I'm very impressed with the increase of Erin's strength. I did a binge watch from the beginning and she was barely able handle one sheet of plywood, as things progressed she could grab one and heave one to Josh standing on the loft. Then came the sheetrock where she could handle one without a struggle. Now watching her easily manhandle a Tesla battery without sight of any struggle. I wish you both and your children a very Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous New Year!!

I started living totally off grid back in 2000, can you imagine how technology has changed since then, I have not ever ventured into the lithium battery usage yet as I have an endless supply of lead acid batteries, old tech yup, but reliable and free. I have a few friends that work in the forklift industry and I am able to get all of the used forklift batteries I can use. At present I now have 16, need a skidsteer just to lift one of those, theses batteries are exchanged out from forklifts after so many charge cycles and are usually disposed of, I rescue as many as I need, I have not had a system failure as of yet, I use two different charge controllers and two different inverters, redundancy so to speak, if one system goes down, I still have the other system, proper maintenance and maintaining a full charge is the key here, I usually dysulfate each system separately about once every two month, depending on charge cycles. I have replaced a few batteries since I started, but they usually last 6 to 7 years depending on condition when I get them and maintenance, Batteries like to be fully charged. Always best to over size your system, less headaches, and when you need power, well you got it, Erin and Josh, your sytem looks awesome, one thing about lithium, those batteries cannot handle the cold like agm or lead acid can, I do not heat the solar shed either, today's temp is -26 C or - 14.8 F for my friends below the 49th, I have never froze a battery yet, love you both, keep the family safe always, 👍👌❤🇨🇦
@mogelzz
@mogelzz 4 жыл бұрын
Important that fully charged thing is ONLY true for "the oldschool" batteries Lead acid and so on. With lithium in all varients Storring the batery compleatly full or empty is the worst. same gose for temperature they dont like it to cold / to hot. the cycel on them dosent realy plays a big rule in the live time. (30%) total capacity loss. = Dead bettery in the industry. The best way to kill a lithium cell is to keep it fully charged in a 30+°C room.
@pocketchange1951
@pocketchange1951 4 жыл бұрын
@@mogelzz I fully agree with you on every point, the industrial forklift batteries was the easiest and cheapest method, like you said lithium doesn't like cold, I also have and use 2 x 400 Silentwind generators for those days that maybe totally cloudy, but I have enough reserve battery storage to last me over a 7 to 10 dy period without giving up to much, the wind gens are just a safety measure and we always have wind no matter what. When Josh raised his solar array off the ground and put them on the stand,I applauded, too many people leave them too close to the ground and stray cattle and such like to use them as scratching posts, during the spring to fall months, I leave my panels at a 52 degree angle ( my lattitude) and during the winter months a little steeper because of the angle of the sun is so low. Around 60 degrees from November to end of March, April. I have had a battery freeze yet, cross fingers, if I lived in a warmer climate I would probably try lithium, but I may die first, but these batteries are free, so I use them. This last fall I found some more panels that the oil rigs had used and were auctioned off, I paid $50 per panel and they were 420 watt mono panels, so now I guess I am up to a little more than 6.7 kilowatts of solar 16 x 420. Initially it would have cost me over $15,000 just to have the power trenches to a meter, nope, my whole system never cost me half of that, so I will live like this.

You should connect your battery bank output leads from opposite ends of the bank. Positive on one End, Negative on the other end. The way you have it connected with both positive and negative on the same end results in that leading battery taking most of the load, both discharging and recharging. You are using large interconnects but each battery in your bank is seeing a different voltage and load. The first battery has to discharge a little before the second battery will discharge and the third battery only operates when the first two are discharged a little. This means that when you recharge the first battery has to overcharge before the third battery reaches full charge.

It's old school going off grid because many companies who supply the systems that make it possible come from a background where being in the middle of nowhere is just another day. Indeed many started making similar gear for the military/camping industry and the they went from the Kerosene Lamp to the LED and did the learning curve for those that followed when it comes to still being plugged in but not paying a utility to do it.

The one question I have wanted to ask most off grid homesteders is about adding wind turbines as a secondary source of power. During the low light times of the year and during the rainy season there is usually a fair bit of wind to run a mid-size turbine.

