Here is MY theory on this...The popularity of any artist/band comes from TWO elements: 1) Talent, 2) Image. For example, look at Elton John and Billy Joel, both hugely talented, but Elton also played on an image (loud clothes, performance antics, etc.), while Billy Joel was all about talent, very little "image" beyond some nice music videos back in the day. With that being said, "my" definition of an overrated artist or band is one that relies mostly on image and little on talent. So, by that very definition, prog will rarely have an overrated band, since prog by its very nature is so much based on talent and skill of the musicians. You can't fake prog and get very far with prog fans, but pop artists do it all the time. Therefore, you are 100% correct Scot, there really are NO overrated prog bands, IMHO. Tons of UNDERrated ones though. PS: Great shirt!!!

I surmise a perspective from this video that I appreciate: That, when a band actually creates an couple of really good records (or one.. or 7).. that you can then just forget about trying to "rate" their general or holistic output (if that were even sensible to begin with). Because, How many bands pull that off? Even one great record? Much less more.. and plus potentially touring behind those great record(s). That's bloody rare.. If a band does this, they can quit, buy a scarf set or "sell out", even if it hurts our feelings (that's our fault). They reached tenure. :-) And of course they'll catch flack from people wasting their time to speak about the releases that were not as strong, even after all the lifeblood given to the listeners.

I agree with your take that none of the ten are overrated. I think that, perhaps, the degree to which a person may feel a prog band is underrated correlates with that person's musical knowkedge. After all, simple rhythms and catchy, pleasant melodies are preferred by those who do not want to or cannot put the work in to understand the more complex and dissonant work. Prog can be challenging, after all, and calling a band overrated when it has proven success may just be a cop out. 12:55

I would like to hear the argument that Dark Side is overrated. It represents one of the big moments in my musical education in the late 70s when I first encountered it. Having not listened to it for more than a couple of years I put it on quite recently, and I can say quite categorically that it does not yet represent a part of my juvenile self that I look back on with any kind of scorn. And I was a mixed up emotional mess for the first 30 years of my life! I think Andy Edwards - much as I am amused by and enjoy his content - he is something of a musical snob.

I'd rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South. I'm damned proud of who I am and where I'm from, but I hate the term 'Southern rock.'" What do you think? I never hear anyone refer to them as prog, but you know, there's something to be said for it. Listen to Eat a Peach. The song Les Brers in A Minor is definitely prog. And how about Mountain Jam? The whole idea of being overrated is a bit ridiculous, especially regarding music (which is so subjective). What most people mean when they say a band is overrated is that they just don't like a band that is liked by a whole lot of people. In general, bands are 'rated' exactly where they should be, because people like the music they like, and that determines that general consensus of opinion and the overall 'rating'. If someone really loves a band that has been deemed 'overrated' by someone on KZbin, is that person wrong for loving that band? NO, of course not! These bands are 'rated' high because people love their music! Just because some people may not like it does not make it overrated, it just means that person's view is in the minority. Hey, it's OK to like what you like, and not like what you don't.

I think context can have a lot to do with whether or not a Prog band is overrated. ELP would be a classic example. While legions of arena obsessives got off on their theatrical manipulation of classical music through rock as well as sheer grandiosity, in certain sectors of the rock world they were seen as bloated, hyper-virtuosic simps who were the final word on Prog. Speaking as a survivor of their Works tour, I can still appreciate some of their early music. But then, other music they made would send me running to my CD collection for a Stooges album to heal my psyche. They've always been a problem for me.
@jhillst9 ай бұрын
Agreed. I think ELP started out great, but they ran out of steam pretty quickly, and unlike Genesis and Yes, they failed to adapt to the changes in the music scene toward the end of the '70s. (ATTW3 and Tormato may be lackluster albums, but they're nowhere near as embarrassing as Love Beach.)

When I hear "OverRated prog" I think did that band have more proggy songs than pop songs or the standard 4x4 timing and cut don't song times to the 3min duration. Are the bands great at music and their instuments. Proggy bands have to have great real musicians that write and play more complex songs with a wider ary of instruments. Over rated would be too popular for their content. Take Vanilla Ice, he'd be over rated if he was considered the best rap artist of the 90s. But when I hear Pink Floyd, Genesis yes and the Imperial of Prof Rush, these guys are masters of modern music, no matter how popular they are or get, they mastered their instuments, their music writing and most importantly they influenced most of what you hear on rock radio today. So no way is Rush over rated. Even Eddie Van Halen said it best when asked what it feels like to be the greatest guitarist alive, he said, " Idk ask Alex Lifeson!". The more I read these comments, the more I am convinced that the concept of „overrrated“ makes no sense for music. How do people dare to judge the taste of other people? For me the Rolling Stones are overrrated, really, what is the fuss about them? I don‘t like their music! So that means they are overrrated? Probably not, otherwise they would not have had the success they had…. so the whole concept of „overrated“ makes no sense… Overrated can only and always be subjective, there is no objective concept in music for that term!

