It’s an absolute pleasure and an eye-opening experience for me to sit with you and discuss these topics. The hobby can be so much deeper than applying paint to plastic. For some, that’s what it’ll always be and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. For others, it’s a lifeline. And then there’s every degree in between. I feel like we all have the capacity to experience any one of these feelings at any time in our lives. In my opinion, the one thing that remains consistent is a mindset of acceptance no matter how we choose to engage and you’ve been instrumental in demonstrating the more vulnerable side of that experience. That takes courage. Something our grim dark world could use more of. Thank YOU, for including me and us in your journey.

So, I, as a parent lost my little girl. 15 months. My world shattered before my eyes. And one day, trying to keep my head busy, found PlayOn Tabletop channel, and VT and finaly MWG channel. So I decided to start to watch more to learn the game and how to paint. Enroled my very close friend and we baught the 9th edition big starter box. I kept the SM and he took the Necrons. Since then, I have a purple Space Wolves representing my girl, it was her color. This hobby and you guys from these channel prob saved my life, i still today, paint in the middle of the night watching you guys so I dont drift away. And again, with this little 12 minutes video, showing these emotion, made me remind myself that I still can be the father my little 4 yeays old son wants me to be. I cant to play with him, cuz you know, he want to roll all my dices :). Sorry for the wall of text, or the destruction of the english language since its not my first language. Just a big tx u to all of you for keeping the positive videos, the good games and content. Felt good to type this comment, again, tx u. I wish the best for all of you and whoever took the time to read this.

Then my children, I shall listen for your call from whatever realms of death hold me, and come I shall no-matter what laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime." - Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves -

People like you are the reason I see light at the end of the tunnel. The reason I want to be a better person. Thank you for sharing. I know your baby girl looks down at you with pride. I haven’t had a child of mine pass. But I haven’t got to see my son in a very long time, I think about him every single day. And only recently thru seeing these videos and people and how much good they are doing, gives me purpose. I used to think I would never be able to bring value to my life again. And, putting simply, I want to be a role model in whatever capacity like Box has become. Someone with love for not only the game, but treating people with love and care in the best capacity because why would they not deserve otherwise. I hope more people can feel the enlightenment they bring as I have. Thank you for sharing. I know your girl is so happy for you. I hope one day our paths cross and maybe share the same kind of feelings these guys have about the game and each other. Good luck

Stephen is a good dude, and it's cool to see him finally come out of his shell. At first he was very 'formal' and defensive, but now he's far more himself since he's met a lot of people in the Warhammer content creator space. He's realised that there's nothing wrong with just being yourself. It's been good to watch VT's growth on KZbin.

Bravo to both of you. It's hard to talk about inner turmoil and the shame and pain of working through bullying and learning how to stand on your own two feet. I've been playing for over 30 years at this point, since Rogue Trader, and was an Outrider for GW for about a decade, teaching people how to play, running demos, running tournaments, acting as con support staff. I've had the joy of people coming to me and telling me how they remember their first demo game with me and now they're collectors and players and have even gotten others into the hobby. I've even had podcasts and KZbin channels where I talked about 40k and other minis games. I'm so glad to see content creators like the two of you leading the way in the hobby now, you're bringing in new people and doing it the right way. Thank you both for picking up the torch and making it burn brighter than I ever thought would be possible. I'm not a wargamer myself because I'm more into tabletop rpgs (started with D&D 3rd ed sort of 20 years ago) but I deeply understand what this video tries to bring out of our inner selves. As I'm not a very sociable person (I can feign it well since i'm lucky enough to have got the skills but that's it) and even when i tried i couldn't integrate myself without feeling like i was killing my soul, I went from wanting to "be normal" to rejecting any compromise as "I am this and you can like or dislike it but don't bother me". Being lucky enough having true friends on my side, I can surely state that i came out of my teens walking tall but recently i noticed something worriesome: trpgs became sort of trendy and i fear the community 'll become just like that of videogames. Gatekeeping, elitarian, toxic and totally not safe for the new entries and in general for those who seek refuge in it. As if there are "normal cool nerds" and "shamefull nerds" and a new division and exclusion will be born. I just say "beware".

