Here are 10 really popular artists that I hate, or at least hate things about them. Some I own all their CD's and some I don't own any. But all these artists in some way make me cringe.

Very entertaining video Alan. Although I never like to use the word hate, I know what you mean. Some people will like artists we don't like and vice-versa. You know, some of the criticisms you make against some of these bands, some people would respond that the Stones are no better, hanging on longer than they should, replacing Charlie rather than calling it quits. Then there's the "They haven't made a good album since Tattoo You over 40 years ago" or some would substitue Tattoo You with Exile, or Sticky Fingers. Regardless, as Stones fans, we've heard it all, and personally I don't care what people say, I love the Stones so deeply, and I can be crticial of them, but they continue to touch me in ways that I sometimes don't even expect. I'm always discovering something new with the Stones. So, I agree with most of your list as is, especially Dave Matthews, never liked him even though I had a buddy in the mid-2000's that raved about him. I'm a little hesitant about your choice of Queen, but I'll say they aren't a go-to band for me even though some people rank them higher than the Stones in the pantheon of rock, at least Freddie Mercury as the best front man ever. To each his own, but nobody beats Mick Jagger as a front man. Another band I am critical of is Pink Floyd, many great songs and some great albums, but their early post-Syd Barrett albums are filled with lots of noisy, rambling, non-coherent musicianship. I hate it when songs get lost in noise for the sake of showing off technical abilities, just doesn't do it for me. The Grateful Dead are another band I don't care for. Besides a few good songs, this is a dull band for me, not interesting at all. On a Stones note, I always thought their bailing out at Altamont (their own home turf) was never emphasized enough about how it contributed to the chaos of that day, but that's a debate for another day. Another band I really do not like is Kiss, too much gloss and theatrics and very few songs I like, and the make-up shtick (that's gone on and on for years) just doesn't do it for me. Compare them to Alice Cooper, the first band (front man) to have outragesous make-up and over-the-top theatrics, Kiss just doesn't measure up to Alice Cooper at all, not even close. Alice was original, with numersous great songs and albums, and unlike Kiss, seeing Alice live with his make-up is an essential part of the act. He still wears it well. It just doesn't seem to get old. Then there's Neil Young, never like his voice. I acknowledge his accomplishments but it's kind of like Geddy Lee of Rush, just a voice I don't care for. Also, Neil Young's guitar sound wears thin for me, with solos that often repeat from one song to another, sometimes rambling on. I like his original work of the early 70's, but not much since then, but his voice, even back then, was always an issue for me. Thaks for a fun video, Alan. In the end, to each his own, whatever turns you on.

Thanks for your awesome passionate comments. As you so well said, music is to each his own. I like some of Kiss's early albums, but like you said, I never take them seriously and certainly not in the same league as the classic Alice Cooper years. I love your comments on Floyd - its a really interesting topic that few cover and I'm in full agreement with you. Those early albums, not including Piper, really don't have much in the way of songs - Water's actually admitted it. They only became "songwriters" much later on blooming of course on Dark Side but their run from Dark Side onward is pretty exceptional, except I don't care for Final Cut album. Neil Young to me is like Prince - way too many albums released, it never stops, I can't keep up and stopped years ago. No filter with him - just pushing the material out, while he's alive which is very cool, but too much for me. I actually like the Dead alot - but I'm in the minority that I like the Studio albums. The live jamming goes on and on - and really oftentimes nowhere. Thanks so much again.

I cant get past your views on Queen. If you are a prog fan I cant believe you dont enjoy AT LEAST the debut and Queen II? I agree they lost me by the early 80's, but IMO the deep tracks are more impressive than the big hits. Death on Two Legs! Stone Cold Crazy! Fight From the Inside! Its Late etc etc

I did multiple videos on Queen. I did an experiment. I bought all their original Queen albums (except I'm missing Queen II). I listened to every album between 5 to 8 times and then did an in depth review. You may want to see those. I did it with an open mind. I don't actually hate them. Their unique, great musicians and studio alchemists. But beyond their greatest hits, which somehow have made them the biggest, most valuable band in the world (absurd compared to The Beatles, Stones, Who and Zeppelin), they' catalog is good at best.

