This is a great video with a simple reminder. If you are looking into buying a bunch of gear so you can go overlanding but you don't enjoy overlanding with what you have now, you may just be wasting your money.

Yeah, just get a cooler, a tent, a sleeping bag (or in the summer some blankets may do), and a basic kitchen kit (stove/pots) and go somewhere. Grow your 'kit'/'rig' naturally, as experience tells you what to upgrade/improve/etc. You don't have to look good on instagram or youtube to enjoy camping. And don't compare yourself to people who do this for a living. Also, if you buy what they got, expect them to sell it in 1-2 years, because then they need to move onto something else to keep getting the views.

Ehh not necessarily. I never liked camping before, but I realized why. We always had crap supplies and ate crap food. When you have a skottle and a Dutch oven you can cook literally anything in the middle of nowhere. Lasagna, stir fry, street tacos, popcorn. You get the idea. When you have a fridge/freezer and can enjoy an ice cream with your kids, in the summer, in the forest that’s a way better experience than using an ice chest. Sure you CAN camp with a ground tent, a blanket, and a styrofoam ice chest. But when you elevate your stuff the entire experience becomes enjoyable. Especially for the wife and kids.

Cool. I plan on building out my Cherokee into a really clean low dollar car camper.. been watching lots of these videos to get a feel for what I want.

I have 2 large storage boxes mounted on the roof rack of my XJ, all the camping gear goes in one and all my recovery gear goes in the other and just like you, my air mattress goes in the back. My son and I have camped all over Tasmania in it and I will never sell her!

Worse part about Cherokee camping is if you are 6ft or taller. Unless you have the 2 door seat that fold forward in your 4 door. But you can disable your rear hatch lights and use a SUV hatch tent to give more room

“In my 2000 Cherokee, a nice inexpensive vehicle.” Me looking at XJ prices on Craigslist as of 12/31/2021 and seeing 5 for sale at $10,400 $10,000 $14,000 $9,800 and $8,000. Guess we have different views of inexpensive lol.

Lol, ya that’s true. They’ve really gone up, but I’ve had it since College. It was a lot cheaper back then.

@@ScenicCityAdventures oh I bet. I got a ‘99 XJ from a coworker for $800 and even better a ‘98 TJ from a family member for $2500. They are both pretty fun.

Where do you live that they are selling for $8-$14k? If that's what they are going for they better look like they are brand new.

@@the_bencredible I bought my rust and dent free XJ for far less than that, seriously 99% rust free. It lived the majority of it's life in Bend Oregon and I live just outside of Portland. I constantly have people offering to buy it but I only paid $1,200 then he gave me new Thule 300 roof bars. Yes I know I got super lucky but I'm never selling this thing. Look for a Jeep in Oregon, it's worth the drive.

Nice , what do u have a 2” lift ? What size tires . ? I have a 96 xj , I m replacing a lot of the parts on and around the engine , all the hoses, all the steering components, the coolant system ,I didn’t charge the radiator and fan yet ,thanks for sharing

I went with a Rusty’s Advanced lift and 33 inch tires. It’s been a great combo. Still comfortable to cruise down the Hwy at 80, but plenty of flex for most trails. Nice! I had to do a new thermostat and a lot of the rubber hoses when I first got mine. Other than that, it’s been solid.
