Interesting bit of trivia: The Apollo 11 astronauts were told during a transmission from Earth that according to Chinese myth, they should look out for the goddess Chang'e and the Chinese equivalent of the moon rabbit. No mention of Princess Kaguya, however. One of the astronauts responded they would "keep a close eye out for the bunny girl".

my favorite probably-myth about the Apollo missions: during a training exercise out in the Mojave desert the Apollo astronauts came across some some Native Americans who asked them what they were doing. When they told them they were training to go to the moon, one of the Natives said "Hey, our gods live up there, if you see anyone could you tell them this" and said something in his own language. Honestly, my favorite part of this story is Red's portrayal of the Emperor as as adorably dorky as any other young man trying to ask his crush out. I can totally see him panicking as he tries to work up the nerve to talk to her, and his servants trying to encourage him. Poor guy. That attempted pickup line/proposal might just be the funniest thing I've ever seen on this channel.
@wojtektaracinski79774 жыл бұрын
Ok, but there's one thing that Red forgot to mention, and it's something that's pretty off-putting, given how sad and tragic this tale is ...terrible puns and folk etymology. See, back then people liked to explain the origins of the words by looking at similarly-sounding ones, and making up stories on how one led to another. Now, add the fact that you can read words in different ways *or* break them down into individual components in Japanese (like "okami" - wolf, but also "o-kami" - a great deity. By the way, there's Kaguya reference in Okami as well), and... yeah. Like, every couple of sentences the story takes a break from this sorrowful tale of loneliness and unrequited love and goes into full Dad Humour mode with stuff like "So, they all flocked to her and cramped her suite, and that's why we call them... THE SUITORS!" or "He was outraged when his pearl-encrusted gift turned out to be fake, and that's what we call... CLUTCHING AT YOUR PEARLS!". I'm not making this up Oh, and on the topic of second dude: he actually had a good plan, and was probably closest to get Kaguya's hand. He loudly announced his trip, and then hid away for few months with hired artisans who made him a forgery of that golden tree. Sadly, in the end he was a cheapskate and didn't pay the artisans, who came knocking at Kaguya's door just as he was about to present his gift for her. So the moral of the story is: always credit your artist and don't steal others work, or it might cost you your magic moon waifu.

The tale of the Princess Kaguya is by far my favourite movie of all time and I absolutely adore the scene. It shows her humanity (something that’s usually lacking in a myth which is understandable as it is driven by phenomena and not character) showing her fight for agency in a world that is taking it from her, it shows her desire to just be loved and cherished on her own terms: for her and herself alone not for the fact she is a princess. You also see the men get their comeuppance by not choosing their words wisely, objectifying her to things that are untouchable and will only just be gawked as or used to make the man look better. God I love the movie so much!!!

The original myth doesn't really say, but in the INCREDIBLY AMAZING BEAUTIFUL GHIBLI MOVIE (seeitseeitseeit) basically she's a Bodhisattva, or at least on that level, but has gotten bored in Buddhist heaven because absolute perfection and tranquility is kinda samey. So she deliberately reincarnates as a human so that she can have some fun for awhile, only to find herself forced into the role of a proper courtly Princess, which is basically what she was trying to escape. (No, seriously, the Ghibli movie is incredibly good and I'm a little sad more people haven't seen it. I think they're either put off by the art style or the obscure folklore origins of the story, but either way, it's stunning.)

