I feel burn out on a whole different level recently. I opened up my own game store in Feb and I sell GW products along with other mini games. There is not a single moment I'm at the shop that I'm not talking about the models, painting the models, watching everyone else play with their models and on and on. I feel burn out due to it being my job. So when I come home, the last thing I personally wanna do is paint, build or play any games. I'm just brain dead from info dumping and sometimes conversations that go south. Hopefully this will clear out soon and I can enjoy the hobby again. Thanks for the video, Jay.

I can’t remember the name of the guy that ran the local Games Workshop store that I walked into over 20 years ago , but he’s been one of the most influential impacts on my 33 years of life. I'm always impressed by the angles you find to talk about things. This could easily have been an "I won X at this event", or "I went to X event", but you manage to make such a compelling video framing it in a completely different way the people can relate to way more. Even I feel inspired to finally leave the house and find something going on locally.

hey jay glad to have met ya during the event. I am one of the AOS players that was there playing, and the vibe you were talking about it is a big part of the community, everyone I know who like myself came from 40k all agree that AOS is a breath of fresh air and right now much more enjoyable in our opinion. The event required battle ready painted armies to play but playing AOS with the grey is always a grand time. There was also a huge focus on hobby and painting with a lot of fantastic conversions so this was a more relaxed enviroment compared to other GT's however all in all it was a fantastic weekend of games, heywhoa has a stream going over the armies and some of them are an absolute delight to look at. Seeing and playing agaisnt other extremely well done armies is what help kicked my hobby burnout and now im painting almost 5k points worth of stormcast, it also help that the group i am with, Broken ranks, kept pushing me to have a painted army after so many RT with grey minis. Time to slay the grey!

Going to a LGS can definitely help with burnout. When I went to the Warhammer store in Akihibara, Tokyo (which you should all check out if you're ever in Japan. Its huge and has the best gaming tables and terrain ive ever seen in any LGS. it even has a cafe) i saw two people playing a 2000 pt game and asked if I can watch them since im a beginner. Hanging out with them definitely wanted me to keep painting my models once I got back to my home country.

A little TMI that may help: i realised that i used to burn out due to something deeper - long story short, i was using hobbying obsessively to cover up anxiety or some sort of undiagnosed adhd or something like that. Any other fix was purely cosmetic and didnt do much for me. Once I started fixing myself with the help of therapy and all that (for unrelated issues - generalised anxiety - no meds needed) i started finding moderation, and now i still hobby but not nearly as much, and still love it.

Whenever I feel like I want to hobby but have no drive to hobby, I grab a 1 off model I don't care about and try something new. Base coating and higlighting with nothing but sponging, using vibrant colors I don't normally use, or only dry brushing the everything but the tiny details. Within a few minutes i start to see something cool and my hobby mind kicks on and starts to drive again.

@@mercuryrising9758 Ha interesting I came across that way. I've always felt I have the opposite of ADD where I'm hyper focused/obsessive on things that interest me and then I burn out after a few months and move on but maybe that is a form of it? It also feels linked to my perfectionism where I research and research and go very meticulously so that I make little progress and also build up the tasks too much in my mind. It turns into pressure or a chore and then I get turned off. My mother specializes in learning disorders and I was never diagnosed with it as far as conventional education and learning...

Personally I have a list of things in my head I “need” to finish and the things I want to do. I never push myself to hard to finish the “need” list and when I start getting really sick of it I move on to something I’ve been looking forward too. I also can’t just rush out and army just to play. Every model has to be painted to a certain level of satisfaction or I won’t call it done. If I really just can’t sit down to paint that day or I wont get into it then I just wont. Usually a couple hours of stomping as skarbrand in warhammer 3 will get me back in the mood.

I had a dsicussion on reddit about hobby burn out in the DnD community and this was my advice for people feeling worn out. I think it is applicable to war games too. Switch it up: go buy and play some alternatives to DnD. Let those other games inspire new directions to take your players and allow yourself to import interesting mechanics from other games. A few suggestions in no particular order: Cairn, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Shadowdark, D20, Call of Cthuhlu, Into the Odd, and Cyberpunk. Collaborate: find someone who you can share your ideas with. Find out what ideas excites them. What seems a bit thin. Use them to inspire you. Keep Going: keep playing and keep DMing. A plateau isn't overcome by taking a break. You will continue to grow and learn as you go, but you have to keep going to get those benefits. Emulate: find a DM irl or online that is very different from you and learn somethings from them that you wouldn't normally focus on.

My solution to burnout was to change what I was painting, I can spend weeks just painting one Blood Angel model, sinply because of the way that I paint, I paint to Parade Standard and I don't like to batch painting I recently cracked open my first Tyranid kit out of my massive pile of shame from Leviathan + Extra kits for my 1K list and blued together my first Hormagaunt Not only was it much faster assembling the Nids than the Marines, but it was fun to learn how new colours worked together, plus the entirely organic shapes made for faster and easier painting steps and it doesn't need to be as clean So my recommendation for hobby burnout is to paint something entirely different, with different colours that you're used to, it might just be the refresher that you need and you may learn something new for your regular models

For me, I go from hand-painting centric modelling (miniatures) to build centric models (Gunpla, mecha-musume), or large scale models (statues, terrains, even cosplay) before moving back to miniatures. As I'm starting to get into prop Replicas they're expensive so i have to limit how much LEGO i collect in addition to not having a whole lot of space I'm having to really decide what i want to keep and what i want to put ins storage i kind of like it as it focuses me more on my collections/waves. But I've definitely experienced the "i want to but don't want to" feeling with the amount of unboxed sets i have and as they're larger sets i can't really build them as i have no space to display them💀💀💀 and with my growing Speed Champions sets I'm thinking of getting wall mounted displays. The problem with LEGO though is that it Retires (i don't know if Warhammer figures retire also) but the FOMO, more so not just wanting to spend 2-5x MRP so you have to buy them now and store them for later. As I'm not into a lot of hobbies/collecting I'm not too burnt out 🙏🏾. But If i ever get into Warhammer 40K, i think I'd just stick to Ultramarines/Salamanders and Tyrinds 😫. I'd like to get Thousand sons and the Necrons 🥵 but they really expensive and time consuming but it seems fun ngl 😅.

After 30+ years I switched my Warhammer to warlord Bolt Action mini's for WW2 themes. It's interesting to collect mini's with real history and learn more about that pivotal time period via Netflix documentaries. Of course I'll not ditch my love for Warhammer.

The idea is, keep the mind occupied by constantly forcing it to think, and gain influence by the environment. Started this on 1 January 2024. It's now 21 October, and I'm up to 282,000 words, or 595 pages! I'm a bit behind, being out of town a lot this summer. There's a lot of days where I feel burnout. Still I force myself to do it. i feel that, if I put it for even a day, my attitude will lessen to the point I will lose interest and forget the project altogether.

Where on earth is he going to find the time to get out and play a bunch of games. He still stays in the hobby by painting his armies and is used to be up early bc he has to get the kids ready for school. There is a reason why aos is the Dad's game. It's not a bad thing