Pink Floyd for sure... Also Gentle Giant. I remember when I was just starting out in prog I couldn't go anywhere without being asked if I'd listened to them yet, though I only followed through within the past month....HAIL As for the bigger bands, they're not overrated as a whole (especially given the fact that Prog is still somewhat underground) but there are a few eras in the career of each that get more attention than others. Take, for example, some of the bands in my PROG HEXAGON: The #1 most overrated Genesis album is Selling England. There, I said it. Unlike Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, Selling England took me a while to acclimate to. For Yes, I'd only call the stretch from Fragile to Relayer overrated because of Howe worshippers who have thrown praise to that era like no tomorrow. (Obvs, nothing against the man.) At least I'm with the crowd with regards to the Moodies and ELP (although I do like SUR LA MER and Love Beach).

Thought-provoking album, but it's so weird to me that a narrative about a guy turning into a Nazi through self-isolation after becoming a rock star because of his rough childhood is SOMEHOW one of the greatest albums ever made...?), but there isn't really a band in the genre, on the whole, that I could say counts. Prog, by its very definition, is a niche genre and meant to be both underground in its exposure (how "rated" it is) and tongue-in-cheek in terms of how seriously we should take it, so there can't really be a band that is "overrated" as a whole in the genre. But if I had to pick ONE classic band that I think is rated higher by others than I'd personally rate them, it's Camel. I LOVE Andy Latimer's guitar playing, and I think "Mirage" is a fantastic record. But I could honestly never get into anything else they put out. I tried so, so hard to enjoy Camel, but other than "Mirage", their music consistently left me feeling empty. Which is a shame because they inspired some of my favourite modern bands like Opeth.

I totally agree that no prog bands are overrated. There's probably some bands that are overrated in the prog community though. But a bigger question would be, what are the most UNDERrated prog bands? Not much to add that other commenters have not already brought up I think it was a foregone conclusion that there are no overrated prog bands. I think Kansas and Gentle Giant are definitely the most underrated but that's no fun. To me there is one overrated prog band and that is Genesis. Even in their heyday, when they were "my band" I knew that Tony Banks couldn't hold a candle to Rick Wakeman, Michael Rutherford was a weak imitation of Chris Squire and Steve Howe could play circles around Steve Hackett. I had a hard time defending them against hardcore Yes and ELP fans. Phil Collins remains, to this day, my favorite drummer of all time. When Peter Gabriel left and they lost their progressive edge I lost interest in them and still don't understand their popularity as a pop band, but who am I to argue with the hoi polloi? Pink Floyd maybe too because they relied on 2 or 3 chords for most of their songs but are they really a prog band or just a sardonic pop outfit?

If we narrow the scope to what gets thrown around specifically within prog circles, I think Pink Floyd, Tool, Caligula’s Horse, and Dream Theater are the only bands that get talked about a bit too much. And I have reasons for each of anyone cares: Pink Floyd can be boiled down to the world’s best Psych rock band and while their music is amazing, it doesn’t feel right to stand them up next to bands like King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, or Gentle Giant when those bands were so forward thinking. Tool has a very unique sound but to me it all blends together and isn’t as captivating as many people say. Dream Theater is a band I love but their best works have been watered down by several mediocre releases. And Caligula’s Horse is all over “prog metal” forums and the subreddit despite sounding to my ear like a jazzless, weaker Haken.