I like most of the artists on this list, especially Queen, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Billy Joel since they are some of my favorites. I listened to the Rush album Moving Pictures before and like it. Coldplay I also like, I've listened to their first three albums all the way through and like them. Toto did great opening for Journey when I saw them, I also listened to all their albums at least once. Foo Fighters, I like and have listened to their first three albums all the way through, but in my opinion, you can't have them without Nirvana. The artist I least care for on this list is Motley Crue, Vince Neil accidentally killed someone when driving drunk, and I don't know for sure if he did learn from that or not. But I know some songs from the band and like them fine. Not sure if I want to listen to a whole lot of albums besides Dr. Feelgood if I check them out. I don't know any songs from Dave Matthews Band, but I am planning to possibly give them a try someday.

An interesting topic for sure. And I can agree to an extent. Not a fan of The Final Cut. I love the original Heart band, and although they had some great success post, none of it appeals to me like the original band thru Dog And Butterfly or even Bebe Le Strange up to a point. Genesis - well pre-1980 is at the top of my all time favorite band - part of my musical DNA really but post Duke - doesn't do much for me, yet like you said kudos for all their massive success from their change of sound.

Alan, just when I think your videos can’t get more fun to watch, you give us this one! As a fellow Long Islander, I could barely control my laughter as you described how you felt like driving off the road and killing yourself after hearing the same Billy Joel song played on the radio for the umpteenth time. I so get that! There’s just no escaping the piano man on his home turf. Out of the ten popular musicians/performers that you hate, four of them make my own list. For me, Queen is the king of bands that I can’t stand. To my ears, the majority of Queen songs that I’ve heard couldn’t be more bombastic, or more dependent on studio gimmickry. In concert, Freddie Mercury’s stage presence is just too campy for my personal taste. When it comes to frontmen commanding an audience, I greatly prefer watching: Mick Jagger swagger, sprint and dance like his back has no bone; Bruce Springsteen rev up the audience into the kind of frenzy that makes rafters shake; Bono display his natural, practically fire-breathing intensity; and Roger Daltrey stomp around ferociously as his hands make his microphone dance in the air. The rest on my list are: #2. Rage Against the Machine (noise above all else); #3. Marilyn Manson (more noise above all else); #4. Muse (blah on top of blah); #5. Nine Inch Nails (so cold); #6. Motley Crue (ask Alan Rosenberg); #7. The Smiths (Johnny Marr can’t make up for the huge annoyance that is Morrissey); #8. Frank Zappa (makes me miss melodies that move me and songs that I can “pretend to” harmonize with); #9. Bon Jovi (ask Alan Rosenberg, again); #10. Billy Joel (yes, his songs are incredibly overplayed. But, even if they weren’t I still would be bothered by the majority of them.)

Thanks as always - wow we are so in agreement. I bought two "classic" Rage albums and your description is so spot on for me as well - noisy and not appealing to me at all - I dumped those albums - though I gotta say Morello is off the chart as a guitarist - his brief stint with the E Street band took them to a level that was unimaginable. Marilyn Manson - totally agree. Nothing against the look but he should've checked out the original Alice Cooper - you need the songs. I never enjoyed The Smiths also. And Frank Zappa - well I have a bunch of his albums. Maybe one day I'll do a video on him. I think he purposely tries to be so complicated, and sophomoric and so "Zappa" so he stands out from the crowd and creates this incredible reputation. Yea he can read and notate music and purposely create on paper incredibly complicated music that only the best musicians can possibly play. But creation for creation is just...creation. In my opinion, it's actually harder to create a memorable melody that sticks in the head and is a truly memorable song. And over...what 300 albums...lol. Zappa hasn't done that too much. Maybe he's covering a shortcoming???? With that said, on occasion, some of his stuff can be "fun".
@ronalaurence4105
@ronalaurence4105 4 ай бұрын
I think you’ve got Zappa pegged. “Complicated” and “sophomoric” to “create a reputation” that “makes him stand out from the crowd” is the perfect summation of what he is. “Creation for creation is just… creation!!” That’s one hell of a profound truth. I really, really love that quote.

