My “Overland” truck camping setup! A brief down and dirty look at how I set my truck up for camping and everyday use.
Supplies used
2- 2x6 57 inches
2- 4x8 sheets of OSB cut down to 28.5 inches wide by 69.5 inches long
All left over wood was used to make the drawer.
Drawer dimensions: 70 inch long x 22 inches wide x 6 inches tall
Outdoor carpet: www.lowes.com/...
Glue:amzn.to/3bXaXMA
Bed: amzn.to/2YlzfvD
Bedspread: amzn.to/2ydjJHy
Bed cover: amzn.to/3aYIN2F
I love the outdoors and making a camping setup that is always ready to go was super important to me, but I set want to make it so my truck can be used everyday for the everyday things you need your truck to do. I think this set up does just that. It isn't super fancy, but I managed to do this build for under $200 bucks the wood with the carpet was just under $100 bucks and the bed (Milliard 4 inch Full Tri-Fold Mattress) was around $100 dollars. It fits perfectly and offered a good nights sleep up off the ground. If you are into overlanding, camping, or just want to get outside more this is the perfect option.
Camper Shell is the LEER 100XR
Lift: Icon Stage 5
Tires: BFG Ko2 285 70r17
Wheels: Fuel Vector

Do you have a problem with water getting in the bed and wetting the platform ? Asking because I’m debating on wether or not to get a shell for my truck
@TrentMMoore
@TrentMMoore 2 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t had any problems. That is not to say you will not, the dealer I had install my shell told me the windoors are very prone to leaking so they may start leaking. The only place I have had water come in from is in between my tail gate and when opening my shell the back door. The tailgate issues is fixable you just have to purchase tailgate dust guards. The back door will allow water to drip in when opening it nothing have seen to fix that.

@@TrentMMoore probably isn’t anything to fix the problem when you open it. Thanks for the response and the tips . I was just more concerned about the wood getting wet and messed up . If it doesn’t get that wet in the back than it should be fine . Thanks for the reply

I can highly recommend affixing a thin laminate of some sort over the ridged section of the tailgate. Then you will have a smooth surface to work on, like for cooking! It is also easier on the knees when you climb inside and that area won’t collect dirt and dust. I used 1/8” (?) plywood affixed with industrial strength Velcro, so it comes off easily. Several coats of polyurethane varnish will protect it from rain and spills.
@laurareutter6928
@laurareutter6928 4 жыл бұрын
It could also be thicker material like 1/4” for a more durable surface.

I have been debating whether or not to switch out my 2004 Tacoma for something else. She still runs like a champ with over 210k miles but she is starting to need minor repairs/replacements, both functionally and aesthetically. But don't we all!! Haha. 😉 I do, however, anticipate more moderate repairs / replacements to come up sooner than later. All that being said, your video kinda validates why I should maintain her, keep her, and reclaim my truck! Thanks. I might finally be ready to go mobile, eventually, thanks to your instructional video!! 🤗 Eye on the price.

Awesome I am glad I was able to help. I like the 04 Tacoma’s, with a little TLC it would make a perfect camping rig. I found projects on my truck make me like it that much more. I plan on keeping my Tacoma for a long time I feel like Tacoma’s have this U shaped curve of desirability. When they first come out everyone wants the new one then the hype dies down and then in like 10-20 years people are searching for them again. Or at least that what I found for the last 2 Tacoma’s I sold. Anyways thanks for watching.

Most the time I am not to worried about it. The areas I camp I would normally be tent camping to I feel this is just as safe but with this camper you lock it from the outside and close it. You could also take vise grips to the rotating portion of the lock and secure it in place. I plan on doing an electronic lock in the future, seems like the best option.

If you are 6ft it is going to be tight. If you don’t build a platform like I have it will definitely feel like you have more room. If you are using it for occasional camping think of it like a tent, you don’t have a ton of room in a tent but it still works. They come in 2 bed lengths long (6ft) short (5 1/2ft I believe). You will just have to check that it is a long bed which seems to be less common. I have a 2018 TRD Offroad long bed.

