Finally! Welcome to Melbourne Max! So lovely having you here! ❤

Many Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees arrived to Australia via Springvale back in the late 70s to early 80s after the wars. Back when I was a kid "fresh off the boat" there was not one Asian grocery store in Springvale. Finding a single Vietnamese ingredient was a challenge. Things have changed and over the years various shops and businesses have sprung up in Springvale. Now it's one of the main places to go for Vietnamese and Cambodian food. The bánh mì there is one of the best, as you can tell from the lines.

Welcome to Springvale Max!! You went to the right pho shop, it is probably the most popular one in Springvale. Bun Bun bakery is also known as one of the best banh mi shops in Melbourne as-well, enjoy your time here!

Yeh, I can never get into bun bun because the queue is too long for my available time. I usually end up going to Tabac, which also makes some of the best bahn mi I've had.

One thing I have noticed is in Australia Banh Mi shops use short thick baguettes (which means you really have to pack in the ingredients). Here in Canada they are much longer (a little narrower). I have noticed in the US a lot of Vietnamese restaurants use jalapenos (not Thai chilis) and sometimes in Australia too. Here in Canada they only use Thai chilies and my favourite Banh Mi shop uses scotch bonnet (big bonus)! That said, Australia has more variety in their fresh ingredients and Banh Mi styles. Tons of Vietnamese shops too!
@trcs30794 ай бұрын
This is most likely due to the ingredients available based on geography. USA I can understand using jalapenos, as South America's is close. Where as in Australia, which has connections to Australasia, we get an abundance of ingredients due to our closeness to Asia and our warmer season, which favours decent crop growth.
@travis12714 ай бұрын
jalapeños are easier to get in u.s also the u.s has many kids of banh mi aswell
@skatingcanuck98374 ай бұрын
@@trcs3079 LA has one of the largest Thai populations outside of Thailand. They definitely have access to Thai chilis. Jalapenos have very little spice. I think it is due to cost efficiency/ cultural differences.

As an Australian I wish narrower French style baguettes were more commonly used here

I live in Sunshine, which is another right across from Springvale and a heavily influenced area with asian culture. Heaps of good local food places. So much so, that "Poons", a restaurant I love to go to, moved from Footscray to 10 mins walk away from me. So from a 15min car ride, to 10mins walk. Amazing haha.

For me Melbourne banh mi is like ones you get in Hanoi for the reason is that I find that they add extra filling eg chả lụa, vegetables etc but ones from Sydney are like in Saigon because they add extra pate and like to experiment with different filling eg in Saigon i found a vendor who sold banh mi with some bò lá lốt in it, both have a thing in common, the baguettes are both delicious.. on another note about both Melbourne and Sydney banh mi, i find when you buy them the banh mi gets soggy super fast, its not as crunchy and pillowy soft like the ones you find in Vietnam