@@ronalaurence4105 thanks so much. I really do believe that with his music. Notating 1000,000 notes on music, notation paper, and occasionally putting on shocking And sophomoric lyrics does not make one great songwriter. It truly is much harder to come up with a three minute pop song with a great hook that has genuine feeling and emotion. Some thing that I don’t think Zappa is ever been able to achieve.
@ronalaurence3075
@ronalaurence3075 4 ай бұрын
You nailed it when assessing Zappa. Your points are well thought out and impactfully written. He was a devoted student of what I call the “academics of music.” He was driven to create music so complex that much of it could be performed by only the most skilled musicians. His general state of smugness led him to try and shock listeners by juxtaposing his sophisticated compositions with songs from which he derived titles such as “Titties and Beer,” “Stick It Out,” “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow,” etc. I love a good laugh, and I am not easily offended. Some songs strive for nothing more than to just be fun. And I think the world needs those, unless they’re just too ridiculous to have real value. That, of course, is subjective. What is a fact, though, is that Frank Zapoa’s legacy of music does not include a three-minute song that makes you stop what you’re doing, gasp for breath and say to yourself, “This song will stay in my heart and mind forever.” Because, as you wrote, Alan, those kinds of songs are the hardest to create. John Lennon and Paul McCartney did not need to know how to read music or notate to write “The Long and Winding Road” and so many others that have stood the test of time and have genuinely made fans weep by the emotions that they release.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 4 ай бұрын
@@ronalaurence3075 As always you are poetry in motion. You totally captured my feeling regarding Zappa overall. For me, being able to notate and write down on manuscript as many notes as you want in weird places and time signatures so only the best players could even attempt to play it doesn't make you a great songwriter - creation for creation's sake doesn't create memorable songs that create emotional response. It could create an audience reaction of "wow those musicians are incredible - they sure can play tricky stuff". But in some ways that can be musical masturbation. Fun at the time maybe, but not memorable....Thanks as always.

I don't hate the artists mentioned, I just don't think they are as great as the rest of the world thinks. I don't have any of the artists' CDs because I don't think their music is great, merely pedestrian. Radio stations play the same set of songs as if the artist only wrote 2-5 songs and nothing else. Once in a great while you may hear a deep cut song, but it's rare. I usually listen to college radio since they play new artists. At least you get more variety of songs. That doesn't mean all the new songs are great, but at least you hear so many different songs, you don't have to worry about hearing the same songs over and over again.

Alan, you've got me laughing out loud on this one! Hilarious! I am imagining the news clip--"Car smashes into bridge embankment...opening riff of 'Big Shot" heard streaming from the wreckage"....I often wonder what would make my list, but it probably changes way too frequently. And if I'm not mistaken, hasn't that goofy Queen song "Don't Stop me Now" supplanted "Don't Stop Believing" as most downloaded song ever??? Interesting that a lot of fans and critics now put Queen on the same plateau as Beatles/Stones/LZ,--and I liked them when I was young. In fact, the very first long player I ever bought with my own money was "A Night at the Opera"...I was about 12 and hooked on Bohemian Rhapsody...and I remember plunking down $5.99 at the local K Mart to buy it--and yes, this was before "Made in the Shade" (which, quite frankly, probably rescued me). However, my tastes changed....and now, thanks in large part to Millennials, they are as revered as anyone--I'm sure that goofy movie had a lot to do with that too. And Motley Crew (sic)...has there ever been a bigger group of Poseurs to reach the Big Time than those dudes? I mean, I cannot take anything away from any artist that scored that many hit songs and albums, and loaded arenas to boot--it doesn't just happen, and it's not that easy to do. But they seemed to really get fat (and on the verge of respectable) with those late 80s power ballads/cock rock crap...and they did it just in the nick of time, as months later, that schlock quickly fell out of favor. I mean, that tawdry little book was even expanded into a Netflix bio? And people inhaled that like Snicker bars. And, if I may be so bold, shouldn't any such list feature auto entry for Ed Sheeran? I mean, that dude has, IMHO, ruined every wedding I've been at for that last 10+ years--that mewling, wispy falsetto, those sneakers, the nylon string guitar...those P-whipped sentiments....???? Oh well....great video as always!

So glad I cracked you up - because damn I'm hysterical right now. What a visual, my cracked up car - me unconscious bleeding from the head with Big Shot playing (oh perfect choice - I hate that one!) but a smile on my face because I couldn't take it anymore. Don't Stop Me Now has supplanted Don't Stop Believing - That's from bad to worse - I cannot stand that song - talk about annoying. Maybe it's something with "Don't Stop". Maybe the Fleetwood Mac track is high too. I can bear that one. Now that Crue quote of yours "inhaled like Snicker Bars" that's good. I think marketing helped Crue so much and the big flashy insane show - perfectly covers up the musical inadequacy. Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson helped too I'm sure. I don't have any Ed Sheeran but you're quote on him is incredible - that's got to be use in an advertisement - like reverse advertising or something. I'd buy an album with that tagline just to experience it...lol Thanks so much.