Yes the are an add on. They are called windoors. The ones in the video are vented windoors. You will have to either order the shell from a LEER authorized dealer and ask them to build the shell with windoors on the shell or if you find a used shell for a cheap price you can buy the windoors from LEER and have them installed on that used shell. I did not do the second option because the price per window is $450 without installation and for that price it was worth it for me to buy the shell I wanted with all the options I wanted. Nice set up man! Im thinking about doing a similar set up for my tacoma as well for next spring and summer cuz I'll be doin a lot of solo camps and fishing trips. I got a question tho. Does your shell or canopy leak when it rains? I noticed mine leaks a bit at the top two corners and at the back where my light is. I'm hoping I can find a good way to plug up the leaks and hopefully it won't be too much of a problem for the wood n stuff.

@TrentMMoore
@TrentMMoore 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah positive it’s a 4” Millard mattress. For the money it is comfortable. It is hard because obviously everyone likes a different firmness of mattress. I would say this is on the more firm side. The platform or the mattress? The mattress is Millard Tri fold Mattress (link is in the video description) if you are interested in picking one up. It is 73 inches L x 52 inches W x 4 inches deep. The bed I am looking into purchasing is an Exped Double mattress, about 200 dollars more but it will shrink up in size. As far as the bed build I did a separate video on the build. @onlinebills9169

The setup is great. The massive mistake you've done is using materials that emit fumes of formaldehyde. 1) they glue they use to make your wood board, 2) the backing of your carpeting. Even in a constantly ventilated area, those chemical fumes would be present for at least 8 years.
@BrettEndres
@BrettEndres 2 жыл бұрын
What materials would you use for the same setup?
@onlinebills9169
@onlinebills9169 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrettEndres instead of plywood or anything that is "layered & glued together", I would use regular planks of wood. For "carpeting" I would use a layer or a wicker mat to cover the bed of the truck and on top of it, carpeting made of natural fibers. In worse case, a couple of layers of those thick old style wool or cotton blankets. None of these set ups need to look luxurious or made expensivelly. It's not about vanity or showing off to others, but practicality. But if I spend hours in there even just sleeping, I would definitely avoid surrounding myself with toxic funes. Same thing goes for stuff you have at home and especially in your bedroom.

Did you use a 4” or 6” Milliard tri-fold mattress ? How much space would I loose if I go with a 6” ? I have the same cap on my Tacoma.
@TrentMMoore
@TrentMMoore 4 жыл бұрын
I used the 4” tri-fold, I cannot comment to how much space you would lose using the 6 inch mattress but presumably another 2 inches. I have 23 inches from the top of the mattress to the top of the truck cap. Not sure if that is helpful but I went with the 4” because I figured I could always find a mattress topper later if I felt I needed more padding, but I couldn’t take it anyway if I didn’t have enough room.

Hey, I’m looking to start the same project on my Tacoma. I like how you have the 2x6’s running across the bed instead of one or more running lengthwise down the middle. Do you get any sag in the middle with this method? I’ve been going back and forth and this is by far the easiest way to do it. Thanks
@TrentMMoore
@TrentMMoore 3 жыл бұрын
Yes there is some minimal sag, not enough to cause any issues. I only notice it because I have a drawer that slides under the 2x6 cross beams. If you plan on building a drawer this helps to support any weight you might place in the platform over time. I love this setup and would take the minimal amount of sag over the cost/ effort of adding a support beam down the middle. Thanks for watching. If you want more info bust trentmmoore.co I did a write up with picture outlining in a little more detail. Or you can comment on here if you need any help. Thanks for watching! I'm working on the preliminary planning for a build like this in my gen 2 taco, my concern is there's not a ton of room between the platform and the ceiling of my camper shell based off my rough measurements. I'm 6 feet tall 185lbs, not small but not huge either. How has the sleeping space been for you? I've considered going roof top tent, but I'd rather save the money for now and work with what I got.
@TrentMMoore
@TrentMMoore 4 жыл бұрын
You are about the same size as me ( I am 5’ 11” 175lbs ) and me and my wife sleep in there comfortably. Most of the trips we are sleeping in the truck are about 3-5 days max, so it isn’t bad at all. That being said I have hit my head a few times waking up at night and forgetting where I was or trying to adjust and totally smacked my head. We are looking at getting some sort of standing tent that would attach to the side just to make changing and what not easier but over all for the money I think it is totally worth it. Shoot it is hard to get a good ground tent for the money spent to make this, provided you have the shell.
