$17k is a steal for that 4Runner. He has way more money in it, trust me. I've had two Tacomas and two 4Runners. They cost way more to build than that.

Its the love of the truck, whatever you put into the truck you cant get it back, when you sell other dont want what you build and u will take a hit on price that you put in, the lesson here is dont put too much money into ur car because nobody would want your build and they wont pay for it either.

Hey man my name is Greg,I’ve watched most of these 4-runner videos you’ve posted during your travels and love the content! It’s inspired me to do something similar with my 3rd gen..Your calm demeanor in situations and extensive knowledge of your vehicle really is something to be admired..your photography is also amazing! Some of the best of 3rd gen photos I’ve seen in the wild..much respect
@hikerxplore
@hikerxplore Жыл бұрын
Thank you Greg! Means a lot. I spent some years building my 4Runner personally in my garage or driveway so I was familiar with every aspect of it. Testing abilities of the equipment before the big trip was something I did a lot, and I swapped out gear numerous times. Similar to my photography, just working on hobbies for years and getting better at what you do. Appreciate the words, I hope your project goes well, just remember you don’t have to over build it to enjoy it! Use what you have and adapt as you go.

@@hikerxplore thanks for taking the time to respond back! I appreciate the advice and im absolutely following it,like you said in the video build the vehicle for a specific purpose..one thing im glad you said was you wish you kept weight down by not adding the bumpers and that’s something i was on the fence about..i dont need the armor since i wont be bashing up it against things..I plan to travel longer distances more then be in rougher terrain so the bumpers would probably have more negative affect then benefit..aesthetically they look great but wont be necessary for me..are your back in the states?
@hikerxplore
@hikerxplore Жыл бұрын
@@scrambledgreg3834 Yeah the weight of the bumpers were something I always battled with, I re geared, and was going to supercharge or v8 swap eventually. The owner of it now has actually supercharged it currently, and it’s a huge difference! But if you keep the weight down you will be fine with what you have, even the stock gear ratio can handle a lot with the transmission ratios too. I am currently back in Alaska for the US winter, then who knows after that.

I've got a '97 limited, in white. And I want to build mine just like this, with just a LT suspension setup instead. But the accessories, the bumpers, tire mount/swing, I need. I have the roof rack and light bar, but I want to take off the front bumper due to it being rebuilt from a front end collision. Body man did a poor job on reassembly, so it has loose/missing brackets. Great build, though, brother ✊🏾 located in South Carolina

That things pretty nice! Got a 98 SR5 5 speed, looking for a rear bumper with the swingout spare. Yours didn't look like it has a tag light? The plate location/lighting seems to be the issue I'm finding with them. I like those baja front fenders. Should'a painted that mirror at the same time. lol That'd drive me nuts.

Definitely no tag light, but wouldn’t have been impossible to wire lights out the swing arm to the location but never did that. I actually got so used to the silver mirror that I forgot about it when I painted the hood and fenders haha most people didn’t even notice it with all the other cool stuff to look at. Thanks!

All that work and left the stock upper UCA’s on ? SPC would have helped with your clearance with those meats on there. Also good call on re gearing. That’s a ton of weight on that thing without doing that. She would be a dog otherwise. Really nice truck and you did a nice job. Like to see these kind of prices being considered for these trucks. I’ve owned my 3rd gen for 22 years and modded out as well. They are definitely becoming classics and whoever buys it will have a heck of a rig.
@hikerxplore
@hikerxplore 2 жыл бұрын
As I said in the video, no need in my eyes to change out OEM items over the years as long as they worked and everything dialed in on the alignment, this set up was simple and got the job done for my needs at the time. Spending hundreds or thousands of bucks on unnecessary odds and ends, using the money to actually travel instead seemed like the most viable option to me. We could go on for hours about different variables and what someone else would do, but the new owner can make those decisions now. Appreciate the words, 5 years building it was fun and I spent time using it and daily drove it for a lot of those years, definitely one of the nicer ones out there after I got done rebuilding it haha.

Bet you got stormed in the comment section for people wanting to buy it. I just Spent $43000 on my Toyota Sequoia first gen. Is total chaos long travel king shocks all the way around. Recovery bumpers from coastal off road weld together kits and sliders. Front and rear Etton lockers. 488 gears. And a whole lot of other stuff prerunner front fenders. Too much to list. About 30000 in parts 13000 in labor. They were expensive $175 an hour but they know what they're doing. And I know if I sold it it would go for around 25 or less. KC lights Switch pro light switch panel. I could go on and on anyway that's a nice 4runner... Oh yeah I have 35" by 12.5 by 17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on Method Beadlock technology wheels.

I went through 2 sets even with a diff drop kit within 3 years. I swapped to these specifically made for lifted vehicles and after a year they still looked brand new with no boots tearing or looking warn. Worth the money if you’re lifted 3 inches or higher, and just know that your differential will probably blow up before these axles do..

How much did this truck cost and to do all the mods to it ? Also do you have the website where you bought your motor from i want to do a build like this possibly.
@hikerxplore
@hikerxplore Жыл бұрын
Great questions, I don’t have a specific website to find the JDM motor, I actually just ordered it off EBay from a JDM importer out of Florida. If you could find a low mileage USDM motor it would be a lot less of a hassle, mine already being a 3.4 was a pain due to having to swap literally everything from the US motor to the JDM motor including timing sensors. I only paid $1500 bucks for the stock 4Runner at a junkyard I worked for, it had a transmission shift issue, ended up just being loose wires. And then over the 6 years I had it, swapped out different parts and tires, numerous other things which makes it hard to give you estimated total build costs. With todays market you’d be hard pressed to find a reasonable priced 3rd Generation runner that doesn’t need every bolt turned and part fixed. I would expect to invest 20-30k maybe more, to have one like mine.. especially if you want decent ride quality, parts, and gears/lockers with all the overland features. I’d recommend just finding one already built and someone needs it gone because their moving or whatever, save yourself all the build times and waiting months for parts. Just my 2 cents.

I had this 4runner for a lot of years and built it for my needs at that time, it’s been sold now for a couple years so it’s old news. I don’t live in the states full time anymore and travel, so yes a appreciation value is there for this specific vehicle, if I pay for storage for years, or sell it to someone who will take care of it and continue to build what I started.. which is what happened, the new owner loves it and has taken it to the next level, I can’t speak towards other owners but I don’t regret my decision.

I've also had a question about regearing. So if I run 35s and re gear and than let's say I end up going back to smaller tires would that effect anything?
@hikerxplore
@hikerxplore 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah so if you decided to go with smaller tires after re gear at some point, you’ll have a very torque inspired feeling vehicle however at high speeds on the highway the engine will be revving very high, so it’s recommended to go back to higher or factory gears if you’re going backwards in size tires. Here’s a link that’s good for all! www.roundforge.com/articles/410-456-488-529-what-gears-should-you-get-your-toyota/
