The tragic part is that When Er Lang Shen grew up, he did the same thing to his sister and nephew. That nephew had to get help from Sun Wukong (this takes place after "Journey to the West", so Wukong is super cool with everyone now) because he is the only one who have beat Er Lang Shen in a battle before. In the version I know Wukong beat the sht out of Er Lang Shen and the nephew and his mother reunited and there is a happy ending, but still... domestic violence runs in the Jade emperor family huh?

When I was younger, my aunt told me a very different ending. The version I heard about was that the elixir was in two pills. Chang’e didn’t know it was one pill a person and took both. The first have immortality, the second the ability to fly. She began to float up into the sky and would have floated away forever if Hou yi hadn’t shot an arrow to the moon with a rope for her to grab. She literally anchored herself to the moon and eventually the flying pill wore off. But chang’e was trapped on the moon forever. Without her lover, she became so lonely she cried every night. The emperor of heaven felt bad and sent her a jade rabbit as a companion. There was also a part explaining the phases of the moon. I can’t remember that part.

She was the goddess that "Pigsy" drunkenly hit-on, while he was still the commander of the heavenly navy, which ended up getting him banished to the mortal realm and reincarnated as a pig, thus becoming the Pigsy we know. Also her pet bunny escaped to the mortal realm, shapeshifted into the princess of India, and tried to seduce Tripitaka.

@James Wang There were two Hou Yi in the ancient Chinese history/mythology, both of them were great archers so it is easy to mix them up. The one who shoot down the sun lived in the 5 King（五帝）era, and the one who become a tribe/kingdom leader lived in Xia（夏） dynasty. The Hou Yi from this video was never a leader or anything, he lives as a hunter/archer until death.

Aside from the obvious, yes. You could be granted immortality but your body continues aging. While it doesn't die it gets rather brittle with age. Another option could be the vampire route. Immortality but you must regularly consume blood in order for the effects to remain.

What you mention is an actual Greek myth. Tithonus and Aurora, goddess of Dawn. Aurora was charmed by Tithonus, and asked Zeus to make him immortal. Zeus gave it, but she forgot to ask for the 'no aging' bit. So he just got older and older. The Gods can't revoke what they did, so they turned him(it says here) into a cicada. Apparently the son of these two was Memnon of the Ethiopians. I'm only aware of this because a children's book on the Trojan War, "Greeks and Trojans' by Rex Warner, goes into it when the Ethiopians show up in the tenth year of the war for the Trojan side. I only had it because we used it in secondary school for English lessons. Kept it.

To be fair, in some iterations of the myth, the Jade Emperor order Houyi to only threaten the suns and not kill them. However, Houyi, seeing the devastation they caused in the land, got horribly pissed and decides to kill them. He would’ve killed all ten suns if it weren’t for a nearby earth god stealing one of his arrows from his quiver.

My chinese teacher told us a different version of the story last year that I think is pretty cool too. Instead of the Jade emperor getting mad at Houyi he instead rewards him by making him and Chang’e king and queen of a large kingdom. For a while everything is going well until Houyi’s newfound power starts going to his head and he becomes a corrupt and harsh ruler. He wants to be king forever so he commissions a healer to make the immortality elixir for him. Chang’e knows though that if he uses it, her subjects will have to live miserable lives under an unforgiving king, and she won’t be around to stop him. So, she drinks the elixir in an act of self sacrifice and drifts up to the moon because gods cannot live on earth. Houyi is heartbroken and changes his ways, gazing at the moon every night being the only way to see his wife.

Actually, I’m curious if Avatar was inspired by Chang’e at all. It does have heavy Chinese (and Japanese) influence in cultural design etc so that could be another connection. Oh, I just looked it up. The connection is mentioned in Wikipedia’s trivia section, and I hadn’t remembered the girl’s name is Yue (which is Chinese for moon). That’s pretty cool. 👌

In Touhou, this Hou Yi is also another Hou Yi, in a different historical legend. ZUN took some creative liberties by merging myths. Junko is relevant to the other one, I forget how it went but it's something that can probably be searched.

I'd just like to point out that this story varies a lot. the typical story that chinese kids are taught is actually very different from this one. Hou Yi and Chang E were actually mortals and were always mortals from the beginning of the story, and after hou yi shot the nine suns down, the gods actually gave him the elixir of immortality to express their gratitude.

