I got into JiuJitsu soon after a serious motorcycle accident. My left ribcage is fubar. Several ribs fused together, concave where it should be convex, and that lung doesn't fully inflate. Basically all you have to do to tap me is get weight on my left side. The need to protect that side at all costs has really impacted my game. It's frustrating sometimes because I don't look like there's anything wrong, so some partners act like I'm some kind of situational wus. "Why would you tap to that?" Like I just need to improve my mindset to stop my lung from collapsing.

That's some of the most difficult things to convey. I had a black belt once fully extend my left arm - and I tap at like 125° and he was like "you need to fight it more, it can still go 40 more degrees" and I'm like nah. Never rolled with him again. Our journey is different and as long as we're moving forward, we're progressing.

I got my ribs folded one side from jits and now I get super spazzy when ppl put wheight or rotational force on it. Mines not nearly as bad ur guys issues but to a limited extend I understand man

I used to roll with a brown belt who had a prosthetic lower leg. If you tried to ankle lock it, a hatch would open and a scorpion would come out.

I'm writing this comment at view 1234. That Kyle is incredible with his movement skills for his disability. I have some research to do.. Great video Ed. Being open minded and humbe enouhg to ask some pretty serious questions and to have someone critique your skills online is very cool.

Meh, while I have an ego it's not so fragile to show my vulnerabilities online. If people want to talk smack, go ahead. It means very little to me. But if my friends, like you, Eli, and others do, I take pause and heed their critiques.

I have a disability where I use a wheelchair and I trained 4 years of karate and recently started doing BJJ and one thing my jiu jitsu instructor has told me since day 1 is that I shouldn’t let my disability discourage me from training or competing for that matter bc not only can jiu jitsu be made to work for anyone but even some champions in combat sports have had limitations like myself, I figured I’d tell this story to spread the message to others not to let any sorta condition stop u from doing what u wanna do 💪

very interesting discussion, really amazing to hear about it. as an asthmatic myself fresh in jiujitsu i often struggle with stamina during and across rolls, also certain hooks or positions are enough for me to tap due to pressure - which is frustrating sometimes but also an angle for improvement. i joke about it way more than my training partners and can only hope to not be a nuissance in their training time

Jiu-jitsu doesn't need adaptive categories, jiu-jitsu itself is adaptive, and you show that. How is it that you have fewer fingers on your hand?
