I think you don't realize that the dude LITERALLY had no good choice in the matter, he was dead either way. Pissing off Aphrodite does not end well for people either. I think she made a woman fall in love with a bull for some minor slight and forced her to give birth to a minotaur. Again, the man had no good choice in this.... WHICH IS WHY THE GOD SHIRKED THE TASK TO HIM BECAUSE HE FUCKING KNEW THAT IT WAS A LANDMINE!

In fairness, Hera and Athena didn't actively fuck Paris over, they just took advantage of the fact that Aphrodite fucked up and basically invited everybody to go kick in Paris's front door.
@strategicarchitect869
@strategicarchitect869 4 жыл бұрын
Er...the birth of the Minotaur was the result of the King of Crete not sacrificing his best bull to Poseidon as promised, the ocean god got mad and essentially got the wife to fall for the bull then you got the minotaur. Though with Paris (while there was no indication that he could've just refused the bribe and just make the choice) he could have just not take the bribe and just end it there. To be honest even without the bride he was gonna be a dead man anyway--all three goddesses have a revenge streak that's legendary.

@@strategicarchitect869 Does Poseidon have the power to make people fall in love, or did he call in a favour from Aphrodite or Eros? I never got that side of the story. Still, you think of everything that happened next and you think "and all that death could have been avoided if the king of Crete had just kept his promise and sacrificed the bull like he said he would!" I mean, did he really think Poseidon wouldn't be able to tell the difference?
@strategicarchitect869
@strategicarchitect869 4 жыл бұрын
@@agenttheater5 As far as I remember (may have to dive into my books again) Poseidon didn't call a favor to Aphrodite or Eros for that. I think in a sense you had some 'artistic liberties' being taken when these stories were made or passed down. Though I would assume some of the Greek Gods had some power to manipulate human minds. And there are some interpretations of the story that Minos assumed that Poseidon would not mind the substitute or just outright think he tricked the Ocean god. Common theme in Greek myths: trying to outsmart the Gods can really screw you over (in more ways that one it seems).
@imaran1303

@@strategicarchitect869 I am pretty sure that Poseidon called in a favor from Aphrodite, cause you know... she is the goddess of love and whatnot, so if you wanna get a human all frisky for a animal, you SHOULD get a Goddess who specializes in that to do it. Point is: You had Hera, Athena and Aphrodite asking you, who is the hottest. All three of them capable of giving you fucking hell. And I am pretty sure that Paris never expected Aphrodite to give him a woman who is already married to a fucking War-hungry King. And any of the other goddess would have easily fucked you over ten way to sunday was well. My point was this: There was no right answer here. Paris was fucked either way. It's like your wife asking you if she looks fat in those jeans, you say yes, she will be mad because you called her fat, you say no, she will get mad because she thinks you are only saying it to avoid hurting her feelings. It was a unwinnable situation.

Also, don't forget that he was just a lowly shepherd at the time. (Not sure when he got recognised as a prince of Troy, but he certainly wasn't raised as one.) When the hell would he ever need battle tactics, and what kind of civil war would have to happen to make him king? Nope, Aphrodite's offer was really the safest option, given what he thought he knew.

He probably would’ve met tragedy either way. Let’s say he picked Hera, who promised him Europe and Asia. He controls 2 continents but makes a BUNCH of enemies in the process that could’ve banded together, overthrew him, killed him, and dismantled the empire. Athena and Aphrodite are both capable of destroying this, as it takes an inspired and smart strategy for the overthrow and a messy love scandal to signal the downfall. If he picked Athena, he was guaranteed military might and that he won’t fall in battle. The Trojan War would eventually happen anyway (Troy and and much of Ancient Greece hated each other for decades at that point and Helen/Aphrodite were just scapegoats) and Paris wins and survives it. However, Hera and Aphrodite are political mavens that sow unrest and distrust in his court, eventually leading to his exile. He was doomed from the start.

4:28 Plus it turns out that actually the whole Trojan war started because Helen's father paid tribute to a lot of gods for some reason but forgot to pay tribute to Aphrodite, so she swore she'd make both of his daughters famous for their infidelities as a punishment for that slight - Helen's sister is Clytemnestra, and believe me she had a very good reason for cheating on and then killing her husband Agamemnon.

