I love the obstructions tip. I am currently redoing a school project that had some pretty significant size constraints (the middle unit of a series of townhouses). Use these constraints to come up with different versions of this project. It’s the difference of being asked to draw a shape vs asked to draw a rectangle; it allows for more focus thought :)

Thanks for outlining the suggestions in the description. You are a true architect, a person who understands organization and going from macro to micro. I really like the last point: "Do the work." A few years ago I printed myself a nice simple graphic to put on my wall. It reads: ONLY DOING

Great tips! I like #8. Write. I actually started keeping a journal in the summer before my Thesis Year in school, and that habit even spilled over into studio. When I would get stuck, I would just start writing out what I was stuck on like I was explaining it to a friend stream-of-consciousness-style. It really helped me give order to the worries in my head. When I wrote down my options and concerns, it became much easier to see them objectively, (realize how silly they all sounded,) and make a decision. Which may be a little procedural than what you were describing, but it helped me tremendously! I think it is one of the most under-rated techniques for designing!

When you discuss the topic of inventing instructions and the movie the 5 obstructions I can completely agree, as a first year student we recently we're given a building to design an insertion into and to begin our design process we were given 3 different obstructions(1 a week) to create new and different ideas based around the obstructions we had chosen. It was an interesting way to design and think about the constraints of design outside of a typical design process,

nice methodology...love the insertion of different obstructions each week, it actually mirrors the way clients behave on a much smaller scale...!

Was searching up "The Five Obstructions", and the short film the documentary is based on is called the Perfect Human. Not "The Simple Human" as you mentioned in the video. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone else goes looking for it like I did :)
