Sound.

First saw Overcast in maybe 95. In early Overcast demos, Brian wasn’t screaming yet, but when he started, it changed almost everyone’s approach to singing. He’s amazing and sounds better than ever.

pretty John or whatever your name is. Your ignorance becomes you, you post as if you think Overcast is a new band. This band ,oh this band was a part of a scene that people like you cannot comprehend. They have been around longer than your Turnstiles, Tui, and even Terror. They have infinitely influenced an army of bands that came after. Pop your bubble, expand your horizons

New kids have no clue about this stuff man. It's useless to even try and give them an explanation. Most, not all, are close minded when it comes to music these days.
@elduce71666 жыл бұрын
Do you honestly expect a Turnstile-TUI-Terror fan to even understand this band? I don't think they can understand what Overcast was ever. Overcast were spinning records, and terrorizing jockcore bands like those three you mentioned for years. Hatebreed stole riffs from this group and got big of aping Overcast's sound.

1994 saw the release of Overcast's first album, Expectational Dilution. Many folks point to that record as one the most important releases in the evolution of metalcore. What's your take on that? I am real proud that people look back at the music Overcast made and think it helped to shape some of the musical landscape in the heavy music world. We were definitely a band that was mixing metal and hardcore at a time when not a lot of bands were doing it, and at a time when some people were very opposed to the idea. For us, it was only natural. Our guitar player, Pete Cortese, was a total metalhead into thrash and death metal with little knowledge of hardcore at the time. Mike and I were total hardcore kids but also loved Slayer and Morbid Angel. All of those ideas and influences show up in that record. You can also hear the youthful energy and low budget that gives it a more "hardcore" feel.
