The XPT is a shadow of what once was. We use to have The Southern Aroura which was a luxury train with sleepers and white linen service, dining and club cars. The XPT is a tired old train. Time for a classic upgrade!!!

The Southern Aurora was wonderful - I travelled in it 5 times in the 1970s, and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences in my whole life, and I am very sorry it is now gone. You could have a compartment to yourself if you were travelling alone, called a roomette, and to be sure, it was small, but private and comfortable. I have not been on the XPT, but I understand that it has no roomettes, which is a serious turn-off for me. I presume that, if you travel alone, you have to share a double compartment (a twinette) with a stranger, which is not something I would want to do in the least.

Stand-up comedy and comedy in general is the ultimate form of free speech, because you get to poke holes in all the pretentious bubbles politicians and pundits and popes and pretenders try to float over our heads. Good luck with eveything, i am also a muso, i play for the London Symphony Orchestra. Was that a Cello case i spotted on your back? (I play Timpani/Drums/Percussion). Hope the concert went well. Hope you enjoyed the "First Class" experience. Those trains you got (XPT) Express passenger train. are 42 years old. There is a "Platinum Class" which includes free cochroaches! Glad you enoyed the men making your bed for you. Did you have aweet deeams?? 💕💕💕

This is the first time I saw your channel. I love how you turned a disappointment into an adventure, and with such enthusiasm and gusto. As you can possibly tell, by the single ticket left, the XPT is a popular rail service, despite its misgivings and age. One thing I like about some travel is it's an opportunity to switch off from devices, even if for a few hours, and rediscover the joy of travel for its own sake. I'll be doing this adventure later this year.

Viktoria, glad to hear you made it (just)! Early this year (2023), I had to make three return trips in rather quick succession between Canberra and Melbourne using the XPT (changing to and from the XPT at Goulburn station), but in my case, they were all daytime trips. Those XPT trains are about forty years old, and it shows in that they lack WiFi and USB charging points. They _can_ sometimes pick up extra speed and make up for lost time during the trip. On one of my trips northward, we arrived at Junee station 18 minutes ahead of schedule. They had to stick to the timetable and couldn't depart Junee ahead of schedule, so they announced that they would let us out onto the platform to stretch our legs for those 18 minutes, but warned us not to leave the station so that we would not risk being left behind! When the XPT arrives at Sydney or Melbourne, there's not much turnaround time before the train has to depart again whether it's for a daytime or overnight run, so a late arrival probably means a late departure because they still have to clean the train in the meantime.
@NonStopTravelVV

@@NonStopTravelVV new trains, CAF Civity, are supposed to be coming 2026/7, after lengthy delays. At this stage, Jan 2024, there are no sleeper options. I wish we could have trains as good as you do in Europe, but the government always goes with the cheapest option here. Rail isn't as valued here as it is in Europe.

Nice review sometimes it's good to take the slower journey and just enjoy the whole experience for what it is! Typical Jetstar though there great when they get away and do a perfectly fine job of getting form A to B for a no thrills price but it wouldn't be the first time I've had the dreaded "Engineering Requirements" email at the 11th hour. I got the email around 9pm the night before a morning flight back to Perth from Sydney last year . Lucky I even saw the email before I went to bed . Rather than than just rebooking you on Qantas they offered ridiculous indirect flights only via Melbourne which would take over 18 hours!

Definitely not the most modern. The power cars date from 1982, and the sleeping cars from 1992. The design dates from 1975, as they're an Australian version of the British HST trains. They were due to be retired this year, but their replacements are still at least two years away from hitting the rails, so they soldier on. Part of why the journey takes so long is that it's 90km further by train than by road. Also it's quite rough due to poor track in parts. The price charged is the standard for a sleeping berth on the route, regardless of when you book.
@NonStopTravelVV

It will depend on when the NSW government and CAF (Construccines Auxilar y Ferrocarriles) España sort out their differences. It will be a large-ish fleet to replace the XPT fleet, and the Xplorer and Endeavour regional railcar sets. As well as most of the XPT fleet being over 40 years old, the other types are 30 years old, and near the end of their economic life as well. One difference, track condition depending, is that they will have a maximum speed of 200kmh, much faster than the XPT's 160kmh and 145kmh for the others.

