In this video we hit the trails to have some fun and see how the ARB front air locker compares to the Toyota traction control system (A-TRAC, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control). We also discuss whether it is better to first install a front locker or a rear locker. Please note that this was filmed on designated OHV trails. Tread lightly !

The biggest problem with A-TRAC is that it is really designed to help you get going after you have lost momentum. So, it will help get you going when you have come to a dead stop due to losing traction. It will help a little when you are in motion but only when you are going very slow, 1 mph to 4 mph. A locked diff will always put torque to the ground even when you are underway. So, it keeps you from losing traction so you can avoid coming to a dead stop. Double lockers is a very capable off road platform.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
Good points. The MTS system is designed to be more active but it is limited to 7 mph. Also, only the mud and sand features work in 4W High. The others only work in 4W low.

Good points. Along those lines, momentum can be your best friend or worst enemy. It can get you through things but too much pedal can end up breaking things too.

Excellent video. A lot of people don't fully understand how their four-wheel drive system works. Also important is how the middle diff or transfer case distributes torque between the front and rear axles. In your cross axle example, an open middle diff will result in no tire getting more torque than it takes to spin the free spinning wheels. Modern 4WD systems, full time 4WD systems and transfer cases deal attempt to deal with this by managing the torque split between front and rear axles. So, a locking middle diff is the holy grail.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
Agree. It can also be difficult to get detailed information about your specific 4WD system. Some of the nomenclature manufacturers use can be misleading. For example, some manufacturers incorrectly use marketing terms that suggest that their vehicles have a true center locking diff when if fact they do not.

Another great video with awesome explanation and I loved the video diagram of the cross axel scenario. I know that the reason to go out was to demonstrate the locker i'm just curious if you would have been able to get out of it with the break traction control you spoke about in the beginning. Some MT would not be a bad idea either especially on your rig. It looks like an extremely capable 4 runner and I really like what you've done with it.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
All good points. Yes, you are correct that the purpose was to explain and demonstrate what can happen with open diffs and LS diffs in a cross axle scenario. You are also correct that I could have gotten out of that spot by any number of means including just a little momentum. The ATRAC and MTS system on the 4Runner would have done a nice job getting me out as well. I was actually pretty happy with the ATRAC traction control system in the 4Runner. I had the air lockers installed because I had the diffs open anyway for regearing. Always nice to have as many tools in the tool box as you can when you are out overlanding. Good comment. I look forward to exchanging more notes with you as we post additional videos!

Good educational video! My JKU Overland rig is currently open differentials. I’m torn between air lockers or trutrac LSDs. It’s not a rock crawler so I’m leaning more towards the limited slips as the road manners will be excellent and the price is much better. My TJ trail jeep has a lunchbox locker in the front diff and contemplating putting an ox locker or LSD in the rear.

Can you do a video comparison using your rear locker with atrac and then front and rear locker? I’ve heard that with the front locked, it’s harder to steer the front. Where as with atrac, you can still steer with easy. Long story short, atrac with rear locker vs front and rear locker. Great channel btw. Subbed

The video on your channel called "Offroad Toyotas La Grange OHV" is pretty cool! Those were some steep hills. You are correct that it is hard to steer with a front locker. In fact, turning with the front locker engaged can put a lot of stress on the CV axles. I have an ARB air locker on my front axle. After it is engaged, the steering feels heavy. It is recommended that you disengage it during moderate and sharp turns. So, it really does become situational. There are times that the front and rear lockers are the best pick and other times that rear locker with A-TRAC works better. Big thanks for the sub!

@Overland Pacific Northwest, Great video thank you. Any thoughts on the risk of busting a front CV joint from additional stress caused by the locker? I am thinking about a TrueTrac or locker in the front and rear to replace my factory limited slips, but I don't want to solve my traction problems by creating a new problem of snapping CVs. Thanks for any thoughts on this.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW Жыл бұрын
I wondered about stress on the CVs as well when I first installed my front locker. I've had it now for about 2 years. It is an ARB air locker. I have not been gentle on it and it, together with the CVs, have taken everything I have thrown at it. My brother had the same air locker on his front axle. He has not had any problems either. My only regret is that I did not replace the rear e-locker (it has failed twice) with an ARB air locker. They are instant. You can engage them at any speed. You don't have to be in 4WL. I haven't heard any bad reviews. So, I think the front axle components can handle it.

@OverlandPNW

We do have this exact scenario on film. In our A-TRAC video, starting a 3:00, I show an example of A-TRAC failing on an obstacle and then engaging the front locker and easily getting over the obstacle. In the field, the front locker has often done the job where A-TRAC/MTS failed. Unfortunately, this is not often captured on video. I absolutely love my front locker. It does not have the speed limitations that A-TRAC/MTS have and it can be engaged on the fly. It is my "go to." Cheers!

You may want to consider adding differential breathers at the same time. Other than that, use a shop you have confidence in and make sure your air compressor is high-quality. You’ll love the air locker!

Will A TRC not brake the free spinning wheels in the cross axle situation? Or was it turned off in this example you had at the start of the video?

