When we put out the video about the unfortunate owners of that Bobcat tractor a few weeks ago, many were quick to blame him for 'overworking' his tractor. They were confident! But what does that even mean? Today we'll cover that concept and attempt to use our tractor beyond its limits and we'll show you what happens.

Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

People might be calling it overloading or overworking, but their definition is way more broad than just a lift capacity test. I'd say the more common so-called "overwork" issues are working outside of the operational specs of the machine. So that would include things like lifting max capacity with the left fork only (i.e. way unbalanced load bends your SSQA bracket or loader arms). Pulling your box blade along on hard pack in high gear with the rippers all the way down your foot to the floor max speed (snap a 3 point lift arm). Lifting max capacity all the time with no rear ballast (blow front axle seals or steering cylinder/brackets/axle pivot). Operating on a hill with no ballast and a high load in the bucket and rolling the tractor. Last one is not reading the operator manual and then you're surprised when you realize that engaging the diff lock at 7mph is bad for the tractor's health. In summary, Courtney is right. Everyone else is wrong, lol

Hi Courtney, thanks for your videos! On the Kubota, you can move the lift cylinder rear pin points down to the lower hole next to the cab. If you aren’t aware, that position is for max lift but reduce lift height slightly. The top is for height but less lifting capacity. 😊

I think these guys come from craftsman lawn tractors. And many use their 25k wonder machine to move a yard of mulch, take their proud "I moved mulch" picture. Wash, wax and have a beer with their tractor and then give it a much needed break. Lol. It's all you see in the sub compact forums.

I do agree with you Courtney, although I also have forks on the back, and was using it to move some pallets, which it would lift up but not all the way, so while driving I could notice the bypass working, generating heat I would assume, I guessed it was oke for short time but might have become a problem if I used it to long like that. A solution if possible would also be to set the height to a height that it can handle, but I did not realize this immediately. The other thing I am wondering is how do people get there loader bent? By putting all the force on one side?

Tractors cannot lift beyond their capacity, but you can get a bad pick and overstress the tractor. For example, getting under a boulder with one side of the loader and lifting all the load essentially on one side of the front axle… that comes down to the operator.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Certainly. That's operator issues, but not overloading or overworking the tractor.
@slowride55
@slowride55 Жыл бұрын
There are still things you can do as an operator that will damage a machine. Pulling a HST too hard in too high of a range, shutting down the machine full throttle after hours of hard use, driving with the park brake on, driving on hard pavement in 4wd repeatedly, etc.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
I talk about high range. You really can't do much pulling in high range as the tractor tells you it hates it. Either bogging down or stalling. Yes, those other items mentioned are abuse, but not overloading a machine.

Great video, as always. I agree that a tractor can only do what it will do, but respectfully, I think you missed the target of "over working" a piece of equipment. Operating anything near max capacity for long periods puts more stress on the equipment that light duty use. And if the equipment was made with lower quility materials, that stress is going to show up faster. I'm not saying that was the case with the Bobcat tractor you referred to, but just in general. All bearings and seals are not created equal.

I put a chain around an engine block awhile back (I think, about 800 LBS). I could lift it with my JD 3038e, for the most part. With the bucket about three feet off the ground the block would just clear the ground, if I lifted it much more than that, the rear tires would start to float a bit. If I hit a bit of a bump with the rear tires, it would tip the tractor such that the block would just touch the ground. If I let off on the lift, I could then pick it up again. I was able to put the block onto a trailer, but just, a lift of about 18 inches for the bottom of the block and about five feet for the bucket. I think I was at about two-thirds the capacity for the loader, but I exceed the ballast on my tractor. I figure more people get hurt using a loader because they lifted more than they were really ballasted for than that they exceed the specifications of the loader.

Our workmaster 65 can lift more than it should and if you drive around with to much weight on the front it can bust the front hubs. We use it to wrap and feed baleage so must be incredibly careful as the parts are over $2000 to replace the planetary hub. Another guy on utube had his 3point break on him running a disk mower. They sell an auxiliary cylinder you have to install before the tractor will handle a mower. If you mow in dusty conditions there is a baffle that needs installed in engine bay that will keep the trans cooler from filling up with mud. Another utuber runs his as a logging skidder and had to order it with the forestry package loader arms. The manufacturer advertises all these uses but the dealers are mostly clueless about the upgrades to run a utility tractor as an ag tractor.
@GoodWorksTractors

How do you lift more than it should, I'm curious? Definitely all sorts of things you need to know about certain setups. Lots of dealer turnover these days too, so the knowledge base needs to get built back up.
@ricksanchez7459
@ricksanchez7459 Жыл бұрын
@Good Works Tractors I'm not sure, I just know it will bust a hub if we lift to much and tram around with it on the front. I believe it has to do with static and dynamic rating along with how far out we had set our wheels. The loader may be rated for 2425lb, but that is flat ground, lowest gear, closest pin. With the bale squeeze and a wet bale on front and back we have set our wheels back in and crawler gear to feed. Our neighbor has a powerstar 75 and has had no problems and he runs his in a similar job. On a side note, our s3010 has lost reverse gear twice now in 1100hrs. The gear is tiny and the bearings within it even smaller. I think the manufacturer designed it to reverse the machine and thats it. If you try smoothing manure or sand by backdragging it overloads them tiny bearings.

