Stranded in a Lookout Tower by a Surprise Snowstorm. Mountain top rescue

I got called by a couple who was stranded in a mountain top lookout tower by a surprise snow that came a day early. They had planned to leave that morning before the snow came the following evening, but when they woke up they were greeted by around 18” of snow that their Subaru couldn’t get through. What they didn’t know was that down the mountain farther the snow was WAY worse and they were in a lot more serious of a situation than they thought.
When they called me, we decided that since there was no more snow coming that day or night, it would make sense to wait until the following day so that we had a full day to perform the rescue, and that allowed me to formulate a better plan. Since this was so far away from home, and was so deep into the wilderness, I didn’t want to try this one alone. So I called my buddy Adam with Remote Access Medical, and he brought along his medic Bryan to help out.
The following morning we took my American Track Truck @Jeep, and Adam’s @AmericanExpeditionVehicles Prospector up and
ran into FAR more snow than we were expecting. We ended up hitting about 4’ of snow at a very low elevation and all came to the conclusion that there was no way that car was getting out in one piece, so this was most likely turning into a people rescue mission, not a vehicle recovery. After an hour and a half of pushing through the snow, we finally made it to the top were we had a long conversation with the owners and they made the call to take the risk, and try to get the car out anyways.

It's a lot of people's dreams, but in reality everyone I've ever met would go insane after the first 3 months. Most people could never handle solitary confinement, no matter what they say. People in prison can survive days or weeks in solitary. Less than 1% can survive months or years in solitary, and even then, there is still plenty of human contact every few weeks. You have to be a true lone wolf to survive, and actually crazy to really enjoy the minimum 7 months of isolation. Cell service would be an extreme luxury where I live, but without solar panels a phone would be a worthless brick in the first few weeks. You would also need some basic knowledge in the local flora, because even if you could collect enough meat for the entire winter, you would likely die from scurvy. There are enough vitamins available even in winter (vitamin C is critical), but you would NEED to know every possible source, and collection, and prep methods. My dad and I did a week with no food, no guns, and only a fishing pole. The lakes we lived near were an easy luxury, but in November the ice fishing was awful. We caught 3 small trout after about 70 hours of ice fishing. Spruce tea became a staple, and while tasty at first, it was miserable by day 5. It gave us a few mandatory nutrients but after 7-8 months of winter it would have been intolerable. My slingshot bagged us a porcupine, and that was a huge morale booster. It tasted awful but I've been told that it can taste great if prepared properly. Something I learned on that trip was that salt is infinitely more valuable than a hatchet. Unfortunately halite is impossible to find in winter, so a large solid brick of salt would be essential for any extended trip. (I've never seen nor heard of a "survivalist" talking about how important salt is.) If we had a gun and it was legal to do so, we could easily have had a few elk and a moose; fine for protein, calories and basic nutrients for the winter, but still deadly without other options.

It sure made quick work of the task at hand. Could you have looped the tow rope from your hitch, around and under your axle, then hook up to the car? That would have kept the tow rope much lower, wouldn't it?

A lot of people suggest a snowplow, but there’s very good reason we don’t use one. Number one is that there is no way in hell any normal sized vehicle is pushing through that deep of snow with a plow. Keep in mind that there was another foot to foot and a half of snow under how far we were sinking down in that intro clip. Notice that the highway departments all over the country use full size dump trucks loaded with weight in the back to plow through up to a couple feet of FRESH snow, and then have to switch to snowblowers when it gets any deeper than that. It’s simply not feasible/possible to plow roads all over the forests, especially once we get a little later into the season and the snow hardens up. The other reason is that we are not the only ones who use these roads and trails. These are all winter recreation areas used by off readers, snowmobilers, skiers, and snow shoers. The forest service would never allow us to destroy their winter recreation areas to save someone’s vehicle. This particular road we were on is one of those areas that closes to wheeled vehicles in less than two weeks and becomes a very popular snowmobile trail for the rest of the season. Removing all the snow from a major snowmobile trail right before it opens is simply NOT an option, even if it was possible to do so. Long story short, plow blades are cheap and if they actually worked for the type of recoveries I do, I would already have one.

I wasn't so much thinking of a real plow, just something triangular on the front since your front grill seemed to be pushing snow at times anyway, where the bottom wouldn't go below your bumper/frame but would help keeping the snow from building up on the front of the vehicle. That's just the engineer in me trying to find solutions to every minor issue.

The ad revenue and advertising for his company make up for it. KZbin isn't like the glory days, but with 125k subscribers, I'm sure his ad revenue just from the channel, and not even counting actual towing revenue, fully pays for all his fuel and equipment and overhead, and insurance. So the hundreds of dollars daily for towing goes right in his pocket. He seems nice. But he's not doing this for free. Nor should he. 😂

@@sasquatchrosefarts9131 actually, the subscriber number has absolutely ZERO relationship to how much KZbin pays. My pay is based on video view numbers, and watch time hours. I actually lose money on the vast majority of these videos, and then every so often one will do good enough to make up for the losses. Some months that will happen a few times, some months it doesn’t happen at all. As a matter of fact, I haven’t had a profitable month since May. The towing company doesn’t make any money. KZbin completely killed the towing business and it’s done a grand total of 5 paying jobs this year. That’s actually why I bought the big truck and am hesitant to film most of the jobs I do with it. I needed something that would provide a consistent profitable income without relying on KZbin, because KZbin is definitely not paying the bills. Between the jobs and KZbin, I put in far more hours now, and bring in less money, than I did when it was just me and my one little truck going to work every day.