A very touching video. I have recently decided to sign up to VT because I really like their group and as a new player I think it's the people you play with and learn from that make it for you and their emphasis on being a good opponent whether you win or lose is really decent. I remember being a kid and WH being described as geeky and being bullied so I didn't take it up only doing so walking past a shop in my 30s I really look back now and think I should have just done it then as the community and being around others who paint and play is a really fun collective experience. I'm glad Steven is doing well and Chaos Dave is just a genuinely awesome guy.

That moment, when Dave told Stephen , "we have a spartan in our wargaming community!", was the moment where a herculean brother of strength assured and was fully proud of his herculean brother Stephen. Nor only that, but a moment where he told about the reality of his stand, one that has been a tough battle that seems to have no end, and it's beginning was not known. Yet, Dave made it clear that the legacy that Stephen has is, was, and will still be progressing to godhood in its totality! I love it, such a great moment of assurance and emotional acknowledgement!

I'm so happy that he has finally been able to be himself. It's all to common for people who look like he does and become a target for people to harass and mock for what he enjoys doing. People like him, Travis Willingham, Paul Wright, Mark Sinclair and others who openly talk about their love for dnd, Warhammer, and anything like it helps push it forward and show the world that the stereotype isn't what people expect and it's a hobby for everyone and there shouldn't be any shame for playing these. I hope and wish him all the best and to keep pushing and being the amazing teacher his is! Keep being who you are, the world is a better place for it.

This hit hard, much appreciation for sharing I remember growing up and there weren't a lot of Asian kids at my local shop who played. Whevern I painted my elves, they said that they aren't suppose to have black hair, got made fun of at school, etc I left whole hobby in high school, focused on martial arts instead. Later in collage I found a group of friends who happened to be into Warhammer and D&D. They made me feel welcome Finding a group of folks to share in the hobby is so key, and I'm so happy that there is an online presense for new players to feel accepted

I'm trying to do the same thing Stephen is doing, for veterans at the local gaming store I work at. I'm a veteran myself and I'm trying to create something that veterans in the area can have that doesn't focus on what's wrong with them and can give them a positive outlet, or even just something to do, when they come back from the service. That was my biggest issue when I came back; there was (and still is) nothing for us when we return that doesn't place an emphasis on all of the negatives of having served; the trauma, the injuries, the homelessness, the unemployment, the inability to fit in, all of that. It's soul crushing and I'm trying to get something going that allows fellow vets to feel like they have a place to go where they can escape from that, even if it's just for a few hours.

I am writing this before the video premieres, as i am sure that once upon a time, all of us have gone through this. It may have occurred many years ago by this point to some of us, or quite literally as we speak to others. I am not aware how severe this situation was before the turning of the millennium, but, at least where i come from, and at a younger age, being ridiculed was the norm for me. I was not interested in many things my peers were by that point in junior high school (it was towards the end of the last year that it climaxed). Football was not my thing, i was playing basketball but i was not madly in love with it. I was not into trying to get a girlfriend, and i gotta admit i was chubby back then (hehe). So i turned my attention to warhammer and especially Gotrek and Felix, the books that, alongside my father, uncle and Miniwargaming brought me into the hobby. But painting minis and reading books was seen by many guys as...a sissy's hobby (could not find the proper term for the word). I still have the torn books and pages, and the broken minis from that time. Teachers were taking my side, but these dudes simply did not care, and quite a few girls supported them. I do not know if that whole part made me angry and bitter towards my peers (like an Iron Warrior, hehe) but it certainly made my mouth, soul and heart the Iron Cage for such unfortunate souls. Thankfully, i have found this community, where i can be me, even if not to the fullest due to restrictions i have at the moment. But i am simply free, to roam around the halls of this community, alone or with friends, chatting with with amazing people and even having the opportunity to write small stories of my own. This is me just rambling around to be honest, so to get to the point, i know the pain, the fear, the shame of being a wargamer. And that is why people like you are my heroes. Dave being Kharn and Steve being Dante. Keep it up champions and let blood flow forevermore in the name of wargaming. See you on the fields of gore!

Be Proud of your hobby. I know people who tell me they wish they could be like me, to find a fun hobby to hang around likeminded people. Deep inside they wish they were brave enough to play with adult toys.