This should be a 3 hour trip : The fundamental problem with HSR is that the rail gauge of 1435 mm is far too narrow (as the rail cars a 3040 mm in width) - so the trains have to follow a (very expensive) virtual straight line - or tip over! This is a classic “5 Monkey Experiment” scenario - “we have always done it (incorrectly) that way”!! The so-called “Standard” rail gauge is only 1435 mm (which was actually engineered for 5’ width (mining) rail cars - and not for 8’ 0” rail cars! Brunel (in the CE 1830 - 40s) came up with a 7’ 0” rail “Broad” gauge that was perfect for 8’ 0” width rail cars - as this was far more stable and far larger load capacity (and lower maintenance) than the narrower gauges! All hell broke loose and Stephenson eventually pressed the UK Parliament for the “UK Standard Rail Gauge Act” CE 1846 to deliberately / deceptively eliminate Brunel’s excellent “Broad” gauge competing with his then commonly used “standard” gauge. In the CE 1920-30s Train cars became even wider to 10’ 0” (3040 mm) - and far more unstable as they were still using “Standard” gauge (1435 mm) that was less than half the width (3040 mm) of the cars. Would you drive road car with an 1800 mm width that has barely an 850 mm wheel gauge? No! Well only in a straight line!! The correct rail gauge for 3040 (10’ 0”) rail cars is 2540 mm (8’ 4”) “Wide” gauge rail! With this “Wide” gauge, these rail cars will be very stable and the HSR “Wide” rail lines do not have to be dead straight (as per HSR using the incorrect “Standard” Gauge rails)! This correctly engineered “Wide Gauge” rail line in Australia can then be applied for about 90% of the way using the pre-existing rail easements at a small fraction of the cost of making completely new rail easements and tracks. WDYT ?! 😊

Yes it must be fun inside of the sleep car. I have never been inside the sleeper car because we don't have enough money and we always catch the day train to wagga wagga which is around half way between Sydney And Melbourne. So what is the point of being in the day sitter. But when i am 14 or 15 i will go to Sydney... BY MY SELF at night time from southern cross to Sydney Central. I can't wait for another XPT video and maybe when i go by myself i will get a sleeper car because my mum goes to work every Tuesday or Thursday stating from may :) so i should be able to experience the sleeper car once before they get replaced in like 2026 or something. :( Anyways your review was funny and especially when you were talking about the train being late. I will record a few XPT videos on my other account over the winter holidays which is when i will go to wagga wagga again. Have done many train journeys in Europe while on holidays, (I just don't trust myself driving on the "wrong" side of the road, I would hate to cause an accident). Very enjoyable, travelling through Italy, Switzerland and France by train. Got caught up in a train strike in France on one trip, that was stressful and chaotic. Have not travelled long distance in Australia yet though, shame it could be fun. Enjoyable video again. 😊

Haha i thought why does your name sound so familiar 😊😊😊😊 and then I realised you’ve ordered the t-shirts 😊 And yes train rides in Europe are more exciting I think with them mountains and lakes! Then again I didn’t get to see any scenery on this trip so maybe it’s exciting too! I’m so glad you enjoyed my video 😊

Its worth bearing in mind that aviation is how we travel in Australia. Trains are regional connections.

Is your accent German? Would you ever consider doing another train trip video in your native language with subtitles, would love to hear. These trains are over 40 years old and getting replaced next year, they unfortunately are getting rid of sleeper compartments based on the current plans but hopefully they can be resurrected. I think they should just be permanent bunk beds with 4 or even 6 per cabin. And they should make it cheaper by cutting costs for staff and all the added extras: -just let people make their own beds and give them sheets+pillows as they board -make everyone that wants food go to the dining car and get it themselves -push up the prices of flights in any corridor where a sleeper train option is available (Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane-Cairns are all linked by night trains), use the extra money generated by the flight tax to make the train cheaper and upgrade the tracks

Those are amazing ideas…hopefully they will really keep the sleeping option otherwise the overnight train ride wouldn’t be fun at all. And yes I’m from austria so my accent is Austrian/German. And thank you for the suggestion! More train (and ship) videos are in the planning stage 😊 thank you for watching!

@@NonStopTravelVV Yeah see Austria is doing a great job at the moment of building Neubaustrecken and Schnellfahrstrecken and investing WAY MORE into their rail system than Australia is, Australia does some things well like new Metro lines in Sydney+Melbourne+Brisbane and new high speed rail between Sydney and Newcastle might be on the way, but it is still nowhere close to enough for regional lines, Austria is much better here.
