That annoys me, 'ohh yay she's cured!' People with misophonia can never be cured!! They can adapt and react better with treatment and time, but it never goes away! I'm struggling so much with misophonia, and keep trying to get treatment to help

i have misophonia - and i can tell you, it's not a fear you can "get over." it's not like a fear of heights; if you try really hard you can control it. you CANNOT control misophonia. every time i have an episode, i know my behaviour isn't rational. but i can't stop the reaction, no matter how hard i try.

I have been a Misophonia sufferer for 35 yrs. In addition to the misery it brings it has been getting worse and more sounds trigger my anxiety. I saw this clip and in desperation contacted the Speakmans, they invited me to take part in a clinical study they are undertaking. I was hugely sceptical but being 'untreatable' felt it was my only option. My session was yesterday and today my life is changed. I ate with my family and sat next to an apple eater in a work canteen - unbelievable!

There's a difference between a phobia and a dislike for the sound. Most of my friends claim to have this phobia and it really annoys me. People like that undermine people who really do suffer from this phobia.

For me the crunching isn't bad, it's the sound of the saliva in the mouth while swallowing, lip smacking, throat clearing, yawning, coughing, slurping while drinking, gum chewing, and the rustling of popcorn in a bag.

I have this and it is literally the worst thing. On some days my misophonia is worse than others. I only feel the anxiety when it's people in my family and when it's at its worse I have to leave the room. Recently it has progressed to visual stimuli; I can't even look at my family when we're at the dinner table. I want to get treatment but my parents don't understand. Misophonia sucks :p

I have this and you don't get it from just watching a TV show. I've had it since I was really little I never liked loud repetitive noises. I didn't watch any shows... I hate when people eat, Munch, crunch, breathe, sniffle, cough, tap a pencil against a desk or something... There's a lot. I use head phones to block it out. Or I go in another room.

I hate to doubt her, but unless her misophonia is very slight, she would not be smiling and chatting when she heard the sound (even on TV). She'd be trying to restrain herself from screaming, punching them all, and running out of the studio--I know because I have misophonia. If I'm wrong I apologize...but I just cannot imagine someone with misophonia reacting that calmly. Plus they call it a 'fear' of sounds. I wouldn't call it fear, I'd call it rage and hatred.

I am so glad that I am not alone in having such blood curdling rage from noises. I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate the people next door because they WILL NOT FIX THEIR BROKEN CAR!!! I struggled for YEARS to find a quiet place to live, and within two months, this awful, lazy, fat, family moved across the street with this noisy broken car and it makes me want to kill myself every f**king day. I work nightshifts and the lack of sleep is literally making me insane. WHAT DO I DO!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

It's a relief to learn that there is a name to this "Phobia" (Phonia) and other people obviously share my suffering. I don't remember what triggered my Misophonia as it started more than 20 years ago (age 12-14). It's not only that eating and sniffing noises make me angry I also feel ashamed of it as other people either find it funny or abnormal (or both). If there was a way to cure this, this would make my life so much better.

Mine started when my mother screamed at my cousin for chewing ice and sent him home. Ever since then I notice gum smacking, pop corn eaters, ice eaters, dry mouth people, people who suck on candies. I hate living this way. And it enrages me the 10% of the people who smack. And they chew gum extra fast not like normal people.

Good to see that I am not the only one. After long years I found out Misophonia. Actually it is not strong for me because I could watch this video, but in real world I could not stand it. The worst for me is with my family, I can't sit with them behind the table while eating. I have to go my room, close the doors and eat alone. I can't stand noises and looking at them while eating. Of course they could not understand that and each day there are arguments about it when I get rage. Today I showed them articles about this.. I hope they will undrestand.

The way my mom pronounces the letter 'p' (I hear a slight clicking sound from it that drives me MAD!), and sometimes the letter 'b' (depending on the word). Also, my husband makes smacking and salivary sounds while he eats that so incredibly annoying. It's hard to live with this, I can relate to this woman.

That is precisely why I live alone and always, always, always will. I cannot stand other people making noise, especially when it's in MY SPACE. The outside "society" noises are fine -- garbage trucks, snowplows ship/fog horns -- but as soon as an INDIVIDUAL decides to make noise and POLLUTE the air for everyone else, I fly into a murderous rage. I cannot stand it. I wish I could go back in time and murder the person that created the leaf blower....................and don't get me started on weekend warriors firing up their table saws at 7am on a Saturday. WHY ARE PEOPLE SO INCONSIDERATE!?!?!?!?!?

i have misophonia. it is probably one of the most frustrating things to live with! nothing seems to help me except for actually vocalizing that a sound annoys me. for example, if someone is chewing loudly, it helps for me to say something to them because i then become more comfortable knowing that they are aware of the annoying noise and will try to be careful about it. there really needs to be a cure for this soon!

To learn more about the disorder, read Sound-Rage. A Primer of the Neurobiology and Psychology of a Little Known Anger Disorder (Chalcedony Press, 210 pgs) , available from amazon.com.uk and amazon.com. The book provides compelling evidence that “misophonia” is a developmental, neurological disorder, and presents detailed information about trigger expansion, emotions, cognitions and therapies. I hope this helps.

