I feel like the snow Queen not being all that present is purposeful. She’s not a villain in the traditional way; she’s just a dangerous presence. She barely even kidnaps the kid; he comes of his own accord, and she just doesn’t care enough to return him. The real villain is the mirror shards; something INSIDE Kay. Gerta is essentially rescuing him from himself.

Which is so beautiful at least I think so.... In one version I read he also made friends with the bad bullying young boys from the village. All in all the story boils down to a love one can save u from ur own self-made doom by bad life decisions.

@@Grim_Sister It seems like evil mirror shards have the side effect of causing ADHD symptoms. That wasn't the only thing it did, however. I don't want to go SJW, but is this story demonizing the neurodivergent? "Someone is more interested in math than girls? Obviously he is being corrupted by demonic magic and needs to be fixed." I'm probably reading too much into this.

Honestly the snow queen feels like a young kid who found a stray animal they liked. "He followed me home, so I'm going to keep him! We're going to play fun games and I'm sure I won't accidentally get him killed by not knowing what I'm doing - Hey why are you turning blue?"

This has always been my interpretation but In the version I read, by the time she kissed him the first time his heart was already halfway frozen (if you got a mirror peice in the heart your heart would turn into a block of ice and youd die) and her kiss didnt necessarily stop the ice from spreading but did make him not feel cold anymore (potential reference to this by Disney with "the cold never bothered me anyway") when she kisses him a second time he forgets everything but now only sees the ice queen as a beautiful woman rather than, well, an ice lady.(I think she did this so he wouldnt miss his friends, family, home, ect. Since the flowery lady did the same thing) She intentionally doesn't kiss him a 3rd time stating that if she were to do so he'd die.(this suggests to me that she doesnt wish any harm towards him) So I always interpreted this as her saving his life in a way, and she just plopped him in the ice castle till someone could thaw his heart. I also personally interpreted the whole eternity puzzle thing as her not knowing how to entertain a child so she just gave him that to keep him preoccupied while she worked.

Not having read The Snow Queen, but having been brought up on H. C. Andersen stories, that to me sounds like "Clumsy Hans" (Klods Hans), a story about a "simple" and generally well meaning young man, stumbling into a situation where a lot of dudes was proposing to a princess, whom thought they all were boring, till she met Hans, who was weird, rode in on a pig, covered in mud and funny. Except not the case for yuki onna (snow woman) From what I read in Wikipedia (specifically the one by Lafkadio Hearn, a Greek writer who moved to Japan as Koizumi Yakumo), there were these two woodcutters, one a young man, and another an elderly. One winter they were stuck in a snowstorm. They found a random hut in the mountain and decided to rest there Then one evening, the youngster woke up to find a yuki onna in their room. She froze the old man to death (probably cuz ok boomer) and was going to freeze the zoomer next. But then she spared him on pretense of "damn son, I coulda killed you too had you not been such a hot boi. I can't waste away such a beauty. Tell you what, if you don't tell anyone about me and this shit, I'll keep you living. F*k you laterrrrrr..." Years later, that dude met a random woman named Oyuki (yeah nahhh that's pretty sus, press the emergency button), and she was like "hey there, wanna go out with me???" Then the two dated and got married and fricced each other and lived for more decades raising their kids. For some reason, Oyuki didn't age. So that aging husband was like "funny... You looked the same since we first met. Long before we did I was out cutting wood with my grandpa (or granduncle) when we encountered a cold bitch, as gorgeous as you. She froze Gramps and almost did the same to me. I was unsure if I was trippin balls or that was a legit yuki onna who I remember said something like fuk you later..." Then Oyuki was like "youuu motherfffukka, I am the cold bitch. I told you that as long as you didn't tell anyone of me and that shit, I'll keep you living!!! Now what... I can't freeze your lips down your dick cuz you gotta take care of our children. Do that for me will ya??? Cuz I'm signing the divorce papers. Fuk you never..." And the yuki onna was never seen again

