Watching this series make me think that the Hilux and Fortuner we build here in SA are tougher than the American build Toyotas plus the Japanese build Land Cruisers which are very tough for our conditions just looking at the troubles you encounter. Just an observation but you guys put a top notch series together, I really like it and always looking forward to your next episode

I can’t comment on the engineering on these trucks, however parts break etc after thousands of km on corrugated roads with heavy trucks. For me the the bigger issue is the pitfall of using vehicles that are not sold in the region and the lack of spares and local knowledge. Would be the same if I took my 70 series to USA where they have never been sold.

I've been thinking the same since I saw the troubles that they were having with the vehicles in Botswana. I have watched a lot of Overlanding vehicles with SA guys and I haven't seen so many mechanical issues.

When I travelled Australia as a kid with my Dad, he always got under the vehicle at the end of each day to check the condition of the vehicle and trailer and even running a spanner around nuts and bolts for tightness. This is something I continue to do, though I lack consistence when all is going well. I bet a lot was learn from this trip.

Torfi is in the house and it appears that the whole team has got its MOJO back. I was thinking Clay, that you were feeling the pressure a bit even though it was not justified but as the leader, you needed some additional support and Torfi has given you that. Great episode and well done for all your good deeds. I mentioned you guys needing locktight before but I think you need to take some guidance from the aero industry and start wire locking your bolts and nuts👍🏻 safe trip guys.

I so enjoy this. I did a similar 40 day 4x4 expedition in 2013. We had 4 x trucks each with a trailer etc. We went from the absolute South to North of Namibia and back down again. Only off-road all the way. So many memories! Things broken and fixed, nature, people and tribes. We also had a camera crew and satellite broadcasting vehicle. What an adventure! Nostalgic for me to watch. Wish I was there 🦾

So really enjoying the South Africa series as I have the others. I was wondering in anyone uses safety wire to prep rigs. Coming from an aircraft maintenance background, we used this extensively to keep nuts and screws from backing off. Also curious if the aftermarket accessories were originally installed with locktite and if so was it red or blue. I am hoping to begin my overland build in the next year, so always looking for ideas.

I have had a similar issue with my 5th gen 4runner. The frameside bolt for the panhard bar has fallen out several times over the life of the vehicle. I've been quite fortunate not to have had anything catastrophic happen because on 2 occasions, I was doing some pretty difficult offroading, 4x4 low locked type situations.. I constantly maintain my vehicle, which has definitely saved me from these situations going real bad, but also shows how quickly something can happen! Proper vehicle inspections and maintenance are key to making it through the trails and even just around town. Don't get complacent!

Excellent show.. well documented! The fin/tube that leaks the freon can be filled (about a cm) with JB weld or what you used, and then roll the fin few times to trap the glue inside the tube and it is a permanent fix. Not sure how the Taco passengers are handling heat and humid without the air con!

Such a great series so far, I particularly liked the little bit of more technical four wheeling and the challenge of fuel on the long run. I'm curious why you guys don't put some more distance between the vehicles on the super dusty roads to give the following vehicles some cleaner air? Are you trying to stay in a tighter group for security reasons?

Both for security reasons and filming! When cameras are off, we open the convoy up when we can to avoid dust intrusion and road debris.