Oh man, as soon as I hit send, I had a flood of better ones for Ed Sheeran that hit me: Has ruined more weddings than “Proud Mary” and “From This Moment”-COMBINED (seriously, how many times do we have to endure the happy couples first dance to Perfect or Thinking Out Loud); Ed Sheeran: Milque Toast, redefined; Ed Sheeran-making Adam Levine look Bad Ass. (Hey, at least he did Moves Like Jagger and gyrated around with Christina Aguilera). But getting back to a more serious point with Queen-I think at their best they were a great singles band-but their albums really were not very good, granted that’s just my opinion, but I quickly came to feel that way after hearing Opera-and subsequent releases. And now, look-they are bigger than ever, and generate more streams and downloads than Stones, LZ, U2, even Beatles-combined! How did it happen???? One more thing to blame on Millennials?

@@anthonyaswe4174 I totally agree - it happened because of exactly what you said - probably 90% of people who say Queen are the greatest band of all time have never owned or listen to a complete Queen album. We live in a Spotify world. They know the 8 or so massive songs that they hear and love to death, so they're the "greatest" band ever. They own and listen to the greatest hits album where they know and love every song. But if you listen to their discography - does the Queen albums compare to the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who - of course not - it's a joke - but not in todays music world - it's not an albums world to the majority.

As a lifelong Rush fan, I can somewhat empathize with the haters. However, the Professor Neil Peart was a very talented and influential drummer who may have influenced many of your favorite drummers along the way - tens of thousands of them to be exact - from many different genres. He was a very complex drummer and likewise a great lyricist. And it somewhat sickens me to hear when the Rush haters actually threw a party with utter gladness when Peart lost his battle with brain cancer. I've met some here at YT, and I regret ever interacting with them. How bad do you have to hate a band so much to the point where you jump up with glee and throw a little celebration of arrogance when the glue guy of the band (who was pretty much the backbone of Rush) succumbs to cancer? If only you knew the hell the guy went through before he was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his first wife (to cancer) and oldest daughter (at age 19 in a car accident.) I know that doesn't mean one single thing to the haters and I'll never change the minds of most of them, but I just thought I'd point that out anyhow. Not only that, Rush had the same three members for 4 decades. Try finding one rock or metal band that had that type of longevity. You won't find one, except for maybe ZZ Top or U2. Peart wasn't an original member, but he was a much better drummer than his predecessor. And their instrumentals were epic, especially the 9 minute "La Villa Strangiato" from 1978's Hemispheres. They had talent, believe it or not, and their legacy is cemented in the Rock Hall.

As a drummer, Pearts drum skills are beyond dispute - he was an incredible drummer. Also had the biggest kit I ever saw. The fact that anyone would celebrate his death from cancer or any other illness, plus the immeasurable tragedy he had in his life is beyond disgusting. Almost hard to believe, but if it's true, they're barely human.

Cool channel. Enjoy the content! Couldn’t disagree more on the Foo Fighters, Rush and the Crue. The FF ‘s have a ton of great, high energy tunes and are great live! Also have some outstanding slower style songs. Their overall discography is very good. I was never a Nirvana fan so I’m happy that Grohl was able to breakaway and create the FF ‘s👍 Based on the “time and place” theory of why we love some bands, for me is Rush. I’m a late 70’s, 80’s kids who loved the drums so when Moving Pictures came out I was blown away by the drums/music. The rest is history…been a fan ever since. For Motley Crue, again it was all about the timing. I lived through (and had a great time 🤘😁) the 80’s hair metal scene and for short period time played in band similar to Skid Row. So at that time MC was the biggest band around, wrote killer hard rock tunes and the arena tailgating parties were something to behold!! Best period of my life and the Crue made it even better. 👍

I totally agree with time and place theory...what a great way to phrase it too. Because it's so true. I never got into the "hair metal" phase, so didn't interest me, but if I had, it had to be an incredible time to grow up, party, girls, etc. Guns n' Roses came at the end of that as well. So I totally understand. I say that some music is now in my DNA - and that what I mean. This music is part of your DNA and I totally respect and get that. That's what music should do to us. Individually, Individual taste and experiences. So powerful and so valid. Thanks.

