When roadtrips go wrong... wow, that's.... that's one way of describing the situation! 😂 But, as usual, your cool/calm/collected approach serves you well, and s'alright in the end. It never ceases to amaze me how your storytelling is developing and how you manage to share a well-known situation in such a fresh and engaging way. We've all seen the KZbin clickbait titles that prophesy doom, only to reveal a happy ending. Yet OS doesn't fall into this trap: you share your experience, without hype or disappointment. It's a bittersweet feeling! Realising just how far you are from anything familiar. On one hand exciting, but it also makes me yearn for home 🧡
@Alex-qn4hb2 жыл бұрын
I got a little emotional when Ches asked Ben "don't you feel like a long way from home". I think I know this feeling too well. You feel happy, lucky and grateful to be travelling/living abroad and it's your dream and what you've wanted but there's always a moment when you get the feeling that you're so far that nothing around looks/feels/smells like home. It's not quite being "homesick" because you want to be there and you're happy but in some moments you just miss home a little more. PS: I don't know if that's what you guys were feeling in that moment, that's just what reminded me of said feeling.
@OverlandingSophia2 жыл бұрын
Yessss Alex you've summed it up better than I could! That's EXACTLY how I was feeling. Everything felt so alien, so different to anything we're used to. The ground was soft dusty sand like nothing we've ever felt. We were surrounded by giant cacti and at that moment I felt so far from anything we've known. I'd have given anything to smell grass after a rain, or hear the birdsong like in my nan's garden every morning. Like you say, it's not to say you're not happy but more like a sudden, bittersweet realisation of how far you are 🧡

On sand you need 4 wheel drive low and you let the tires down to 10 -15 lbs pressure. Then you pump them back up when you want to hit the road or something solid again.

Yes! We have no idea where our air compressor is. Haven’t thought about it in so long but we should have done that really. As to the 4 wheel drive, we can’t do much about that part 😅

@@OverlandingSophia Right, and while the Mexicans drive their 2 wheel drive cars on the sand with their tires let down we've never managed it. Just be careful when you go down those off off off Baja roads. Look well ahead and before you get to a sandy bit, stop and walk it to see if there's something hard after it. Those roads have a tendency to go from a bit of sand to car stopping sand in only a short distance. Also be prepared to do a 75 point turn if you find a bit you can turn around on if you have to. Good luck... it's a beautiful place isn't it?

I was in Baja last year and spent the night at the same spot you did by the light house just south of town. Also drove to the cave painting and they are amazing but I also highly recommend going with a guide to get there safer but also to learn more about the area and the painting. I drove a RAM ProMaster 3500 and the trick is to air down your tires to smooth out the ride. I carry traction mats, large air compressor, tow rope with 2 soft shackles, and a come along winch. Would not have gone on my own without those items and a lot more driving history..

@@OverlandingSophia The painting were great BUT there is no protection for them and after talking to locals, they are afraid that if too many people go there unsupervised that these 10,000 to 15,000 year old treasures will be destroyed. @@jerryjenkins5739 To be honest the whale thing isn't our jam. The petting thing doesn't sit right with us but it's a really good point you make about the paintings. It's probably a good thing we didn't make it there and advertise it as a free for all for anyone in a van. We really want to see the ones in the Sierra de San Francisco, think you have to hike all day to go and find them but they're so remote unless you're with a guide there's no way you'll find them, so hopefully they are remote enough to stay protected 🤞

Hi you two. What would a post be without a little drama. The max trax did the job beautifully. I imagine they will work in snow as well. I'll look them up although who knows if they will be needed here in Connecticut. This year's weather has been very confused. The cacti forrest was , some might think, bleak but I found it beautiful. Were there birds there? I wonder if there is a species that is able to drink from the cacti. Chesca, watching you on the paddle board in that totally undisturbed cove, hanging with magnificent pelicans definitely made me wish I could snap my fingers and be there. The salt marsh brackish water creek that I live on brings wonderful birdlife.but also is home to giant snapping turtles and the last few nights we've had fox, coyote and a first sighting of a bobcat ! Hoping that your journey this week is just fun with no hiccups. oxo to you and Ben and the kids, Ellen

Honestly the Max Trax were so good! Very impressed with them, hopefully we don’t have to use them too much 😅 Funny you should ask about birds! Last night we heard the loudest hoot from a Great Horned Owl, it had an almost bass-like quality to it in the desert and after a quick Google, turns out there’s lots of owls and birds in the desert! If you look at the giant cacti, they all have holes and cavities in them, so they just nest in there. And there are lots of little birds flying around in the day. Definitely not a lifeless place. Would love to see it in the spring when the flowers bloom 😍🌸🌺 xx

My mum used to do cheesy scallops in shells like that. So 80s!

Wow !! I had to watch twice-a 2 cup of coffee trip☕️. Glad that you didn’t get stuck in the riverbed 🙂 River always seems to find a stick to play with 😂 Thanks for the adventure!!!! Have fun and stay safe !!!!

Ah thank you Starr, second cup of coffee always tastes better than the first 😃 River always finds the BIGGEST stick she can physically carry until she sees a more interesting stick, then she'll pick up that one, and again and again. At least she keeps herself entertained 😂 Hope you're doing well, sending love from Mexico! 💕

Ohhh this made us smile! But enjoy single-dom! Both Ben and I say it is some of the best times of our lives for completely different reasons to the ones being together 😂 xx

as you said "don't you feel a long way from home" yes I would say but finally you will be returning to the UK but for me 19 years in Sofia Bulgaria and now moving to live in the Philippines in June I won't be returning home to the UK anytime soon if ever I just don't feel a connection with my home country anymore (keltic nomad) @GlynThomasJones

I guess when you live somewhere else for 19 years your concept of home has probably shifted quite a bit! Do you think you'll ever come back to Bulgaria?