I love The Snow Queen. Red's synopsis is accurate, however the little details all throughout the book just makes it better!!! For example, the part with the old lady has more detail in the actual story because the lady knew that Gerda lived near a garden full of Roses, and she knew if Gerda would see roses, her spell would be broken, so she magically buries the roses in her garden and it was a rose pattern on the lady's hat that jogged Gerda's memory. Also the only reason the roses knew Kay wasn't dead was because they had lived magically underground due to the lady's spell and they did not see him buried. This isn't much of a spoiler, only more details of that part of the story. This book is so good! It's full of so many more details that make it entertaining and it's a personal favorite

She also just skips out totally on the Laplander and the Finnlander as just "two old ladies". At the time of writing Laplanders were the only people in the world to have domesticated caribou/reindeer, which is why the reindeer goes to them. Because it's his home. There are also funny bits about since they are basically entering the Ends of the World--like the home of the Graeae in Greek myth--their cottage is extremely cozy. So cozy the Finn wears an Ice Box cube on her head to keep from passing out and puts one on Gerta as well for the same reason. Edit: I think I now realize he's describing the Finn's house as a sauna.

A bards whole thing is magic singing and as an eloquence bard she physically can't roll badly on attempts to convince people to help her. Maxing her charisma fuels her spellcasting and makes her even more the pure beacon of good everyone wants to help. I used the rest of her points to round out constitution and wisdom as she definitely needs the con to make it through the north pole without gloves or boots and I don't like odd numbers. It sounds like the story is a loosely a very imaginative way of showing two friends losing touch as they go through adolesence and are more exposed to the influences of societal expectations (intellectuality and detachedness ig at the time of this story) and reconnecting later in adulthood by reconnecting and reminiscing or whatever when he finally "recognizes" her from back then, and are able to reconcile. This is honestly the closest I can get to an actual theme, someone else can probably break down the actual, borderline satirical journey she went on.

I think you're on point. In the closest English translation I've read online, it said that the frozen lake Kai was sitting on is called 'The Mirror of Reason'. Maybe it was to show how Kai had become totally devoid of affection because he's too busy being snobby? Then ofc is how the answer to the ice puzzle he was solving is 'eternity', I don't think its significance was ever explained but I could easily see it having deeper meanings in modern adaptations of the story.

I definitely get the vibe of adolescence and reaching emotional (and sexual) maturity as an underlying theme. Kay goes all in on ~reason,~ which manifests as arrogance and cruelty. Very teenager energy, and holds up remarkably well into the modern day. Unfortunately Gerda gets stuck with the task of fixing him, but she does get to go on a big adventure to save her friend/beloved. Kay just has to remember that experiencing emotion is good, actually.

Okay, I just had a brain wave: This whole story is an allusion to growing up. See read more for a detailed explanation So, the mirror shards in the heart represent teenage angst, and his pretentiousness strikes me as the old "I want to be an adult NOW" thought every kid has when they are denied something. This combination led him to meet the snow queen and go somewhere cold and alone, doing a pointless exercise for something idealistic (king of the world) and childish (a pair of ice skates). This represents how being cynical and trying to grow up to fast can leave you lonely and miserable. In contrast, Gerda has to go on a long complicated journey, relying on the kindness of strangers. Sometimes those strangers will betray her (like the little old flower lady), sometimes she'll do the wrong thing but get help anyway (like with the royals), and sometimes what looks like a bad situation can lead to the best assistance (like with the robber girl). The key is that she remains kind and keeps going, not being afraid to ask for help along the way. In the end, Gerda has to catch up with Kay, but is in a better situation than he is so she can help him out through kindness and reminders of childhood (see, tears and childhood song). They both made the journey, but Gerda had a better time of it and is more prepared for the world of adulthood. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I'll see myself out now.

So! I'm named after Kay. Kay is actually an anglicised version of Kaj, and because in Danish 'j' makes and 'y' sounds, and the 'a' is like the 'a' in 'fall', the correct pronunciation is Kai.

I saw an adaption where Kai and the Snow Queen call eachother "Your Majesty" and "My clever boy" constantly, even after Kai is freed (and the Queen is revealed to have been a cursed fairy). Kai even blushes when she calls him that at the end like they both know more than Gerda should know... It does have them simp vibes for sure :D