Different versions of the myth give different explanations, one is that she was sent down to Earth as a punishment for some unexplained moon crime, another is that she was sent to Earth to keep her safe during some huge lunar war.
@mofumofu90044 жыл бұрын
@@jasonblalock4429 Ghibli's Kaguya doesn't descend to earth just because she's bored and wants to have fun. She descends after becoming utterly fascinated with the lingering melancholy of the older moon lady she can not understand. Basically an entire plot device created by ghibli. *SPOILER* It's a blink and you miss it moment (and it took me a rewatch) but when Kaguya sings the sadder moon version of the maware maware song you can see two kids running towards the sea as the point of view drifts away and then a man and a younger kid watching a faint star above the sea from the cliffs, then Kaguya recalls she learned this sadder version from a melancholic woman on the moon. From all of this you can more or less infer that a celestial maidden descended to earth, fell in love with a man, had three kids, grew old while on earth and learned the folk song. Then something made her heart cry and a moon delegation came to "rescue" her (the faint "star" you see drifting away as her family helplessly watches). The moon woman lingering melancholy and the only thing she does not forget from her time on earth, the now sorrowful maware song (she adds the line "If I hear that you pine for me I will return to you"), fascinate Kaguya in the sea of sterility and enlighted monotony of the moon. She says herself she descended to earth to experience whatever the moon lady tragically tried to recall, to feel every emotion, love, joy, sorrow, anger, wonder, passion, happiness, to live among people and plants and beasts as the seasons change (all reflected in the lyrics of the original maware song), and to experience life in all its splendor even if it includes suffering. The ultimate tragedy of the movie is not just that she's taken away and forgets everything she experienced but also that on the moon she'll spend her days like the same woman that inspired her, desperately trying to remember as her family eventually passes away on earth. It's still nonetheless one of the most wonderful beautiful movies out there, about embracing life and everything it has to offer (and a bit of a middle finger to buddhism) and I absolutely agree with you in that more people should watch it. More people should watch all of Takahata movies in fact.

Ridiculous requests, yes, because of the magnitude, and also because *Kaguya already had all the treasures she was asking for.* All anyone had to do was ask "yo, you got that jeweled branch?" Technically, this is the cover story for that Kaguya. Of course, this requires the _Touhou_ syncretization of the moon with the dragon palace/Heaven to explain why she (as Omoikane [sorry for deadnaming you, Yagokoro-sensei]) was speaking to her on the moon in the first place.

Personally if I were in the Emperor’s position, head over heels in love with a moon girl, tragically heartbroken and offered a chance at immortal life via a gift left behind by the moon girl, I would have accepted the immortality on the idea that if I lived long enough, maybe, just maybe, I’d see her again. That’s just me though, and I find no fault with the Emperor’s actual response here.

Also, the Moon is commonly associated with the Pure Lands (realm of the dead and enlightened) of Buddhist fame, so Kaguya "returning to the moon and forgetting all about her life on Earth" it's quite likely a metaphor for her dying and being embraced by the oblivion of death. Couple fun facts about Mount Fuji bit at the end: according to folk etymology, the name of the mountain comes from either "immortal" (不死, fushi, fuji) - since the Emperor asked to burn the elixir here - or "abundant" (富, fu) "soldiers" (士, shi, ji), after procession of troops to deliver it. Also, the fact that elixir is still burning was sometimes used to explain volcanic activity and why there's a smoke coming from the mountain sometimes. The more you know
@Masterblader1587 жыл бұрын
But Orochimaru does have a sword inside him, the same as the Mythical version, he mentions this while fighting Naruto and Itachi. And in Naruto the myth names are used mainly for MS abilities to act as an indicator of power, Kotoamatsukami (Distinguished Heavenly Gods), able to make people do anything you tell them do, as the Ultimate Genjustsu, and with both of Sasuke's being fire related one is based of the God of the Sun and the other the actual god of fire. Kaguya is a moon princess as well... but also the dumbest character in the whole series.
@ullenlaishram7 жыл бұрын

Masterblader158 Actually, I'm pretty sure that Orochimaru's inspiration comes from a character of the same name in the "TALE OF JIRAYA THE GALLANT", who was the enemy of two SHINOBI who just so happened to be named JIRAYA and TSUNADE. So, Orochimaru is actually fairly myth-accurate compared to everything else - including the snake-road-slug trifecta - but I would watch Gaijin Goomba's Which Ninja episode on Jiraya for more info.

It's funny how drastically different the Emperor is portrayed in the Tale of the Princess Kaguya, a Studio Ghibli film. After getting rejected by her via letter, he visits her (secretly), sneaks up on her and hugs her from behind, saying that's how all women fell for him (keep in mind they never met). It was uncomfortable to watch. TL;DR: the Emperor in the Studio Ghibli film was portrayed as a creep. Feels bad.
