This video is great! I love it! I subscribed to your channel because of your videos on ancient Greek mythology. I'm greek, but we are only taught mythology at the age of 8 and only the basics. So I decided to investigate my culture myself. However, the fact that someone out there recognized a much more recent greek creation makes me very happy. Sometimes I feel like the only good thing people know for my country is Ancient Greek art, which, while true, seems to make it seem as if there isn't any more modern art produced here (like, two poets of ours have won Nobel prizes for their work!) All in all, I loved the analysis and the relation to the historical events. This particular poet happens to be one of my favorites and we have actually analyzed the first poet you mentioned at school! Keep up the great work!

Excellent presentation choices. The way you are describing Sparta and Spartan culture shows a man of knowledge. The biggest mentor and guide for the Spartans was no other than nature itself. Even the feminine beared teeth. In the rugged scenery of Southern Peloponese dwarfed by the steep mountain of Taigetos (where Spartans completed their warrior initiation) Spartans were driven by necessity to find the golden thread between understanding and honoring natural flow and experiencing human transcendence.

Glory and death, Spartans will never surrender Morning has broken, today they're fighting in the shade When arrows blocked the sun they fell, tonight they dine in hell By traitor's hand, secret passage, to their land Know his name, know his shame will last forever Sparta! I'm from Egypt, Alexandria and Cosntantine Cavafy's house is like a small museum of some sorts that I've always liked to visit whenever I was around and an interesting character he was and became for his time. There's a lot of rumours that he was homosexual I think due to him frequenting a gay bar in the area that's still in operation but anyway what was more interesting for me is that he is apparently one of the most translated poets in the world. When you depart for Ithaca wish for the road to be long Full of adventure and knowledge.
@scottrauch12617 жыл бұрын
If he was frequently going to the gay bar those where probably more rumor. Just saying.
@jasondoe25967 жыл бұрын
Ather Tawfik, I don't know anything about any bar, but his homosexuality is considered a well-established fact by those who have studied his numerous erotic poems (although I don't think he explicitly mentions homosexual relationships in any of them - it's a veiled, between-the-lines thing). Of course, in his day and age (born in 1863), homosexuality was not something he could (or would like to) publicly admit. Also, apparently he's considered very difficult to translate in other languages, due to his idiosyncratic language - his wordplay, subtle nuances etc. will get lost. This of course applies to all kinds of poetry, but in his case it's more severe.
@athertawfik69427 жыл бұрын
tell me about it, people here are religious in general and frown on homosexuality it's not something that you would talk about freely even though Egypt was a lot more secular before than now even with the government's crackdown on the Muslim brotherhood, it's more political than religious or anything else But you're right once I googled him those erotic poems are some of the first things that come up Man, Even Arabian Muslim and non-Muslim poets wrote a lot of erotic stuff about drinking and stuff, wish they taught this shit in schools lmfao But yeah Ironically that gay bar is unofficially called Sheikh Ali now and is still frequented by everyone gay and not But yeah Alexandria is a weird place, you walk down the street and you see old french buildings a huge synagogue, street vendors and Liqour stores, Mosques and the Mediterranean and that's just in a single street

I am greek and I am greatfull to you. Not many know kavafi outsaide of greece and few care about him in greece but he was a great poet. I am glad that someone outside of greece has been inspired by him. When people ouside of greece hear the word greece, they think of ancient greece, mykonos and the economic crisis . It is refreshing and a pleasant surprise for me that someone is familiar with another aspect of our culture. PS: If you have the time, check a poem called Helen out written by Sheferis.I love this poem of his. It takes inspiration from Eurepedes' Helen. It is the realization of a man that he and thousands of others spent ten years or died at war for an empty tunic, a Helen.

A way of life that implied slavery on a scale that dwarfs virtually any other society and was an inspiration to Adolf Hitler for his treatment of virtually everyone he didn't like. I have a hard time waxing nostalgic for that, I'd say Alexander's impact on history was more substantial. Certainly for Europe and the middle east which basically impacted the entire planet over time.

I think you really missed the spot on the last one. Kavafis's point was that the Spartans' sort of 'pompous' absence from Alexander's conquests may have preserved their pride, but their role in history vanished after that. Sure, history will always remember their stand against the Persians, but through their small-mindedness, their city vanished in obscurity. This is what Kavafis points out - is keeping your petty pride worth not being part of something great?
@jasondoe25967 жыл бұрын
makouras, agreed - that's the usual interpretation of the poem, and what I got as well. I was surprised by Blue's interpretation, although I don't mind alternative viewpoints.
