What I find amazing is procrastination is often a self defense mechanism to avoid stress or pain. The thing is our brain stops us taking action to avoid pain or difficulty, instead choosing comfort

Procrastination makes easy things hard and the hard things harder. The greatest amount of wasted time is the time not getting started. A year from now, you wish you had started today. Hi guys! It's me again :) You might have seen me before but my desire to inspire more people is what keeps me pushing to reach out more. We own a cookie shop business in our college town. When we first started it, we just graduated college and were living in our car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. I started it out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And how we have our first storefront location (a second one currently under construction but launching soon!) We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams.

And sometimes when you go to project plan... that's when you have to have the bravery, to look at where you're actually going and face it. You wanted the dream and now it's like "How much do you really want it? How much are you prepared to step outside your comfort zone and do this completely new thing and be in this completely new space?" It's easy to say "100%!" when you're not looking at it square in the eye. When you really get close to your dream there's the sudden last minute doubt, the creeping insecurities that say "Wow, that WILL be different, so much new responsibility, so many new things....Can I really handle this?" But you can, you just gotta break through the barrier of breaking it down into managable chunks, seeing it for what it is, and GOING FOR IT :)

Project Plan + YES, Visualization + YES, Socialize: I understand the accountability factor, but I think it also gives BIG PROCRASTINATORS a false sense of acomplishment...so I personally would heed caution about that one. But Brendon is the expert ;)
@FutileGrief

I was going to say the same exact thing. Studies have shown that if you speak your goals, it will give a false sense of accomplishment that will make them think they already did the thing so they don't act upon it.

Great tips, Brendon. I have a major objective coming up: cracking the Google Tech Interview in April & May. Initially, I was honestly overwhelmed by the opportunity on an hourly basis. Luckily, I watched your previous video on dealing with overwhelming. Since then, I have been consistently meditating every day. It does help along with some positive affirmation in the morning. Regarding procrastination, I have a timeline for each week until the end of April and I have been visualising what happens after I get an offer. I guess what I am lacking are a) visualising the preparation process - that's why I am procrastinating on harder algorithm topics, b) socialise my agenda with others - I guess I wasn't sure how to handle the "shame" if I don't get in and others might make joke about me because of it. So I would like to change and to share with you guys my objective. Thanks for reading this long thread.

I am disabled and have difficulty recalling what is said or read. I have found taking notes and telling people about what I am learning from the notes really helos. And since I started sharing about my intentions I am doing more than just sitting. I am crocheting a baby snuggle blanket, and creating an Easter tree from papier maché. It really does motivate me to plan what I will do each day. Walking to check the mail and socialize is very challenging because I have learned that it means an entire evening and a day or two severe back and hip pain with fatigue. There are so many things that I can not do but The Brendon Show is really making g a difference in my life, one that I can share with friends and family too. You are really making the difference I want to make and I'm hooked on your presentations Brendon. You personal growth speeches on your show are priceless.

Making my bed is a big process, taking bedding off my bed washing my sheets blankets pillowcases underlay blah blah and than entails me hanging it on clothesline waiting all day for it to dry, the hard part putting underlay back on fitted sheet top sheet quilt cover on quilt, than on bed, pillows ugh 😩 pillowcases on pillows , finally decoration pillows ! End of this process is rewarding! Comfy bed and the very much needed vital sleep cause sleep is goals and sleep is life

I have tips for socializing with super secret people: create a no friend fb page just to communicate to your future kids/or an adult version of them. Your dream will be never judged, nobody knows your own secret or next big move. You have lessons to teach and inspire your kids when they grow up and deal with the same problem. I do have a fb like this, and it really works.

This video really sums it up. I kept putting off my dreams for a long time, just content to get along in life with no heavy investments. But now the accountability thing is showing up more and more. I can dig it. I think entire segments of my old personality are losing their grip. The process to self actualization is a long one. I guess I would wake up in the morning and be content without planning anything major. But as anxiety mounts when I don't get things done, I feel happy to know what is actually required for a life of success.

I have tried to do the things you're talking about since 2017. That year I was planning the projects to be done around the house and my husband died. The next year I dug in again and was making some progress when my daughter's boyfriend proposed, which made 2019 a different calendar: everything was about the wedding. In 2020 I was sure this would be the time I would fulfill the plans I had written down, then COVID caused me to have to shelter in place with my daughter and son-in-law for 2 months. This made it hard to do the projects I had at home an hour away. Then came the 3 surgeries I had which caused me to have to be with them again for recovery for 3 months. I did manage to keep my customers happy with their websites. I haven't been able to have a routine and now the holidays and tax season are staring me in the face along with a disastrous house and yard. I am going to re-watch your video and try this again every day for 3 weeks. I know that's how long it takes to form a habit. Ironically it only takes 3 DAYS to form a bad habit.

Brendon, the first two factors you said is completely true and I can't agree with you anymore (and thanks for sharing it with us ) but the third one, I don't approve of it. When you tell people the thing that you're going to do, probably because they (your friends ) will give you a positive response like "oh that's great", your mind starts to consider that as a finished task and make you feel satisfied and accomplished. Thus when it comes to doing the task, you're out of motivation because your mind has already rewarded you!

Probably the most powerful video I've seen and needed. I do this with uni work every time then end up comprising on my standards as I've not done the planning and research or not allowed myself the time to do this. I don't feel I work well to deadlines. Yet if I planned I don't think it would be an issue. I just think there are too many variables that need doing like the fundamentals. Definitely agree with the planning and visualising. Let's see how I get on with the next essay with all this in mind.

TL;DR 📝 [1] Summary: Focuses on overcoming procrastination using three brain hacks. [2] The most significant points are: 📝 Project Planning: Plan the steps and timeline for your projects and tasks to improve productivity. 💭 Visualization: Visualize your day or tasks to mentally prepare yourself for taking action. 🗣 Socialize Your Agenda: Share your plans and goals with others to create accountability. [3] Examples include: 🧩 Completing a puzzle faster when the picture becomes clearer. 🏋‍♀ Having a workout buddy to improve accountability. [4] Important data and research findings: 📈 Speaking out your goals makes you more likely to take consistent action. [5] Actionable recommendations: 🌙 Project plan the day before or the morning of your tasks. 🌅 Visualize your entire day and tasks, including how you'll handle struggles. 📣 Share your agenda with others to create a sense of accountability.