I think you can safely assume all tractor hydraulic systems have a pressure relief valve in the system. When you lift a load that doesn't move, it simply means it hit the pressure set on the relief valve and oil will flow back into the reservoir. It's not anything that will harm the tractor although if you held the loader stick back long enough it might increase the temperature of your hydraulic oil. But it's not like trying to move a stationary truck with a manual transmission in high gear and you'd end up cooking your clutch. What is the orange cord on the Summit tractor?

Get a good speed up in second gear and slam the bucket into a firm hillside... raise a long PTO too high with an attachment on and watch what happens to the transmission... Jam the lift lever to maximum speed for every lift, then slam the bucket back down on the ground at the same speed due to lack of control. The 3e Series might have the weakest loader I’ve ever used for a tractor its size. EDIT: I still think it’s a decent machine, but the comparable Kubota Standard L Series is better all around. However, typically a bit more expensive though that might have changed in the last year or two.

Your comment about loss of leverage definitely had to do with lift capacity. Leverage isn’t related to navigation. A few inches longer on the loader isn’t going to have any significant impact on navigation though.

It is true that things like hydraulics have relief valves, but not all aspects of a tractor have such safeties. If you pull too much load too long you can overheat a hydrostatic drive. Old fashioned gear transmissions weren’t nearly so susceptible to this. Similarly, trying to take too heavy a load downhill can overheat and damage the brakes which can the lead to overrevving and damaging the engine. And carrying very heavy loads at low speeds damages bearings faster than carrying light loads at higher speeds. Bearing races fatigue just as do other metal parts subject to cyclical loading. So, yes, you can overload your tractor in a way it can’t prevent and cause damage over time. The hydraulics are a very special case and should not be generalized to the entire tractor.

@@GoodWorksTractors Carrying loads above what the tractor is rated for or overrevving the engine is definitely in the abuse rather than use category. However, you are in good company as many folks abuse their tractors. Most will never know as most tractors will easily go 10,000 hours used within specifications and probably 5,000 if abused. Few tractor owners, other than real farmers, will ever see 5,000 hours so they won’t see the affects of their abuse.

@@GoodWorksTractors Sure you can. Ballast isn’t always attached to the hydraulics. You can add ballast racks and overload with ballast in addition to picking up the maximum load the hydraulics to the max and thus overload the axles. If you haul too heavy a hay wagon down a steep hill with a small tractor, it isn’t too hard to overrev the engine.

@@GoodWorksTractors I mean a 30 second google search will show you that you’re 100% wrong. A good example is the fuse for the headlights, yes it has a side effect of potentially quelling any fire risk. Although things burn down all the time with these failsafes in place. But let’s ignore that, right?it’s there SPECIFICALLY to protect the circuit. Not the headlights. It’s the same with same with a relief valve designed SPECIFICALLY to protect hoses, valves and seals. The physical size of the cylinders and the geometry employed to mount them to the boom determines the lift capacity and also determines the point at which that relief valve go into bypass. If you don’t believe me. Take the 1.5” cylinders off your loader and replace them with 3” cylinders. I promise you that WITHOUT shimming the relief valve for higher pressure. It will lift substantially more. Now it’s going to lift about half as fast as it normally does. But it’s going to physically move twice as much weight.

@@brandoncrimmins6296 I think you're splitting hairs just to split hairs, the as engineered solution provided by the manufacturer you can't "overload". If all of the specifications as listed in the service manuals are followed you can't break anything by performing work as designed and specified by the manufacturer. The relief valve might be set even lower than the line pressure from factory to account for something else. If you look at 1, 2 and 3 series John deeres they probably use all the same rated hoses and such but they don't have the same overall system pressure rating. That's not what good works tractors is saying.

Only way I know you can "overwork" your tractor would be stacking weight on the forks when they are already off the ground. I can say I'm personally guilty of that. With your 3pt test if you had a hydraulic top link it might have lifted enough you could have carried it. The only other way I know you could over work a tractor would be flat out abuse such as digging with the loader and trying to get a stump of rock out and ramming it. But to me that's not over work that's just plain abuse and a totally different topic

wow on concrete with a too big a load and a 30 second test it doesn't do anything shock horror. about as informative as a test drive of a car. I'll concrete my paddocks right now! Trying to lift too much on concrete for 30 seconds is usually not the thing that breaks it. Reduce the weight to maximum you can lift to axle height - basically it won't tip. Use low gear and do 100 hours out in the paddocks. I'm fairly sure the summit will have leaking front seals - the bigger kubota's should be find as they don't use a knuckle. from some hunting it appears most of the frame issues have now been solved on most newer tractors - in the current market no not really upgrading. ugh mine is before they solved them so it has just had the frame welded back together and it did nothing outside of spec - low gear, keep the load low, used off road and concrete all oem attachments. Apparently living on a hill isn't ideal for a tractor - which makes some sense and to be honest but I live on a hill. in fairness mine is nothing like a deere hill combine losing a self adjusting drive axle that is a big job have a look at the video.