I absolutely don't negate anyone else's experience, but I've never encountered such behaviour from anyone. In fact most people were either disinterested or showed appreciation for skill and effort even if it wasn't their cup of tea. I've never felt shame for doing the hobby. Quite the opposite, in the world where hobby for millions means sitting on a couch and watching someone else do sports ours is something you can be rightfully proud of.

@robertomacari501 Жыл бұрын
I can relate to the shame aspect of the hobby. It’s strange though… don’t get me wrong but as a kid when I got into it, Warhammer was seen as a bit of an alternative game. I never played because of this and was only interested in painting. You walked into a GW and were hounded by “nerdy” “awkward” staff who basically tried to push items on to you with a bit too much enthusiasm haha. Honestly I’d say most parents hated this so denied their children getting involved. This plus the high price barrier for many families meant GW was an easy target for “normies” or people who could not afford the hobby. Was never personally bullied myself as a kid because I was a “normy” in the sense that I was athletic, confident and usually a centre of attention in my friend group or captained my sports teams. Yet I myself remember the stigma around GW and the embarrassment of carrying a Warhammer bag or being seen with a white dwarf. It caused me to take a 10+ year hiatus with the odd sneaky white dwarf in between. Even to this day (27yrs old) I still get a sense of awkwardness carrying a Warhammer bag through town. As Warhammer has slowly become more mainstream though this is disappearing.

The shame comes from the fact that it's a perishable and indulgent pastime. However it's also relaxing, mentally stimulating, artistic and expressive. Other pastimes have some utilitarian use or carry a higher "market value" that convey higher social status. Gaming in general does not have the thousands of years of cultural heritage that hunting or athletics (for example) have so those activities are held in much higher esteem. Best advice one can give to fellow gamers is "don't devote your life to something you don't have the ability to make a living off of", which means, get yourself and your house in order and ensure your time is well invested in your work, your health and your family before you invest time into your gaming hobbies.

It’s so great seeing stories from others in the community. So many of us struggle with expressing what we love for fear of being shamed or ridiculed just for doing something we enjoy. It happened to me all through my childhood and I’m sure with so many others and it took me a while to be ok with sharing my love of all my hobbies and I still occasionally struggle with it. But it’s ok to be yourself! And the community has become so welcoming to people from all places. Thank you so much for sharing this!

The worst part is that a large part of that rejection takes place in our own brain. It is not so much the rejection by others that drives anxiety, but the fear of rejection. The moment you accept yourself, a burden is lifted and when you are confronted with those rare cases of rejection (most people are actually pretty cool) their insults cannot hurt you anymore.

Just a little message to Stephen Box. I went through the same thing as a kid and hid it from my family. I also used to have the ruck sack to hide my minatures. I stopped collecting when I was 12 as I just couldn't take how I was made to feel for loving Warhammer 40k. I went off and was working and had a family and living my life but last Christmas I found myself single and living on my own. I thought I need something to keep me busy of an evening and also after suffering badly with my mental health something therapeutic. I remember how much I loved Warhammer gaming and painting. So last Christmas I bought a white dwarf I spotted in a shop and bought the Leviathan box 😃 I've been a fan of yours since around that time. Your videos are very helpful and not only make me want to be a better painter but also Inspire me to run better tactics in my monthly games with friends. I hear this story again and again about young men and school where it doesn't click. A lot of men are hands on crafters, doers, builders, athletes and other types that need to be in a very different world growing up. When they are starved of that fulfillment it destroys your motivation. You always feel out of step and people make it even more obvious when you are in a class everyday. Glad to see a story of hitting that wall, then breaking through it to help others do the same. Love the Vanguard content and this was a great interview.

Dave gave the most brilliant gift I've seen a human give another human with that statement to make Stephen realize he's already living his goal and that everyone around him sees it. So much respect for both of you in the vulnerability you laid bare in this interview as well as for the communities you've both built around our hobby. Thank you. And, Happy Birthday, Stephen.

