Overcoming my Thalassophobia | The Subnautica Experience
I recently streamed my first playthrough of Subnautica and I learned that it is one of the most unique games out there and it offers an experience that no other game can. This game has always been on my radar because of my fear of the ocean. I knew this is a game that I had to play at some point, and I'm glad I did. In today's video I will be talking about my experience with Subnautica from a critical standpoint as well as showing you guys some highlights from my stream series!

Also Xbox and PC are waaaaay more stable. Like I don't think it's fair to say it's badly optimised or the developer fucked it just because PS4 is hot garbage and ps5 might not be good yet with general 3rd party optimisation

Surefire way to raise anxiety to maximum: watch a first time Subnautica player obliviously swim around the Aurora while roars can be heard in the background.

I've been a huge fan since early development and it was a life changing experience playing it back in 2014, it is in my unqualified opinion that everyone deserves to play subnautica with no former information available. The game is incredibly good at assuring you that you are not the alpha predator. It lures you into a false sense of security just to stab you in the back and leave you terrified. Thank you for listening to my Ted talk

I really do think Subnautica offers an experience that no other survival game can. Going in blind was the best decision, and streaming my first play through was so fun, interacting with chat and just having a good time. Even 2 years later, it’s still one of my favourite stream series. Thanks for watching!

To the Sea Treader thing, there are quite a few animals that don't get used for anything, whether for food, materials, scares, or anything else. They're not there *to* be used. They're just existing in their natural habitat, and you're meant to find your place in it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

That was a fantastic video, George. Really liked the hybrid-like structure with the changing between reviewing the game and the stream highlights; the highlights brought back some great memories from watching the stream series. Would love to see you do more experimental type videos like this in the future too. Looking forward to the Below Zero streams in the future :)

The lack of autosave makes me nervous constantly and I find myself saving every ten minutes. The game has surprisingly never crashed on me even though I play on a MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM. Would still definitely like to get a PC at some point so I don't have to play at the lowest graphics settings all the time.

@@gamingkillingorder2355 That's true and for me it's never given me a problem. I'm just saying I sometimes worry about the game crashing and not having saved so I save often. On hardcore mode, I usually save and exit, then reload every couple hours at least.

Ik this video is old now but the sea empress did try and talk to the precursors, but for some reason they couldnt hear her. They were on the right track with the babies, but in their greed they tried to do everything too fast. Which you can see an example of at the research facility, where they ripped a fetus from its egg. The aliens had the answer infront of them, with the portals and the eggs, but they had become so brutal and desperate they couldnt see it.

as someone who's been a fan of subnautica a good while before full release (I think the most recent update at the time was "Castles and Coffee") its so good to see people playing this game I love so much blind in the full release. admittedly, I'm jealous. I wish I could experience this game for the first time again. I suffer from the same two main phobias as this lad by the way it's moments like getting stranded in your Cyclops with no power left that make the game what it is, and it is fantastic also, yes the game is poorly optimised, but it's not fair to say the devs don't care, they care so incredibly much about these games, they are working on it, it will be improved. the credits song goes way harder than it has any right to upon rewatching, I still think you were way too harsh on the optimisation issues, specifically saying "they don't care" or "didn't bother" isn't fair, the devs have and still are working their asses off to make the game as enjoyable as possible. Unknown Worlds are so passionate about Subnautica

The sad reality is that Subnautica was never designed for usage on consoles (as far as I know.). Those crashes you mentioned rarely (if ever) happen on PC. That's not a diss. It just goes to show what this game was and was not designed to run on. Nothing more. Nothing less. Though I do understand the frustration of unexpected game crashes.

I also have this fear. This game helped me understand my fear. I'm not scared of water or anything, more so what could POSSIBLY be there and so not knowing what to expect was terrifying. Yet, it helped me learn to cope better with that fear because it can get so overwhleming that i basically go into hermit mode and just avoid stuff that makes me think of it. I think the best feeling is seeing yourself being courageous. Once you take that first step and then keep going, it really gets easier to handle the fear. You just have to push yourself so whoever is reading this, If you have a fear that inables you from doing something you want to do, trust me when i say, push yourself to do it. Don't overwhelm yourself BUT try to get over that fear because all it is, is just these parts of your brain going into survival mode and everything or such. If you want to conquer a fear, you've got to place yourself with that fear and understand it. It's not scary anymore once you understand it.