You forgot the part in some myths where the jade emperor kinda felt bad and sent an immortal group of bunnies to keep her company and make mochi for her which is why people of Asian descent typically call it "the bunny in the moon" rather than "the man in the moon" since depending on how you look at it the mokn can also look like a bunny instead of a face. Also, that's why moon cakes as well as mochi-based desserts are served at the moon festival.

Depends on the kind of immortality. Aside from either retaining some semi-random physical age or finding out what you look like as a bloodhound, there's also various level of invulnerability. Including totally normal human vulnerability. If you're stuck with that *and* age without youth, I guess you can at least be assured that you won't end up with an eternity of dementia.

Now that I think about it, there are a lot of moon goddesses in folklore. If you think about it, it reflects on the ideal characteristics of feminism. The allure of the moon is the fact that it is admired from afar but cannot be reached by regular means. It's shrouded in darkness, giving an air of mystery. The moon is always changing waxing and waning as it moves through the sky just like the mood and temperament of a woman. Fun fact I learned from my mom and aunts, the ideal beauty for a girl to have was a round face and fair complexion because it matches traits of the moon.

The Greek and Roman mythologies are something of an anomaly within the Indoeuropean group in that respect. As for male traits for the moon... Maybe if I start with the sun. It's nurturing, guiding, sets everyone's schedules, and is beautiful but painful to look at. The moon is cold, dark, and keeps invading the sun's space. Maybe he needs to learn how to ask for directions.

The version I heard growing up is actually very different (I'm surprised tbh. It seems like the versions I know are never the 'official' ones lol). In the one I know, Hou Yi and Chang E start out as mortals and there are nine suns (that are actually portrayed as birds). He shoots them down, saves humanity, and is rewarded with two immortality pills by a god. His wife Chang E, through some kind of logic, decides that eating two pills will make her into a goddess, so she downs them by herself. She does turn into a goddess but she is also punished for her selfishness and greed by being exiled to the moon. So she lived on the moon with all her rabbits. No idea what happened to Hou Yi lol

Akira Saito the version I read was similar. The suns one night got really selfish, not wanting to take turns anymore and wanting to hog the sky, so they all went out at the same time in the morning, which resulted in what you would expect. Hou Yi shot 8 of them down so that there is only one left, saving everyone. However the mother of the suns wasn't exactly happy that he killed 8 of her 9 sun children and sent him down to Earth to wonder around for a while.

In the version I've heard, the suns (forgot whether the Jade Emporer was involved) were supposed to be the sun one at a time, taking turns, but one day they decided to just all go up at the same time. Hou Yi, who is mortal, helped the people by shooting 9 suns down, which led to him being crowned emporer. However he was really tyrannical and obessed with being immortal. So when he got 2 pills (one for himeself and his wife) His wife, Chang'e ate them both when he wasn't noticing to put a limit on his rule. And then she floated to the moon.

If I'm gonna be honest, I've never heard of this, "true end." When you mentioned a true end, I was expecting you to mention the moon rabbit that Hou Yi commissions into creating the elixer in another variant I heard of this. Upon which it banishes itself to the moon out of repentance after getting caught, and thus keeps Chang'e company in her solitude. Of course, that comes after the myth where the rabbit gains immortality after it sacrificed its own life in a character test to feed three gods disguised as monks in the woods. But I'm happy that this happier version exists, though I've only ever heard of the, "Bad End", version before, and this is coming from a girl that hates sugar-coating dark myths and fairy tales.

I heard two both start with the two as mortals, the immortality potion being it has to be shared in order for them two both forever be immortal if eaten by one person that person would become immortal but at the cost of being to light and they must remain on the moon The first one is when Hou Yi gets the immortality potion, he leaves in a safe place and forgets to tell his wife. Chang E finds it one day and drinks it, and then floats to the moon leaving a very sad Hou Yi behind The next one is where the two immortals are happily living together and they got a immortality potion as a reward for saving the earth from too many sons. They plan on splitting it on Chinese New Year so they can be forever together on that specific day. Only some random jerks/criminal duo found out and on New Years where Hou Yi is being celebrated by the peeps outside, they sneak in to steal it. To prevent an immortal criminal duo plaguing humanity, Chang E eats it and floats up to the moon. Both versions leave Hou Yi sad
