Just another way to look at this problem. If A,B, and C are all heading east, that means they all have a vector pointing the same direction. This also means that Alice's velocity must A-B. Then using the distance formula, d=vt, you can say that 100m=6(A-B). We know we ultimately are going to have to solve for Bill's velocity, so we can rearrange the equation to go B=A-(100/6). We can do the same thing with Alice and Chelsea. (300+100)m +=12(A-C), rearranged to C=A-(400/12). Now to find Bill's time to pass Chelsey, which is 300m=(B-C)t, were t is the time for Bill to pass Chelsea. Substitute to get t=300/(v-100/6)-(v-400/12), which of course comes out to 18. I just think this is a less complicated way to look at things. It's easier to recognize that different velocities with different vectors subtract, rather then to say a person traveled the same as another person did plus x amount of distance.

I noticed my last post some what doesnt make sense but basicly you know she is half of her way to chelsea at 6 minutes, half of her full distance to make up of 400 would be 200, but since she is passing bill at that time, he is also 200 behind at 6 minutes, or has caught up by 100 meters. If he catches 100 per 6 minutes, and he needs to catch 300 then you multiple 6 by 3 to get the amount of time it would take.

near the end i would have done it different (at 5:31 ) i would have done it with a simultaneous equation: Va6 = 100 + Vb6 Va12 = 400 + Vc12 multiply the first equation by 2 to get: Va12 = 200 + Vb12 Va12 = 400 + Vc12 then minus the second equation from the first one so its in the form Vb - Vc: 0 = (200 - 400) + (Vb12 - Vc12) so 0 = -200 + 12(Vb - Vc) so 200 = 12(Vb - Vc) so 200/12 = Vb - Vc simplified makes 50/3 = Vb - Vc which you can then use to solve for t

OK, I'm half asleep, but here's what I did: va = vb + 100/6 = vc + 400/12 Solve for vb - vc, which gives you the rate that Bill is catching up to Chelsea. vb - vc = 200/12= 50/3 meters/min t = d/v = 300/(50/3) = 18 minutes

a travels at a diffrent speed than b and a and b travel at diffrent speeds than c. but a, b and c dont change their speed- constant speed- same speed- they keep their speed. they travel at diffrent speeds but at the same speed :D

It takes her 12 minutes to catch 400 on the other girl, which means at 6 minutes she will be half her way there, but also that bill will be 200 yards behind her, remind you he started at 300 meaning you could say he is catching 100 yards every 6 minutes needs to catch 300 yards then divide 100 multiply by 6. Ratios make everything easier ;)

Want to really mess your brain? Figure out how many times faster A is than B. Now figure out how many times faster A is than C.

I did this in two minutes by making a drawing. The algebra was too hard.

O okay! I see! thanks!! i thought he meant they all travel at the same constant speeds