I never played Subnautica on console, but I do have to say I rarely experienced any serious bugs once the full game came out on PC. The pop-in was much less an issue than in early access and I don't think had any or very rare crashes, nothing serious enough that stands out in my memory. As others in the comments said, it sucks that the game is less optimised on console, as PC players will have a much different experience playing this game.

A Thalssophobic playing "Subnautica"? This will be very entertaining.;) 41:38 There was a Thalassophobic player who created an above-sea-level base, putting Multipurpose Rooms on just-under-the-surface Foundations. Every player has a unique experience in "Subnautica," but this was something else!;) 43:05 Not every player finds the Sea Treaders. 54:50 I've read that's "Spiderman-ing along" once you get the hang of the Grapple Arm. PS4? PS5? As a "keyboard commando" from the "Space Quest" days, I learned to "save often/after you've accomplished something." 58:40 Considering the level of detail in the game, it's amazing that there aren't more major display problems. (You haven't lived until you have to go on a "pixel-by-pixel" hunt in early Sierra Online RPGs.;) I have come to the conclusion that the "Space Quest" hero, "Roger Wilco" is a distant relative to "Ryley Robinson." (Both are "Space Janitors.";) 1:05:00 Believe it or not, some skilled "Subnautica" players got by without building the Cyclops until the final chapter. (Build several small bases on the way to visit the Sea Emperor.) Yep, playing Big Game Hunter/kill the Boss Alien in "Subnautica" is a waste of time. 1:20:50 Play "Subnautica: Below Zero" and a few of the nagging questions you have about the Aliens and Marguerite Maida will be answered. 1:21:49 Neebs Gaming are the ones letting you know about the Captain's cabin door code.;) 1:26:55 Aww, you didn't repaint the Neptune in strange colors or give it a "Boaty McBoatface"-type name.;) So, "Ryley Robinson," how are you going to "pay Alterra's bill"? "Subnautica," an Experience masquerading as a mere game.

I actually didn't make the cyclops until the very end of my playthrough. It just seemed big and unwieldy so I ignored it once I found out that the prawn suit could go just as deep. I just had 2 bases, one in the grassy plains, and one in the bluish cave with that big tree thing in the underground river. I was actually really annoyed when I was building the rocket at the end and realized that I had to include a cyclops shield generator, but that you could only build one using the fabricator inside a cyclops. So I had to go gather a bunch of stuff to build a cyclops, just so I could make the shield generator for my rocket.

I dont agree with what you said about being able to kill the big creatures. I think it enforces two things in the game. 1, Making it hard to kill the big creatures makes you more inclined to just run away from them, rather than fight. Fighting and killing something makes you not so scared of it, bc you know you can defeat it. But just running away instead, it instills the fear in you that it could always be behind you. And 2, it makes you feel bad. You spend a long time taking down these beasts and then you find out for example with the dragon, that there are only a few of them left in the world. You then look at the one youve killed and realise what youve done. It makes YOU feel like the monster.

I love this game so much, even with all its performance issues. Nothing else quite like it, not even its sequel Below Zero, which I found lacking in comparison to the original. Closest game to give me similar vibes is Outer Wilds, though it has less to do with crafting & survival mechanics, and is more a game about exploration & accumulation of knowledge. Highly recommended for those who enjoy more complex stories and like gradually piecing together information to progress further into the story. Truly masterpiece titles, the both of them. Best experience (much like Subnautica), is to play thru it completely blind with no knowledge of the game whatsoever, for optimal effect. Great vid too BTW!

Regarding optimization, due to the nature of early access it is optimized BETTER on OLDER cards. For example I am running a Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 and run it at 60 fps maxed with no drops, while my friend with a much better card struggles.

Glad you enjoyed the game! Sucks that you had such a hard time with the game's performance. Unfortunately it is one of "those" games, built on and for pc and its clear the porting process was...problematic. i also used to play on ps4 and it would stutter and pop in was bad and i had issues of full chunks not loading and just being a hole into out of bounds. I switched to pc and its night and day, and my pc isnt even that fancy. I'll never go back to console and thats a shame really.