Technically “Ištar” is the Akkadian name. The Sumerian name for the goddess is Inanna. Due to the long cultural symbiosis that occurred in lower Mesopotamia between the Sumerians and the Akkadians they often became used interchangeably, though the earliest inscriptions are Sumerian and refer to her as Inanna(among other epithets). Interestingly, Phoenician, like Akkadian, is a Semitic language, but Sumerian is a language isolate, with no known relatives.

The safe choice for Paris would be giving the apple to Persephone. No matter what the other goddesses do to him, if the queen of the dead likes him, he's good to go. Either that or saying "I am a mortal and cannot appropriately choose between the goddesses with my puny mortal eyes, so I'm going to have to ask another god to step in here" and hand the responsibility to Hades, who would of course immediately hand it to Persephone anyway. Either way, Persephone would end up with the apple, and Paris would be safe.

She makes me think about that short speech in 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' (a English comedy about a young man who's killing all his relatives so he can claim the title denied him and his poor late mother just because she married for love rather than station) where the main character Louis is telling his childhood friend and now girlfriend (she's married to a rich but boring man and he's courting the widow of one of the cousins he killed because she has the right background for the title he's aiming for, but apparently neither of those facts are sufficient reasons for them not to see each other from time to time) how he'd describe her to the woman he's courting: "I'd say that you were the perfect combination of imperfections. I'd say that your nose was just a little too short, your mouth just a little too wide, but yours was a face a man could see in his dreams for the whole of his life. I'd say that you were vain, selfish, deceitful, cruel. I'd say that you were adorable. I'd say that you were, Sibella." Replace Sibella with Aphrodite and you basically have her - if she hasn't already cursed us halfway through the speech for saying that her nose was too short.

Okay so that thing about Athena turning Arachne into a spider out of jealousy...that was some BS. It was a retelling of the myth by Ovid, who had a tendency to characterize the gods as far more unfair and hurtful to mortals because he was projecting his anger at authority onto the gods. He was exiled from his home by an authority figure and found it unfair so whenever he retold myths, he framed it as the gods being petty and poor innocent mortals getting hurt along the way by this infinitely more powerful being. In most earlier versions of the story of Arachne, Athena does turn her into a spider, but typically as a punishment for not lacking wisdom when deciding what to weave and also hubris (since Greek mythology), rather than a petty act of jealousy

When three naked actual goddesses are standing in front of anyone, rational thought might be a bit too much to ask for. Presumably, Aphrodite would have been more comfortable posing for him along with generally being more charming - Hera was generally not considered very pleasant, and Athena wasn't big on the whole being a sexual object thing - so he could have just honestly thought she won the beauty contest (he was chosen to judge because he'd demonstrated honesty and fairness, after all), too.

Also, a little side note, Aphrodite is ALSO one of the most jealous goddesses, with Hera being more jealous over her husband's love interests, Aphrodite takes the love and BEAUTY bit VERY seriously lol. She cursed Andromedis to be eaten by the kraken because her mom dared to claim she was more beautiful than Aphrodite. She did the same pretty much with her sons wife, because she started being worshipped...as if she was Aphrodite. So, to say he picked wrong is really not correct, even with him not thinking because while yes, Hera and Athena are both jealous, Aphrodite takes the cake when it comes to jealousy over not being the hottest. In fact, its a wonder that Hera, and even more so Athena, stepped in to try to take the golden apple, or the claim I should say, considering neither are goddesses had any association with beauty, like I said, Athena more so, since her role was actually considered a masculine one in Greek society, and Hera was more on par with a middle aged woman raising kids.

If there was no contract to make all greek kings to join the battle ,Athena wouldnt't be there . Athena wasn't angry with Paris but she was there to keep her man save as they are forced to joing Meneleus in the battle against Troy . Hera isn't strong as Aphrodite so yea. Still Aphrodite won at the end she became Venus Genetrix ,win win !

Or caused his lovers to assassinate him. Aphrodite was pretty sadistic. Heck she could set things up so that a priestess of Aphrodite would be taken as a lover by any kid he had, and that priestess would then manipulate said kid into assassinating him.
