I headed up to The Pinnacles located in the Kauaeranga Valley and Coromandel Forest Park and camped overnight at the Dancing Camp Campsite. This was the first weekend of winter in NZ (June 2023) and it got wet! We wanted to summit for sunrise but the weather got in the way and was clouded out in the morning.
Route:
Day 1 - Kauaeranga Road end to Dancing Camp campsite via Webb Creek Track. 6km. Just over 3hrs.
Day 2 - Dancing Camp campsite to Kauaeranga Road end via Webb Creek Track. 6km. Just under 3hrs.
My gear for this overnight hike: lighterpack.co...
The new SECOND-HAND gear I tested:
Salomon Quest Hiking boots - great first impression but noticed they have given me heel blisters more than my old boots even after breaking them in.
Torpedo7 Mamaku Adventure tent - heaps of space for two people, gear makes it a little tight but can fit at your feet. Good-sized vestibule for shoes and wet gear. The weight is standard for a two-person hiking tent so if you divide the weight it is reasonable.
NEW gear I tested:
Torpedo7 Hikelite 5 inflatable sleeping mat - comfortable but need to rotate often (I sleep on my side). These are NOT insulated and you feel it. I would only take these again on a mid-summer trip - if you're using them only in very warm weather then they're good value for money. Any colder, don't risk your safety for a cheap deal.