"Overrated" is one of those buzzwords that makes my hackles rise a bit, honestly. For one, artistic taste in any medium is always going to be subjected so someone is always going to disagree with any one person's list. For another, if enough people say something is overrated that it becomes a common thing to say... is it actually overrated? And while you can say the same with underrated, at least that brings positive attention to something that can use it rather than just dunking on something you know other people like to look better than them. And that's not even getting into the nuance that people forget that something being overrated doesn't mean it's not still good. Like, are there popular things I don't get the appeal of? Of course. But it takes a lot more than just not being my cup of tea before I feel comfortable saying others shouldn't like it, and then I'll have a lot more specific criticism than it being "overrated". As for popular prog I don't like as much as others do... I dunno, I don't get Genesis that much, Nursery Cryme in particular I just don't remember much other than the production being thin, maybe another listen will help? And while I do really appreciate that The Wall is a good and important album, it's not one I find myself enjoying as much as other Floyd albums - the story is a bit haphazardly told at points and a bunch of tracks feel pretty fillery to me. While I'll admit Neal Morse's religious focus chafes with me a bit, there are a lot more things I didn't get about Snow compared to the first five Beard albums. (Or even something even more overtly religious - Transatlantic's Stranger in Your Soul, which I actually kinda like despite being about as annoyed by religion as it gets... Weird. I will say I'm at least willing to give Morse a chance since he doesn't seem as much into the parts of religion I'm more actively against, at least not publicly, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have reservations.) And I balked at Caravan on first listen, but in my quest to explore more different prog I just heard "Where But For Caravan Would I?" for the first time and really enjoyed it, so maybe I'm coming around? Who knows? Either way, none of it's overrated, because even if it's not for me I can appreciate that others like it, and hey, if someone came along and said they find music I like overrated, I'd be annoyed by that, and I'd just rather not do that to them either.
@TheProgCorner9 ай бұрын
I hear you about Neal. He claims to have lost about 50% of his fan base when he converted to Christianity. But he didn’t care. He did what he wanted to do - commercial success be damned!!! That’s pretty Prog.
@SomniRespiratoryFlux9 ай бұрын
@@TheProgCorner I mean, the comments about Neal's religion were a fairly minor part, just one I felt the need to overexplain and overqualify because it's such a sticky subject and I have strong opinions on it that aren't really about Morse (or even his religion in and of itself, but the broader social influence it has that I don't have any specific evidence he supports anyway). And like I said, Snow had other things about it that didn't really work for me even aside from the ending swerve, and I've liked songs both from Morse (the aforementioned Stranger in Your Soul) and from other bands like Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Pattern-Seeking Animals, Symphony X, Seventh Wonder, and so on that are pretty strongly Christian in some way or another. And even if I find myself rolling my eyes at something like Along For the Ride, there's still stuff in there that's really thoughtful and introspective on the matter like Blind Faith or In the Name of God. Ultimately, I agree that I don't have to agree with everything about a song to like it (2112 being the obvious example), but it can still be a strike against it and enough of that at once will eventually become hard to look past. And I'd probably not actually care if there weren't the broader issues, and even with that I'm still giving him a chance at what I call the "Veggietales Zone" of still being well-done enough to enjoy despite the explicit religious messaging, even if it's not my favorite thing ever. (And my first exposure to him was in Flying Colors and I love all three of those albums, in any case. Especially Second Nature.) I don't really want to bring this up again, I just feel the need to fully explain it now that it has, since you can be pretty defensive of him and I wanted to make it clear I came by my feelings on him honestly. (To make it clear - I have practically nothing bad to say about the first five Beard albums, the first two Transatlantic albums, or any of the Flying Colors albums; Snow didn't really land for me even aside from the ending; I listened to the short version of The Absolute Universe a while ago and liked some of it, but got caught off guard at the ending and generally don't remember much, but I'm willing to try it again; I haven't heard anything else but I'm aware going into it what to expect so it should be fine - though I'll probably just acknowledge that the Testimony albums I probably won't get anything out of and stick to the ones I can just enjoy as a story like Similitude/Adventure, Joseph, Transatlantic, and so on.) I hope that all makes enough sense, and doesn't come off like an attack or a whine.

within the scope of music fans and listeners, most Prog isn't really overrated on a larger scale given it's often very obscure and unknown. On a smaller scale, and just within Prog fans, some of the names like Van Der Graaf and Camel I would say are overrated to some. Pink Floyd is slightly overrated given the enormous influence and importance they had on music, yet they released albums like The Wall and The Final Cut..even Dark Side is annointed the greatest record ever made, but I don't know if it really deserves such constant high praise. I think describing Pop-Rock era Genesis as overrated is totally subjective. I guess by going down the more commercial route, they put themselves on a pedestal and open to being knocked off it by the Prog fraternity, but they’re very much a gateway band into Progressive music. I know a number of folks who got into the Pop era stuff first and then went backwards into their discography. Prog fans now. A much more interesting subject to me are those underrated Prog bands that have material in their discography that crosses genres and should be more widely heard and enjoyed by the masses. I mean, why the hell are Big Big Train still playing tiny venues? It’s almost criminal that that band isn’t more widely known outside of the Prog sphere.

OK. I get your point. Well considered. How about now putting to rest the use of the label “prog” when there are a majority of instances that easily fit into another category? Like Ultravox clearly being more of a new wave synth pop band? Don’t get me wrong. They’re great in that genre. Just barely prog, and that in only a handful of songs. Similarly, I find the category prog-adjacent lazy and rarely used by true historians. It needs to be discarded. If anyone can do this you can, Scot. And it might help with your healing need to stop calling things prog because you like them. Use criteria like this: Complicated structures, unique harmony, adventurous melodies, daring instrumentation, virtuosity, overall minimizing 4/4 and non human beats. Even with this analysis there is room for XTC but easy elimination of Traffic, for instance. This will be controversial and place you higher as the king arbiter of Prog promotion!
