I took my mother to Koyasan when I was living in Osaka 92-94. We were served dinner in our room. Vegetarian meal of numerous small dishes and Kirin and rice. So great. My mom got lost going to the bathroom lol. One of the monks had to help her but they couldn't understand each other. The chanting I'm the morning was amazing. everyone should do this in Japan. Those bean pillows are something out of the Spanish Inquisition 😂

This was so nice. Morning is such a beautiful and peaceful time to be awake, whether in an urban or rural environment. Just... waking up so early sucks so much!! I did the shukubo experience at Koya-san. Same general area, I guess? I feel like it was about an hour by train south of Osaka, southwest of Nara. A couple of transfers to older and older train models, then a cable car, and finally a bus that drove along some very steep roads into the town with roughly 80 or so temples, many of which offered shukubo accommodations. I stayed there a few times, actually. I remember one trip I befriended another traveler and we went out after dinner to a local restaurant and got karaage and had a few beers. I guess that was a little naughty after our truly delicious vegetarian meals, but it was part of the fun at the time! I love it there at Koya-san, it was so peaceful. And there is so much history there. There's a massive 1000+ year old cemetery with a lot of famous historical people. You might think it would be creepy, but it was so peaceful and fascinating, nestled in amongst these massive cedar trees. Lots of ancient stonework. A volunteer tour guide will walk with you through it and give you a lot of historical information. I highly recommend Koya-san to anyone who is interested (not sponsored, I swear!). If you do go, you can book online. Just search Koya-san and you'll find info about it.

I did not expect to hear Hefeklöße xD I personally prefer something similar called Dampfnudel, they're crunchy and salty at the bottom
@wasabigirl20048 ай бұрын
Are 'Hefeklöße' the same as 'Dampfnudeln'? I only ever made/ate 'Hefeklöße' in (North) Germany.
@LaNoir.8 ай бұрын
@@wasabigirl2004 I'm not that versatile in german cuisine but I think normal Hefeklöße are just steamed while Dampfnudeln are steamed in a pan until all water has evaporated, creating a crunchy crust on the bottom. Hefeklöße also often have filling and are more on the sweeter side while Dampfnudeln can be sweet but more often are savory-salty and eaten on the side to potato soup and vanilla dipping sauce
@LaNoir.8 ай бұрын
tldr: it's similar but not the same, like an onigiri and a sushi roll have similar ingredients, but are made and taste slightly different
