As someone that snow-wheels in this area, and does volunteer recoveries of people stuck in the snow, I rarely use tire chains. Those conditions are questionable for tire chains. It's icy, so they might help. But he high-centered the vehicle, so chains might have made things worse. Tire chains do improve traction, but they also dig holes fast. In deep snow, digging holes fast just means you get high-centered even easier.

Done that, lol. When we lived in the outskirts of Chicago I used to love taking my wife’s Pathfinder 4X4 out on country roads after a big snow. I got stuck on a gravel road between two paved roads and this a guy in a big 4X4 saw me and came out to help, scoffed at my Pathfinder saying these Japanese 4WDs are lightweights in real off-road situations. Then got stuck himself. lol We were eventually rescued by a bunch of snowmobilers. Just found your great channel!

You can use a hi lift as a winch
@syncrology25210 ай бұрын
Just should definately use the extension for the highlift next time, not only for not scratching the van. But the way you used it could damage the jacking point, which also serves as the fixing point for the rear axle. I this area rust is a common problem and without the extension you only apply force to the outer part of the jacking point. If this area is weakend by rust, it can heavily deform the jacking point. So please take care of that beautiful car. I'm rebuilding a Syncro at the moment by myself. Greetings from Germany

Haha nah chains would’ve made this worse. For the most part in deep snow chains will just dig you down and get you stuck. You wanna float over the snow not dig into it.

@andrewsnow738610 ай бұрын
@@RileyMonthule Good for you! I've been wheeling alone for 40 years (started with my parent's 1962 VW Bus). I learned the hard way too -- I once dug mud with a dustpan. :) You will quickly learn what you need to keep yourself out of trouble. By the way, I don't know what you aired down to, but I bet it wasn't low enough. For deep snow, you really need to be at 10 psi or lower -- it can make a huge difference in heavy wet snow. To get out of soft sand, I once lowered my heavily loaded Syncro Westy to 7 psi (with stock size tires). With your slightly oversize tires and lighter van, you might be able to go as low as 5 psi, but it would be risky. Ten psi is safe (for slow travel in deep snow) on basically any car, SUV, or light truck. But you must have a way to reinflate the tires before you drive over 25 mph or so.

I do snow-wheeling in the Washington Cascades (and I have a Vanagon Syncro, but it's not what I usually snow-wheel with). If you want someone to drive with in the snow, let me know (I can provide references). And, no trip is a success unless you get stuck at least once. :)