Great Video! Where did you mount your Switch panel for your aux lights? I'm trying to figure out where i want to mount my SPOD in my 4Runner.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
I have a SwitchPro panel that is mounted on a bracket that is connected to the front windshield side frame. So, it sits in the driver side corner just above the dash. There is a new SwitchPro mounting kit from SDHQ Offroad that puts the panel on the little ledge just below the driver side air vent. It is a very clean look. I don't know if the SPOD would fit there or not. I've got the same problem now, trying to figure out where to mount stuff. Let me know if you come up with a good solution.

What are your thoughts on the front locker now that you have had it for a while? Trying to decide if I should install one when re gearing. Do you feel you have a noticeable advantage of not having one when off-roading with vehicles that do not have one? How much more was the cost with adding the locker when re gearing?
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 2 жыл бұрын
When I look at the cost of my build, the front ARB air locker is some of the best money spent. I use it all the time. I have had one electronic failure on my factory rear locker. Sam (the Tacoma in our group) has had three electronic failures of his rear factory locker. These all required repair at the dealer. In contrast, the ARB air locker has been rock solid and problem free. The factory locker on the rear is a little temperamental about engaging and disengaging. Often, you have to go back and forth to get it to engage. The air locker is a flip of a switch and instant. The rear factory locker can only be engaged in 4L and you have to stop to do it. In contrast, the ARB front air locker can be engaged in 4L and 4H. In addition, it can be theoretically engage at any speed. Here is what ARB's website says about that: "An ARB Air Locker can be engaged at any speed as long as both wheels are spinning at the same rate. If one wheel is spinning faster than the other, what is called “crash locking” will occur and can cause damage to the internal gears." It is always safest to stop before engaging the air locker but I regularly engage and disengage it on the fly. For me, the question about whether or not to get a front locker is one of driving style. If you are regularly driving on terrain that requires a locker, then I'd definitely get it. My brother just re-geared and had an ARB air locker installed on his front axel at the same time. He likes it so much, he wishes he put one on his back axle as well. Hope that helps!

@@OverlandPNW We have an equivalent to the 4 Runner called a Fortuner. It is based on to the Hilux pickup platform. So I guess Toyota don't see the need for the 4 Runner as both models will slot into the same market segment. Me personally, I like the rugged looks of the 4 Runner. The Landcruiser 79 series has cult status here. A full custom build is near the $200k mark. Despite the price the waiting list is at least six months.

Dunno if the Atrac is different on the GX460 but it just works all the time... lock the center diff and Atrac, which is always on, does the rest... is the 4 runner Atrac different from the GX460 atrac??
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the GX460 but the 4Runner actually has two systems. One is TRAC and the other is A-TRAC. The first one, TRAC is part of the full-time safety system. Like ABS, it is on all the time. TRAC constantly monitors the tires and will help prevent wheel spin when accelerating on slippery surfaces. A-TRAC, on the other hand, can only be used when in 4 Wheel Low and has to be activated by manually turning the feature on (with the A-TRAC button) after shifting into 4 Low. It is a more robust anti-slip system meant for off-road applications. Note that when you shift into 4 Wheel Low, TRAC and VSC are automatically turned off. That's how it works on a 4Runner. I believe the GX460 has full time AWD/4WD with a low locking center diff, right? So, that would be a completely different system than the 4Runner. I don't know the GX460 system but on the 4Runner, A-TRAC is a great tool but it only works a low speeds. If you exceed approximately 5 mph, it no longer activates.

@@OverlandPNW thanks for the input... I think the gx has vsc on all the time and atrac on all the time.. no buttons to push... not sure about the speeds it starts working.. I'm just surprised the 4runner at the speeds you were going couldn't get over the cross-up condition with atrac activated... I thought they were the same systems as the gx version.. who knows.. also I wonder if it's the KDSS on the gx that allows both wheels to go full droop because both bars essentially disconnect

Front Locker on a non-solid axle vehicle? I need to understand this. Watching now.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be done. Solid axle is definitely a stronger application for a locker. With non-solid axles, there is an increased risk of CV Axle breakage. Depends on how hard you want to play. So, a lot of guys upgrade CV Axles. Especially if they are into hardcore rock climbing. It has been a nice upgrade for me. I'm more into overlanding than rock climbing. So, no broken axles yet.

I have a problem with ARB lockers. The twin washers inside the air line ring (seal housing) mounted onto the axle spline gear (bearing journal) is so low quality. They begin to leak after a year and start to pump your diff oil out to the air pump and now you have an oil leak from your air pump. And when the leak increases with more wear, your lockers stop locking. You have to dismantle the whole diff to change those washers. And guess what, those also wear and here we go again. They are constantly subjected to friction when the axles are moving. This is a big big design weakness. I prefer electrically operated lockers now.

@@OverlandPNW Mine never leaked from the breather. Are you having any difficulty engaging the locker? Is the compressor working more than before or more frequently than before when the locker engaged? This means there is an air leak probably from those o-rings and the time to change them is coming.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 3 жыл бұрын
@@falconpatrol3565 The locker engages with no problem. The compressor does not need to kick on to keep it engaged. So, the 0-rings are probably good for now. Thanks again for the info !