Alan, you make a mistake many folk do: you blame the artist for dull, uninspired radio overplaying songs until you're sick of them. Billy Joel, Journey And Bon Jovi are not at fault for miserable corporate radio's misdeeds. Yes, Journey and BJ are formulaic, now. But they were cutting edge at an early point in their careers and occasionally still bring it. I'm a big fan of Rush, Journey, Queen and Billy J. I worked in radio when jocks controlled most of the playlist and I moved into news and sports when that was no longer true. Radio is beyond horrible now, totally unlistenable as far as I'm concerned. I don't listen to terrestrial radio, only Sirius XM, so I never have a problem hearing ads and overplayed corporate crap. I urge you to place blame where it really belongs. Appreciate your show as always.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much - point very well taken, but......it's definitely not the bands fault - that's totally true. But.....for whatever the reason, in this case LI radio constantly playing the same Billy Joel songs to the point, I instantly have to shut off the station when the song is on, its now because I truly can't stand the song. Not the artists fault, but in the end I truly can't stand the song(s) so I no longer like the artist, at least to a certain extent. There are songs that are equally overplayed, that I don't hate, but don't need to ever hear, like certain Tom Petty songs (Free Falling) or Satisfaction from the Stones. And there are totally overplayed songs that I still love to hear - totally timeless like Stairway To Heaven. So what you're saying is valid....yet what I'm saying is equally valid I think. Cool that you work in radio. Gotta say - I don't know how terrestrial DJ's do their job. I'd kill myself in the studio having to listen to those same damn songs and act excited about it. I don't know how they possibly can do it. And I imagine, at least some of them, are true music fans - must drive them nuts. Best, Alan

Man, we must have incredibly similar taste in music. Obviously, I love the Stones!!! But in terms of the list, I have to say I agree with all of them except Motley Crue. I do like the Crue. I do like Queen also, but I definitely get what you're saying about their music. I hardly ever pull out a Queen record and play it all the way through. If it comes on the radio, I typically skip it. If I'm out somewhere and it's on or if a band is covering it, I'll listen and certainly enjoy it, but I don't listen to their music much unless someone else has it on. Foo Fighters I've seen live, and it was a good show, but I've never understood the popularity there. Their sound doesn't stand out to me. I love Bon Jovi's 80s stuff, but everything since then with the exception of, "It's my life" is some bastardized, formulaic country pop crap that I find highly annoying. It's got no balls. Toto is fine and all but again, nothing I'm going to go buy a record for. Coldplay is way overrated. I can't stand the sound of Rush. Great musicians but Geddy's voice is grating. Journey is great when you're out dancing but I'm never going to put on a Journey album. Billy Joel, I do enjoy but it is overplayed, and he doesn't do much new stuff. Dave Matthews is an exceptional talent, but I absolutely can't stand his music. It's incredibly lame and I have never understood what the hype was about. His voice is annoying. I feel the same way about him as I feel with John Mayer....incredible talent but no balls. Like elevator music to me. Soft rock lameness.

I agree 100% about Dave Matthews. Can’t stand his voice or his goofy dancing and weird music that isn’t rock n’ roll. He is one of the most offensive inductee’s into the rock hall, which is saying something. Dave Matthew’s was voted in with more votes than Ozzy Osbourne. I find that suspicious since Ozzy was leading the fan vote by a lot until the last few weeks of public voting being open.