This lady created the 4S illness for herself by feeling bad, having empathy, for the person on TV talking about their illness. For those who have never heard about the illness, how is it that they can end up with the illness? What is the difference between the two types of people? This lady had just one trigger that was self-induced, what treatment is there for people who don't self-induce the illness and who have multiple triggers? If this was such a great healer of the disease, why do so many people still have it over 2 years later? Does this mean it was only good for the people who self-induce the illness onto themselves by feeling bad for someone else? Does this mean there's not a one size fits all type treatment?

It's not fake. I didn't even know there was a term for it, or that it was even an established neurological disorder until very recently. Yet, ever since I was 9, I couldn't stand the constant repetition of something like gulping with sounds, loud eating, constant coughing/throat clearing, etc. Without experiencing some form of unreasonable irritation that only got worse with every time the sound was repeating itself. Most cases of Misophonia all share the exact same, or similar symptoms.

I naturally noticed this condition during junior high/high school. It would get so bad that I couldn't pay attention to lessons because of the classroom full of loud ignorant kids. I also have Misokinesia which is when seeing somebody move erratically really annoys me, like when somebody is twitching their leg up and down for no reason, or when people bite/chew on their fingers/nails. I routinely despised test times, even though I always scored well, because of the so called "silence".

My daughter has this and this video has totally enraged me the way crunching would enrage someone who had misophonia. This video made it appear that a person makes a choice to get it and that with a swipe of a wand it is gone. What a crock! First of all for the most part people say there is no cure. There are things that you can learn to make the situation less unbearable but I do not believe that in 30 minutes they fix this woman nor that she brought it on herself

It's a neurological disorder; it's not something we can help. The extremely common argument that "another person's (insert sound source here) isn't ok, but theirs is" is a misinformed argument at best. The emotional reaction is literally built into our brains, so someone who's normally calm, and tolerant can for a split second become irrationally irritated because of that certain trigger.

it's absolutely irresponsible for any editor to put to view a story on a condition that initiates a negative response from the very people who are interested in trying to cope with this condition. I don't like this - it makes misophonia look like a mild joke that can be cured in half an hour. What did they do during that interval? Pump her with drugs? I'm sorry - but I bet she got home and it quickly came back again. This video just frustrated me. I believe the cure to getting over it is simply LOTS of hard work. Especially with recent research showing how much plasticity the brain has.

For me my disgust of the sound of people who make lots of noise eating or chewing gum stems from my father's behaviour. He was a very passive agressive person and who would make excessive noise eating as well as other ways of expressing meeting hostilité (saying hurtful things and or endangering people physically i.e. turning on a cément mixer while his son was cleaning it with his arm inisde or driving dangerously with passengers). He was repeatedly asked if he could make less noise but never made the slightest effort and in fact would move closer to others and continue to make noise. When one has this past experience how is one supposed to get over it. I sometimes wear ear plugs if someone is chewing gum with their mouth open or put on music with guests who make lots of noise at table.

The word sensitive in this video is taken out of context. And it's nothing like fingernails down a blackboard, that is actually music to my ears compared to other things. When I hear some sounds, like the host deliberately crunching, it has much lesser effect, yet if he was doing it next to me in another situation I would go nuts, which makes me think this could be psychological, but I don't know. The negative association I'm not so sure about. I get the same anxiety when I see people yawn.

I doubt that she really has misophonia or anything of the like. The whole thime he was chewing she was smiling and laughing as if it was a joke! Whenever I hear one of my trigger sounds I get so furious its visible!! One of my friends that was eating asked me why did I look like a "psychopathic serial killer". I also think that whole "way to cure it by replacing her memory of that show" and stuff is a complete load of BULL!!

Wow - I couldn't listen to this clip. How misguided do you have to be to include the VERY TRIGGER SOUNDS that cause anxiety and very real revulsion to those who would be searching out this information? It's like having strobing lights on a video about epliepsy.

This video is really irritating. Why would they add a bunch of obnoxious crunch noises to a story about people who get anxiety and anger over those noises? It is just pointlessly insensitive. And the guys stupid grin when he stares at her as he eats makes me want to slap him. She said she was annoyed by the noises, do you not believe her and need to inflict unnecessary discomfort for your own enjoyment or something?

Sorry, Nik and Eva, this is a load of rubbish. There's absolutely no way she was "cured" within half an hour. Better research should have been done before this segment was aired -- Misophonia is not the FEAR of sound, but the HATRED of sounds. It doesn't come on because you 'watch a tv show and try to imagine what it's like.'' It happens without any outside influence and more often than not from a very early age (i.e. I started when I was 4! I would scream and cry at certain noises/actions and nobody knew why!) I'm sorry to sound horrible, but in my honest opinion, she's pretending. Her reaction the first time round - smiling and laughing! - tells everything. A real Misphonia sufferer would be HIGHLY uncomfortable and wouldn't be happy staying in that situation. I wouldn't be surprised if this was someone they've pulled off the street and given lines to say.
