30X40 Design Workshop Hey Eric, this is great, I think I will watch this again in the morning, given it's 1am I'm a bit sleepy to get the most out of this. The biggest difficulty in regards to time management I find is as I am still learning I don't yet know how long tasks are going to take particularly as I am needing to learn software from tutorials. A large chunk of time is taken up just searching for decent tutorials, so many videos listed as particular photoshop tutorials such as how create 3D isometric maps, are just a video of someone showing a task massively sped up without narration and with loud music. Not really suitable to learn from. I do find it interesting though how quickly you become used to the frantic pace of the last few days before the deadline.

Sir, thank you so much for such an informative session:) #lots of respect from India. Sir, would also like to have a session on "Creative thinking in design" or the so called "Out of the box thinking" (even in daily activities)... and how to nurture it as a habit; as i beileve it is that thinking which will take a designer to places.

In my extremely short experience of just 3 years as a draftsman, a true architect or "the boss" of a firm is the one that has top notch management of his or her time. Time management is the single most important subject for me as i am terrible at it. Thanks for your videos! Keep em coming.

Great summary Eric. You have absolutely captured the crux of time management. One thing I do believe you have left out in this is preparation. I have noticed that a lot of time is waisted, this more so in bigger firms and bigger project, when things are not properly prepared in advance. This is like setting up a meeting for the sake of setting up a meeting instead on knowing what the clear outcomes of this meeting should be, and in so doing not knowing what the input should be so people tend to just throw things at the wall and see what will stick.

The firm I worked in before used a software called 'documan', where they can track time spent by each employees each and everyday. It can tell you the specific task that they were onto too. I sometimes did get annoyed knowing the fact that i was being monitored everyday. But now watching your video, I look back and think from their perspective about how billing is related to time management. I mean I knew it was made sense. But your explanation through a small example can help people to understand its importance. Its really crucial guys. By the way, as always, great video and my pleasure. Cheers Eric.

very practical & hands-on! ......... making SD 40% of your time rather than CDs is a worthy (and difficult/challenging) goal -- because the quality of the project will most likely increase and quality is what the client remembers .... that is how a reputation is built - and the opportunity of being in the driver's seat re: winning high end/high fee projects/clients are won. ........ KEY issues are HOW to actually accomplish this .... plus handling OBSTACLES such as unexpected expenses - car repairs - computer maintenance and purchase of more computer stuff $$$$$ - family problems - etc. while staying ON SCHEDULE ...... (Fees will be another Comment). ty again for your excellent posts!

Great video. I'm now a forth year architecture student and I always get trouble with keeping up the deadlines. In the last 2 years, I have been always asking myself if I did choose the right path or not, cause beside architecture I really don't find anything interesting. When I watch your video, I admit that I usually get stuck on the floor plans a lot, how to make it good, does this affect the others or not, or how I should improve this disadvantages of the site, weather to the buildings ... and then come to the elevations, and the result is being late for the whole time. The late of the design leads to the late of turning it into the software working and of course, the late of the submitting. All of your videos are very useful and inspirational, sometimes they helped pulling the architecture passion back to me when I was desperate in designing buildings. I definitely try your tips for managing time and everything. Thank you for making this channel. Hope everything good will come to you.

Good and bad are terms of the master morality according to Nietzsche- you do a fantastic job adhering architecture and design principals to an existing market. I think it's obvious from your video that the design principals ALWAYS supersede requirements of the market. This is to think of something on a spectrum or naturally rather than with a dominion to a market biased pov. To see if something is going to be architect genius , remove the market and the constraint of time in boxes. Architecture is a conversation across time - Vitto

I would have liked if they used some of this in arc school so you keep a focus on that design and deliverables has to be accounted for. Making a deadline in a calender and pushing hours dont work well in the real world, where prices are relevant. It would make more consciousness of being a resource rather than these flashing their titles and dipomas, without having focus on the clients money.

Hi, so, i am trying to work in some rural cabins an houses, for this semester project, but i am struggling in making advances because, the houses an cabins have three variations each, the hard part is advancing with my 4 partners in this project, there are too many opinions in the base design for each one, it is hard coming to an agreement in some points, making too little advance week to week to our delivery dates with our teachers. I hope this fase ends soon, and having 4 partners makes it easier in the development of the project in drafting, graphics edition, model making etc. i think now having more workforce its making us slow.
@ap30087 жыл бұрын
Daniel Aguirre the best results that I had in arch school (conceptual stage) was when I was in a 2, maximum 3, member team. When we were 4 or 5, things started to get much more difficult... especially if there wasn't a strong, recognized by all, leader. But at the final stages, yes, the tasks can be asigned clearly to each member and a lot more gets done. And then is the thing that: the more members in a team, the more expectations the teachers have. And a team project doesn't always go smoothly.
@30by407 жыл бұрын
You might approach it as you would in professional practice - where you'll often be working in teams (unless you're a sole practitioner) - and that is: principal (in-charge), project architect > supporting staff (staff architects, job captain, draftspeople, etc.) Partner sets the design direction, project architect develops the design and leads the team to execute the work. It's all based on leadership though, someone has to lead and the team has to agree to be led. You're being tested - in part - on how well you can collaboratively make something of value. It's not easy...! When you begin working with contractors and owners and clients and budgets, and regulatory bodies in practice it's 10x this game. Figuring out how to get what you want and what's best for the work takes skill and lots of repetition to find a style that works for you. Good luck!