If I had to make a list of the 10 greatest bands, Queen and Rush would be in there somewhere. I couldn't rank that list in a strict order. Anytime I try to think of the all time greatest band, there's some flaws about them that would stop me. Yes, even The Beatles. But as for Queen and Rush- Queen's music is enthusiastic sounding and most of the songs aren't based in real life experiences. Some people prefer a more down to earth musical style with lyrics they can relate to. But they had an exceptional voice and guitarist, they all wrote songs in different styles. Mercury and May especially were great songwriters. But that's a strike against them for some people because they don't really belong to any genre and many people like a band that sticks to one basic idea. Their 70s albums are done in so many musical styles. Their frequent chart success makes some people look down on them as too "poppy" but come on, people like catchy tunes whether they admit to it or not. Beethoven wrote catchy music too, it wasn't all serious wrestling with fate stuff. I wasn't aware that Queen get touted as the best band of all time these days. I grew up in the 80s and Queen weren't a cool band to be into. If they're highly lauded these days then I can understand why people might get annoyed, excessive hype can be irritating. It's not worth hating a band for other people's hype though. Rush, well it's usually Geddy's voice that kills them for many people. I think in the 80s his voice was musically more appealing. I even remember watching their 1981 concert on VHS tape years ago and my mother came in and remarked "the singer has a good voice" True story! The 70s Rush albums, yes Geddy is more abrasive but I view it as edgy and angry. It's like venturing out into a cold wind, a shock to the system at first but once you get accustomed to it, it's quite bracing. I never had a problem with Geddy's voice. Get past the voice you get wall to wall talent as instrumentalists. and songwriters. And I'm not even that much into lyrics but Neil Peart's lyrics are extremely clever and poignant.

Wow, it seems like a lot of us are on the same page with you Alan! I thought Coldplay was great in the day, but as with most of the acts on your list, their sound kinda burned out. I also thought I liked Phish a lot, but outside of a couple of songs I think I would have taken Motley Crue off your list and put them there instead; they are simply booooring!!!!!! There are a couple of Rush tunes I really do love: "Fly by Night" and "Closer to the Heart", otherwise I can live without the rest of their discography. The main exception I do have though is (yup, here it comes) Billy Joel I would keep off the list. No, I don't have his whole catalog, but the only 2 that I have anything close to that would be Al Stewart and Sutherland Brothers with Quiver. Billy Joel's music simply (I think) reflects a lot of aspects of life without overblowing it. It maybe somewhat emotionally diminished, but it's spot on. Rush was a band in a class of its own. Loads of talent and tens of millions of records sold. Everyone hates Rush because of Lee's voice, but they often overlook the rhythm section (Lifeson and Peart), their longevity as a band (same 3 members for 41 years) and the tightness they had as musicians. And here's the one thing that burns me blue about the Rush haters. Pumping fists and high fiving in poor taste when the Professor Neil Peart loses his bout with brain cancer in 2020. Just plain sad, and the man experience a lot of turmoil in his life before the diagnosis, such as losing his first wife of 23 years to cancer, and before that his oldest daughter in a car accident. And a lot of these Rush haters are either with the KISS Army or they're with the hair metal zombies - two of the most insufferable and arrogant fan bases I've ever seen in my life. Rush toured with KISS in the mid 70s and had several heavy metal or hair metal bands open up for them in the 80s. You may not like Lee's voice or Rush's music, but they're a band who has always had respect for other rock or metal bands. And they were always open to having glam metal bands open up for them. Three guys who have always been polite and respectful. I get the hate for Lee and Rush's style of music, but not for their personalities or humility. KISS Army members will always feel resentment toward Rush because they got in the Rock Hall before KISS did. At least I can say no one from Rush had the cocky and brash attitude that Gene and even Paul has displayed for many years now. Even Ace respects Rush more than he does his former band members. And there's a good reason for that. Rush earned respect from their rock and metal peers.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 4 ай бұрын
@@davej.meister5421 I've never even heard of these personality conflicts. Always seemed to me that the three members of Rush (after the first album of course), always seemed nice and relatively down to earth. I never saw them act like "obnoxious rock stars". And the tragedy in Peart's life is beyond belief. Who would celebrate that? That's beyond sick. I know he used to ride his bike cross country on their tours and wrote books about it. That's about as down to earth as you can get. My dislike of Rush is really due to Geddy's voice and I do think, in my taste, they're music is overrated compared to other legendary prog bands - notably classic Yes. I thought it was wrong that Rush got in before Yes. But that's just me. Rush's fan base and dedicated fans is far beyond most other prog bands...most other bands in general.

