Im an astrophotographer. The green tinge to the sky is called airglow. Basically, the night sky is never truly dark. Cosmic rays striking the atmosphere, collisions between the atoms that make up the atmosphere, and the changes in atoms and photons in the atmosphere cause a slight glow in the sky. In laymans terms, the Earth's atmosphere is glow in the dark. We just dont see it because the light that we create obscures it. You need to be under a sky that is essentially untouched by light pollution to see it. Unfortunate you've not got to see the aurora. Keep trying mate. Its truly a wonderful sight. As the great Carl Sagan once said, astronomy is a humbling and character building experience. Safe travels, and clear skies.

I went to iceland last february and stayed in a glass igloo to see the northern lights, it cost thousands, didnt see them because it was cloudy, got back to the UK, and the news said that when we were in iceland, you could see the northern lights in the UK …… Almost had a stroke. Still haven’t seen them.

I don’t normally comment here on KZbin. I’ve been a subscriber to your channel for a good while now and love seeing your adventures. This adventure however has really hit home for me. See, I have been with my partner now for 20 years and the one place she has always wanted to go is Finland to a glass igloo to see the aurora and as much as I hate the cold and the snow, I have always said that I would do it one year. 3 weeks ago however our world was tuned upside down with the news that she has stage 4 colorectal cancer and will be starting chemotherapy in the new year so it looks as though we will have to suspend the idea for some time. Such a shame you didn’t get the true experience but it does look like a beautiful place and I too would have been happy with the just being there. Hopefully we see Christmas 2024 and she is well enough for us to give this a try. Thank you for sharing this insight and look forward to where ever you end up next. ⛄️ 🚆 🧊
