I'm coming back to openttd after years of playing Factorio. Watching these overflow tutorials makes me wish Factorio also had a TARDIS-like building that could fit an infinite amount of waiting trains!

at this point OpenTTD is less of a game about moving things and making money, and more like a train and track based programming language not saying that's worse in any capacity tho

Great video, keep them coming. I have seen overflow stations using timers, but for the life of me I cannot figure out timers... If timers are not on your list of videos it would be greatly appreciated
@LugnutsK5 жыл бұрын
Tiaan Hendriks I’ll definitely do some videos on logic circuits including timers. Personally I’ve never used timers on my overflows. The ABR overflows 2 article has info on it blog.openttdcoop.org/2010/11/07/advanced-building-revue-08-overflows-ii/ but I suspect that’s where you originally saw them
@Giekeme5 жыл бұрын
I build the exact same setup as you had at 7:53 but for some reason the trains refuse to go into the overflow. The entry signal is green because the combo signal at the overflow is green, but then they just stack up on one of the red signals going to the waiting bays. I am using the little Y at the end of overflow bay. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Suggestions?
@LugnutsK5 жыл бұрын
Tauntless Make sure the exit signals towards the station are two-way and also make sure you set yapf.rail_firstred_twoway_eol 1. If that isn’t the issue I need a screenshot or save file to help debug (Edit: fix typo)

@@LugnutsK Ah yes, the "set yapf.rail_firstred_twoway_eol 1"... I forget about that one every time I reinstall the game... Damn you for making me install the game again! :P Just for anyone reading this in the future: the command is entered in the command console opened with "~"

@lugnutsk at 4:49, what exactly is going on there, you put a signal down but don't say what kind it is. I don't understand when a priority signal ends. I don't know why these priority signals are so damn hard to understand. Nowhere does it ever explain why you need the un traversable track with backward-looking signals and how far backwards they look. Does it look until there is an exit even if there are blocks in between?
@Kaebuki4 ай бұрын
Try watching their priority merger tutorial video, it may help.

My trains refuse to enter the reverser, it is a bit difficult to explain so please look at 5:44 for this. You can see in at the timestamp how leading to the station, the two exit signals, are red and the one exit signal leading to the reverser is green, and how due to the green exit signal the entry to that block (before the three exit signals) is green as well -- the trains therefore can enter that block, however in my case, the trains entering that block don't enter the green exit signal leading to the reverser, but instead que before the red exit signal leading to the station. I have never seen a train que before a red exit signal before, this is an issue totally new to me so I have not a clue on how to fix it or why it is that it works for you.
@DaFreak860 Жыл бұрын
Ok, nvm, I am a moron, I have now placed two way exit signals at my station and now they want to enter the reverser, while I have no understanding why it works with a two exit signal, but it does, and I am still at the copy and paste stage of the game when it comes to learning this, so this is fine, but if you could explain in greater detail, that'd be great.
@nirasa5 жыл бұрын
You explained it well. thx
@sonaruo3 жыл бұрын
well the way i pass the problem is by making more tracks on the train station usually around 8-10 lanes are enough to handle huge number of trains and a single 2 lines entering existing the station where i prioritize at which lane the trains will try to move in which gives a huge help trains entering stations and entering to not block each other

Played this game since that horrible dodgy click mouse, that felt like grabbing a roofing tile.. Only discovered this FIRS mode a couple months ago. It's hard to build these mega hubs, and keep track on every junction. Let alone organise the station inlets. But a question that can work on either grf setting; What I find really hard to perfect is the signals.. where is smart to place, and where is it not useful even though it seems logical? To make sure you don't clog f.ex.. There is a main line station, that is fed by a sub station close by. Is it easier to make a bigger station, with more lines in (space can sometimes be limited for mega stations), but make the sub station route longer? Or like I did, connect it to the main line, as well as possible, to accommodate different goods but at the risk of slowing down the main line..? Sorry think that might be two questions. Thanks for the friendly guides. They are really good... That FIRS setting is a really great idea, and makes the game much more complex. Any starter tips on good secure business?

With this overflow, the different use of signals, and the positions is very demanding.. wish you could slow the tempo down by 1,5x. I do get the priority thing, but to link it with all those combo signals.. phew

Does this still work with the latest version of OpenTTD ? I have "set yapf.rail_firstred_twoway_eol 1" but the trains just queue in front of the station while the exit signal of the overflow is green. Thanks if you could get back to me on this as I'm super confused as to why it doesn't work

Would it still be wise to build a full-blown overflow system at a strictly drop off industry, specifically power plants, or is there another way you recommend handling high train loads at those stations?

AldarisFenrir NUTS trainset is my top choice, has different train classes that add a lot of variety. (eGRVTS or road hog for RVs, AV8 aircraft, and Fish is ships - the other vehicle types, but I mainly stick to trains) Then I always have ISR (industrial station renewal) for eye candy stations. Then later if you want a challenge the FIRS or YETI are custom industry sets that add some interesting and tricky mechanics.