I like to go back and watch a series like this from the beginning and just watched the polar vortex video from Feb. Erin(Aron?) mentioned Josh's bulging disc and it clicked why Erin takes on way more physical tasks than you would expect and Josh gets razzed about in the comments. Suffering from a spinal cord injury thanks to a degenerating spine with probably a dozen bulging discs from the neck down I can tell you Erin that Josh appreciates you more than you could ever realize. It would have been easier to hire a helper to try and take some of the load off and let you reduce the amount of effort you put in on top of homeschooling the kids and making Peruvian Chicken but you stepped up helped him take better care of his back. At the end of the day, Erin has learned a lot about construction and Josh has learned how much she really does love him. Kudos to you both. Now I'm hopping back to February.

I’m floating most of time because I only need 3 -5 hours of sunshine to fully charge my system .. I think these are the absolute best batteries out there today

Imo you can, no sense in spending a billion to protect something that costs $5 and 10min to replace. That's obvious an extreme example and doesn't necessarily hold true for them. But $5k for 21kW vs $9k for 12kW is a massive hunk of money.

@@thelyingscotsman7993 Don't really see how this is relevant. They made this choice largely out of convenience and to protect their investment in the power house. The power house burning down due to thermal runaway is slim to none and doesn't endanger their kids anymore than a possible lightning strike.

I had the same thought when I watched the video. Making this change would make each battery have the same terminal voltage when charging or under load. Battery life should be a little bit longer.
@diyhouse
@diyhouse 4 жыл бұрын
Not necessary for load sharing,. as provided the correct gauge wire has been used in the 1st place, any voltage differences across the battery terminals will be negligible. ie mV... more important is the torquing up of the connections and making sure they are all clean with plenty of surface area to the bolts and studs.

If you look up the required wiring for SimpliPhi batteries, they require that positive and negative wires go to a shared bus.
@edwindewit8349
@edwindewit8349 4 жыл бұрын
@@diyhouse Yes, the voltage differences are in the mV range but you have to look at every possible resistance. Internal battery resistance is in the mOhm range and so are each lug contact. With Lithium you have to think symmetrical. I would even have same length battery leads going to a short piece of heavy copper buss bar and go to the inverter and charger from there. I believe SimplyPhi even recommends this if memory serves me right.

Operating at high voltages provides significantly higher efficiency. The first step in the inverter is to boost the 48V input to over 300V. This step is eliminated in some inverters that can accept high battery voltages. Saving about 5% of the output inverter power.

The one pro you forgot is these are new batteries so you know how long they will last where as the Tesla batteries were second hand and you don't know how long they would last. Good choice I have been looking at the Battle Born 24 volt batteries also but the ones you bought seem to be getting popular also.

So I have to say upfront, I am in the learning stages of solar PV systems. My question is on the batteries. The jumpers are stranded, my question is would a solid copper buss bars be more efficient? I worked in low voltage and the connections, the manufacturers wanted as less dissimilar metals as possible. I didn’t know if I’m the high voltage game I’d it mattered. I also noticed you didn’t use a conductive paste at the connection points. I’m not sure if that is an issue as well? I just don’t know that’s the reason for the long winded question. Your videos I love love love. So much I have learned. You kids have a legacy long after you both are gone. It’s a testimonial of love. Love for one another (to work so close together) and a love of family to give them something better and love of wife to be her provider. Big props you guys big props!

n3qdz I had the same questions!!! I KNOW with plumbing, any time you mix dissimilar metals, there WILL BE Galvanic Corrosion! On Electric connections when there is high Humidity there can be corrosion in the connection when dissimilar metals are mixed. I know there are pastes which are non-conductive that can be applied to all of the pieces which many find too messy to deal with and most ppl accept that the rubber boot will reduce the amount of humidity in the connection. I myself would use the non-conductive paste and the rubber boot. Did you guys make the jumper cables?

Stranded is better due to "skin-effect". With high current, the current flows through the wire mode near the surface, then through the core. So with stranded you have more surface then with solid and your copper wires can be thinner (and are easier to handle).

Guust Skin effect is a function of frequency of AC current, not magnitude of current. With batteries the current is DC and skin effect is not a factor.

@@Guust_Flater Not really. Skin-effect applies to high-frequency currents only. Not applicable for DC bus-bar of a solar system.