This video!!!!! What a great insight into Stephen’s background. Passionate and inspirational! One of the first videos I watched when I got back into the hobby 18 months ago was a Vanguard Tactics one, broke the game down amazingly without being patronising!! Keep doing what you’re doing Stephen!!

This hits home with so many of us. So many stories of bullying and feeling like you needed to hide the thing you loved, sometimes the only thing keeping you going. Top, top man for sharing this Stephen and also Dave and the whole MWG team. It needs to be talked about more.

What a great story and a powerful video. I think most of us can relate to feeling that shame a bit. There's certainly no shame in being a part of this amazing hobby

You all are so valuable members of this community, and stories of dealing withmental health, both within and outside the hobby are invaluable. As a person who has dealt with mental health issues, and helped others, it is paramount to support your fellow hobbyists, you never know when someone giving you a compliment, or simply giving you a pat on the back physically or proverbial, will literally save their lives. So I want to say thank you, and everyone on your teams, that contribute so much to the hobby. You are all saints in my book

Stephen when you said the part about going into the gaming shop with the bag so people on the street wouldn't know what you bought etc, that really hit home with me. I got into Warhammer through LOTR too and I used to go to my local shop with a large carrier bag in my pocket so when I bought some models people didn't see me what I'd bought too. I guess we were doing the same thing at the same time for the same reasons just in different cities in the UK. Good luck with everything you do!

This is by far the best warranting video I’ve ever watched. I had the exact same feelings growing up and loving Warhammer and it wasn’t until I became comfortable with myself that I found I could be open about a hobby that I love! I still find I come across people who try to make fun but I own it, show them what I do and explain it to them and I often find that most people would actually love to try it themselves! Thanks to both of you for being so open and real!

Love this video…thank you so much. As a recent Warhammer gamer I can feel what you all feel. But despite what others think I’m going head first into this hobby and loving more and more of it. We need more videos like this to show other Warhammer gamers the benefits of this hobby for mental health

I absolutely love seeing how, us wargamers, hobbyists, nerds and 40k fans, all come together as a community, supporting each other and the hobby we all love. It's incredible to see how far people come, with personal stories and experiences that they don't forget. I personally love seeing us fans, enjoy the hobby so much that it inspires us to become better and support each other. A touching video, with amazing channels and amazing guys talking about their experiences

I'm happy that Alex (52 Miniatures) made me aware of your channel, because it's truly something special. I don't watch all of the battle reports, but these videos are what really make your channel stand out for me. You're such a positive force of energy in the community. As someone in my early 40's who still struggles with talking about my hobbies because of fear of embarrassment and judgement, it really hits home. I have made an effort lately, and will casually make comments about painting and gaming though. Small steps! Thank you for being you, and doing what you do!

The community around this hobby is truly amazing and i've never come across anything like it before. I also left the hobby as a teenager beacuse i was ashamed of it. And now having rediscovered it as an adult, it's like i have rediscovered a key part of myself i didnt realise i had lost. You feel so connected to each and everyone in the hobby and its the amazing content creators like Stephen and Dave that make his happen. I can be sat alone, but watching one of their videos i feel like I am in a room among friends. Despite being in a small hobby group of just a few people you feel part of somethig much bigger and so special. Keep up the great work!

Literally the same experience for me. As a teenager, playing Lord of the Rings, I used to walk to my local GW which was a trek to say the least. In order to avoid people seeing my black GW model case I used to put the entire case in a Sainsburys shopping bag. Early 2000's was rough.

Hi guys, love to see this coming up and being spoken about, the more we do, the better it is for all! I have always loved wargaming and have had friendships built from it. Whether it has been ignorance or arrogance, I haven't felt the pain of this harassment as badly, one of the lucky ones I guess. The problem I am now having that due to sight loss, I have lost these communities and really struggle to play and enjoy the games. Going from a lucky one to an unlucky one has been hard, but I know as well as the dark side of persecution, there is also the light side of great communities that build great friendships through this hobby! It is one I am deeply missing! Keep wargaming!!!

Dave is a treasure to the community. As someone struggling with mental health issues, it feels good to see someone as well regarded as Dave put focus on it. Haven't watched Vanguard Tactics, but the story of bullying for liking something that's considered "nerdy" really hit home with me. Thank you to the both of you!