Years ago (maybe 35) a couple of older guys got caught in an early snow at high elevation during deer season. They were many days over due and search and rescue were looking for them for days. Chopper finally spotted them and air lifted them out. Their truck with camper stayed there till spring thaw. The guys were none the worse for wear, food, or water when rescued. They had begun to ration their meals though. Said they could hear CB radio traffic talking about them and searching for them but couldn't reach them with their radio. A lesson or two learned. Winter weather is unforgiving of mistakes. Been there seen and done that.

I think the reason these and Matt’s videos are so good is because there’s a story arc every time. You start with a problem, begin perpetration and the journey there, you go through struggles and challenging situations, and usually, end up coming away victorious.

That's a really good observation. Also, the manufactured drama in so much of what is on actual TV these days is like a caricature of real life. The writers of those shows (even the "reality" shows) make it so extreme that it is readily noticeable and very unrealistic. These KZbin videos are just people doing their jobs and you get the same arc, but the level of drama is so much more authentic. If this was a television show the tracked jeep would have thrown a track, or the Ram would have gotten stuck and needed pulled out. Maybe one of the campers would be suffering from a medical emergency. Here they we just stuck, which is still a very life threatening situation. There was a tough choice to make about leaving the car or not. And, like you observed, we have a Hollywood ending.

the weather in the cascades is very unpredictable no matter where you are, north or south. it's a nasty mountain range for weather... one time i was in the north cascades during august, beautiful 75-degree day. in the time span of 90 minutes, it went from sunny 75 degrees to overcast 28 degrees, 25mph wind with snow, then back to sunny 75 degrees. no warning, nothing like that in the forecast.

Same thing happened to me once. was sitting at 11,500ft in a rental that took 6 months to book and then it dumped 18" of snow overnight with drifts hitting 3ft. The next day I had a rescue company pull my car down the mountain. I wish they had a youtube channel it was a lot of fun.

Best video yet. That was certainly an amazing trip for all concerned. Having the medic guys along was a very good idea, given the conditions experienced. Many years ago a few friends and I were riding our dirt bikes up in the mountains in the spring. We were east of Hagelstien Park. (Next to Klamath Lake) The snow was still frozen, and we could go anywhere. We went for miles up to a look-out. We went up and ate our lunch admiring the awesome view. We decided to head back, fired up the bikes and went about a foot, and went in clear to the frame. We tried to pack a trail to get some speed up, but it was no use. We were about 9 miles from bare roads, and 30 miles from the trucks. So we just had to build a fire and wait until it froze up again, (we hoped), and then ride out. By about 12:AM, it had frozen up enough that we could go. We did need to keep our speed up, but we did make it out. Only one of us had lights (me), so I was in the lead, and I was also the one that found all of the soft spots. LOL This was in the early 70s. The wives were less than pleased, but were happy that we at least made it out.

It was great at the end when Casey figured out how a Subaru made it up to the tower. The couple being rescued were pretty cool. He was obviously down for an adventure--didn't get to have it on skis, so he bolted out of there in his newly freed Subaru to go make an adventure out of his 3.5 hour ride home. Nice video as always. Lookout towers are pretty cool and the drone shot confirmed the magnificant places they are at! I really enjoyed this adventure. The suspense, friend's interaction and humor, Nate's commentary and McGyvering, the views, the icicles, the epic snow and tracks plowing through it. Seeing the rescuers cars struggle, and then a Subaru comfortably sliding behind them was pretty funny. They are so lucky to get out this way! Good to hear that (part of) the Red Cherokee is still saving other people's day.

When they were making that trip up there through that untouched snow, it reminded me of that scene from the movie, The Shining where that cook took a Snowcat and went up to try to rescue the little boy and his mother from the Overlook Hotel. I'm sitting here in my warm house in Nashville and it's over 50 degrees OUTSIDE plus I even have a little space heater at my feet in addition to the central heat but watching that, I still feel like I'm freezing!

Well done, Casey. I was glad to see the guy give some cash for the rescue. You don't charge and sometimes their poor judgment gets them in a bad situation or just having a bad day and they should offer something. You offered it to your buddy to cover his fuel for the assistance was a "pure gentleman". Nate is a character. You def need the "uncut" versions, we are missing the funnier parts.

Great video!!! Keeping your cool in such a dicey situation was great. Loved the winter office. You can have it. I had my fill of snow by the time I was 18. I grew up in Northern Iowa where winter snows often came in November and didn't leave till April. I love the winter pictures, just not being in them.

This is my first time seeing anything as what you did for that person way up there in deep snow . I'm glad you guys pulled them out of the tower and helped them to get back onto the road home . You guys are amazing . Thats a cool track jeep .
