Overstreet's World of Comic Books

A look at the hobby of comics, (Overstreet's role in the market) and a ton of creators including Todd McFarlane, Murphy Anderson, Carl Barks, Harlan Ellison, Gil Kane, Jack 'King' Kirby, Stan 'The Man' Lee, Julius Schwartz, Scott McCloud, William Gaines, Nimjack artist (!?) Joe Quesada and much more. Lots of other folks too like Peter David (in a snippet from David vs. McFarlane at about the 48 or 49 minute mark) and there are even semi famous people in the background (like 'Malibu' from 90s sport-game show American Gladiators among others) and a great Vampirella....

Very cool documentary. Thanks for posting. I wish I could've met Kirby before his passing. Without the King, there would be no comics as we know them today. It's unfortunate Todd ultimately turned out to be driven by money and greed more than anything else. Also, I wish Joey Q would have kept his sweet earrings and drawn Ninjak forever and never sat down in an editors chair.

What is great about these documentaries is that the comic book legends were still alive talke about their contribution to the comic book field! Now most of them are sadly long gone but fortunately we still have their creations to enjoy each and every day so they have become immortal like their heroes! Only Stan Lee is the last surviving dinosaur of the bunch! Hopefully some producer will make a very indepth interview of his career spanning more than 70 years! Boy does he have stories to tell!

This is what our world used to be,anyone trying to be cool would never want to be one of us at the time. These days it's totally trendy and being into comics is seen as a status symbol but back then you would only be part of this unless you absolutely loved it. SO TRUE, back in high school...you couldn't be part of the "cool click" if you were into comics, if you weren't talking HIP HOP, SPORTS, GETTING LAID, AND THE NEWEST SNEAKERS...you were not cool. BUT, I take credit and so should every other comic geek in the world today...if it wasn't for us "geeks", we wouldn't have these great movies (and not so great) like THE AVENGERS, BATMAN V SUPERMAN, SPIDERMAN, IRON MAN...I could go on all day with these. Now go into a comic store today...regular people, I see guys in suits in my comic store, cute girls...it's suddenly become the "IT" thing, to be in comics. RISE GEEKS...WE STARTED THIS SHIT!!!

The newest Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide with the Adam Hughes Catwoman cover for 2012-2013 has a really great visual gag in which she's trying to steal several First Editions of the 1970 Overstreet Price Guide (NM price $1.825) Batman catches her in the act.

@flameape I think it was released in 1994. It was probably made in 1992 0r 1993 (Spawn #1 was released in May 1992... so somewhere in between then and 1994). Its production values (and narration) make it seem much older, I think.

Before he did Spawn, what Marvel title was Todd McFarlane doing? 2. Which comic book company was publishing "Magnus Robot Fighter" at the same time? 3. What superstar was penciling X-men at the time? 4. Did Jim Shooter make the right decision when he left Marvel? 5. Are half of your vacuum-sealed, trading card, holographic cover comics worth even half as much now?

1. The Amazing Spider-Man he started with issue #298 (I was never a McFarlane fan) 2. Valiant 3. Jim Lee he started with Uncanny X-Men #248 (Not a fan of his either) 4. Personally I never liked Shooter during the era when Marvel was basically trying to blackmail Jack Kirby over the return of his original art, I met Shooter once at a convention when he was trying to promote Valiant back in the 1990's and something about him really rubbed me the wrong way. 5. I don't own any vacuum sealed, trading card holographic cover comics, When it comes to collecting Golden Age comics are what I go after, they're a far better investment, although I do know some people who go after vintage books in slabbed CGC holders :-P Buying something that you'll never ever read makes zero sense to me, even if you want comics for an investment; where's the fun in never looking at them even once? Another question is what source does a better job than Overstreet IMHO these days of covering all the back ground of which writer and which artist and which inker, letterer etc worked on what comic book throughout history from the Golden Age to the present day? That would be The Grand Comics Database at comicsdotorg.

I was at this con Comic Fest 1993,I don't remember if it was a traveling thing or if it was a one shot but this seems to be that same day. Both McFarlane and Erik Larsen were there signing,Erik was really cool and Todd came off as a bit of a dick. To add a little more cried I believe Spawn was on issue 14 or 15 at the time,I can't remember if it was before Cappulo dos his run but it was definitely after the issues where different writers each did an issue. Number 8 was probably the best of those,the cover art was the one that mimicked the first Torment issue but to be completely honest I don't remember who wrote it,it was either Alan Grant or Alan Moree but I'm pretty sure it was Grant. Issue 9 was the introduction of Angela. Sorry for that rant it's just cool running into another fan who was there before it was cool

I think its 1993 because I saw Superman with the Super mullet after the Reign of Supermen and it gave some space for Spawn to become popular, I also saw a Beavis and Butthead shirt, that show didnt start officially until early 93(before there were 2 pilot shorts in late 92) also taking account that Jack KIrby died in early 94. I also see the marvel 1993 annuals. too