I've seen a number of these "bands I hate" lists, and there is a fair amount of congruence between them. Billy Joel is new (and I applaud this because, lovely guy as everybody says he is, my only question when he turns up is, "Who is he trying to sound like now?"). Velvet Underground tend to be high up the list of hated bands - maybe a cultural dislocation thing. ... And then Queen. I never really liked Queen - and I saw them on their first tour in 1973 - but I love 'Made in Heaven,' which is a requiem for Freddy Mercury, and 'Barcelona.' And then I worked my way backward, having finally clocked them as a band of consequence, and began to see their considerable merits. The band I want to see on this " I hate" list is Led Zeppelin, but nobody dares go there. It would be safer to slaughter a cow in India. How did they get themselves elected to be the Holiest of Holies? Peter Grant must have been a genius. This is a totally average band, with a couple decent albums, that has been turned into the fatted calf. Mind-boggling to watch. And to think that somebody could have done the same for The Bay City Rollers or Take That.

Thanks so much Tim. Loved your comments, as always. I've heard good things about Made In Heaven, but I can't see me getting any more Queen except Queen II, because so many people said I can't criticize Queen without having that one, so I'll dig into it for that reason alone. I haven't seen to many of these videos (I've seen two actually), because I never want to be influenced by others in my personal videos. Velvet Underground is surprising to me, but then again I can see it....their first album, I really like (but it's not my favorite), but I can see people hating it. I give you credit for Led Zeppelin. I do a series call Treasure or Trash and often think of putting Presence in it....? "Safer than to slaughter a cow in India". Now that's a fantastic quote - that's amazing. I actually don't agree, though. But they are overrated in some ways. Really live, they were very hit or miss - Obviously Page is a great songwriter, producer and guitarist (he was a master studio musician before Zep), but live he could be so sloppy and Zeppelin albums sound so great, live they were lacking some times. And also their live jamming could go on and on. (Like half of When The West Was Won live album - and that's a fantastic performance compared to others). The first album was to a certain extent , a rip of Jeff Beck's Truth. And they ripped off so many blues classics... But with all that said...phew what a discography. And Physical Graffiti, and even Houses of the Holy are amongst my all time favorite albums. But I bought them the day they came out, so pretty special for me. Anyway, thanks so much for your awesome comments - always appreciated.

The thing about 'Made in Heaven' is that it is a requiem that was put together by Queen from bits and pieces Freddy left behind when he died - and I love requiems. What I didn't like about Queen before that was that the songs didn't really mean anything - great sounding songs but no emotional depth, which is kind of where I put Led Zeppelin, except, as they are so rooted in the Blues, I don't think the songs sound that great mostly either. 'Presence' is truly terrible - love the cover, though. I still love 'Stairway to Heaven,' having heard it a few times, but I wonder where it came from. I think there is an inspired songwriter wearing concrete boots at the bottom of a lake somewhere in Wales who actually wrote it. Love 'Kashmir,' and 'Since I've been loving you' is a really clever Blues song, worthy of Neil Young's 'This note's for you' album, or whatever it is called. I just want somebody to be rude about Led Zeppelin (apart from me) just so that I can watch the perpetrator burned at the stake as a heretic (so, please don't you do it).

A couple decent songs but I’ll never go out of my way to listen to them. All these are great bands on paper but I just don’t favor them.

Great choices. Journey I’m do with you. I instantly turn them off. Don’t understand how Don’t Stop Believing go so huge. Uh. I be like the Eagles but so overrated. Very good band but not on my radar for best American band. I agree with you on Guns too. Some great songs and one classic album has somehow made them the modern day Led Zeppelin. Thanks.

I could never figure out the Poo Fighters popularity. Why do other Rock Stars flock to Dave Grohl like he's something special? No guitar skills, just a lot of bashing. Songwriting blah. How can they headline stadiums? I just don't get it.

I'm with you. I give him credit for becoming a rock legend - after Nirvana - no easy feat. I think he's also a master of public relations - in movies, award shows, everywhere. And apparently he's a really nice guy. But musically does nothing for me as well.

Prog corner guy is nuts! Bon Jovi is my number 1 hated band…. I like 3 songs. Living in NJ I’m so in the minority. I sold Bon Jovi’s mother a home theater system once! David Bryan too. Sorry I love Rush - until 1985….The last album too. Journey’s pre Perry albums are actually great. Love Queen also. Queen 2 is my favorite! Very heavy and very groggy. I have only heard one Coldplay song! Toto so so so overrated. I agree with Foo Fighters. Morley Crue is awful. My friend’s band in Israel does a better “Boys Room” cover. They did it before Crue too. Matthew’s also I don’t get!
