THINKING about your training is important. But it does not replace FEELING your training. PLANNING is crucial. But it does not replace PUSHING your training. You cannot outthink a lack of effort and many decisions that you make in the gym will not be based on hard, quantifiable data but rather on instinct and feeling. At heart, I'm a lifting nerd. But you have to learn when to nerd out about lifting, and when to shut that shit off and just crush some iron. There's a balance to be struck here, and I feel like a lot of people are stuck not because of a lack of information, but because they are drowning in it. Hope you like the video! Hey GVS, just wanted to stop by and give my story real quick about gratitude and humility. I’ve lost my ability to go to the gym the last 5 months due to addiction, mental health struggles and being in institutions, the best wisdom I can give is appreciation, I had no idea how much of a blessing it is to be able to go to the gym at all until it was taken away. I never would’ve imagine I’d lose everything so quickly even if you told me a year ago that it’d happen, this was and still is my life, for awhile it’s all I had. I’m finally getting back on my feet now and I can’t wait to rebuild my physique and just go to the gym daily, i broke my collar bone from a seizure on may 4th and that’s the last thing that needs addressing before I can get fully back into it, I want to say thanks GVS for being a part of what’s keeping my passion burning throughout these months even though I haven’t been able to practice much of it, I aspire to start my own channel back up in 6 months or so to do the same for others, you’re really helping people man, you, Alex and Paris have been helping me through this, thanks for everything❤💪

I've had to work around shoulder injuries. While waiting for it to heal, you've got leg presses, leg extensions, leg curls, abductor/adductor machines, seated calf raises, etc. Anything to work without bugging the shoulder. It makes you feel good about getting back in the gym, and let's face it... you can finally give your lower body the attention it deserves.

I'm glad you brought up "enjoyment" as a factor. You're right. If you don't like your program, you're not going to stick to it. Also, experiential learning is king. I was working on improving on my upper pecs, and what I discovered is that training them twice a week with two different grips (regular and close grip) helped them grow. In six months, I noticed a noteworthy increase while in a cut. This is info I didn't obtain from a YT video.

The biggest thing people overlook with training that affects all lifters of different spectrums is autoregulation. Whether you're bodybuilder, powerlifter, or strongman, autoregulation will always be a key factor in how and where you take your training.
@---------------14 ай бұрын
Could you elaborate? What does auto regulation mean in this context?
@Jdm52994 ай бұрын
@---------------1 it's essentially basing your program and progression off how you feel. If you're doing a certain weight on a bench in your program, but you're not feeling it, lower the weight, maybe up the reps, and you'll still get a good workout.

Everytime i hear you talk, i can feel a fellow natty talking. Now i am not nearly as big as you but the way you workout and talk about stuff and lifting philosophy aligns with what i have learned over the years. I see all these enhanced lifters at my gym who come in do some quick movements for 30-45 mins where i dont even see them struggling and they keep getting massive, now most of these guys are in their early 20s, still in college and they already have a physique of a peak natty who has been training for 15 years, some are already looking like something you cant achieve naturally. Natural vs enhanced lifting is a completely different ball game. When you dont have roid infused blood to stimulate growth, you gotta provide all that stimulus yourself and that means training to failure, beyond failure with partitial reps to keep the burn going, adjusting rep range and angles, whatever works for your body proportions so that you feel that target muscle being hammered. I dont feel inspired by all these these enhanced lifters cause they are playing a different game but you are an inspirition, along with Alex, NH, bb, Scott and a few other real natties on youtube. Keep going brother.

Hi geoff, I agree with you wholeheartedly. When I was a beginner, you tend to follow a lot of information and overall you dont really have the experience to judge how you go about things. The pendulum swinging between different schools of thought also doesnt help! After surgery at the end of 2023 I decided to give old school silver era full body (including calves and rear delts) training a go, and I love this training style! 3x a week gives me time to recover well and avoid doms (which really helps for my work). I used to do push pull legs as a beginner but when I hit intermediate I moved to upper lower 4x a week, and then a 5 day split (upper lower, rest, chest/back, shoulders/arms,legs, rest repeat). But full body just feels right, and I forsee training this way for a long time. I started training in october 2021

If I get tired of hypertrophy for looks, I will push strength progression. When I live long enough to be fighting slow decline, I will seek progression on coordination and grace. I feel like lifters are prone to overthinking because people get into lifting because of the monotonous, discipline aspect of it. Ive been saying this for years, too many people train 'too' smart, as opposed to training hard. It's is subsequently always the people I see in the gym talking about training using the optimal science based techniques based on X,Y,Z etc who are also the smallest, they look the same they did 2-3 years ago. Im grateful I started lifting in a time where it was much simpler where mottos such as 'no pain no gain' were prevalent and I learned via hard work and trial and error what works for me and what doesn't. I have learned over the years i can be easily influenced by what I read at times in wanting to progress so im glad I started lifting before the internet. Even the science the more you follow such near always comes back to "maybe the bros were onto something" lol

So much conflicting information, people demonising old school exercises but still do hinges and dumbbell work, hard core people saying stick to the basics then inventing new wild curl variations, all this crap about how much volume to do, if you’re doing above ‘X’ sets per muscle it’s too much yet you’re progressing every set every week, people saying a certain exercise doesn’t train ‘that muscle’ yet it’s growing that muscle on you hugely. It’s just too draining these days. KZbin and social media science has ruined training to a degree

@@Eniovrolix not really needed to go beyond failure if you go from 15kg dumbell curls for 8 reps to 20kg dumbell curls for 8 reps and never go to failure you will still have bigger arms 💯 I'm not anti failure training and the last exercise and last set you can go all out and see what your max reps to failure with a given weight is but going to failure will never beat progressive overload for making gains as a natural lifter 💪

Hey Geoffrey! You've been featured in Josh Bret's latest video, very near the start! Such a high quality of content from him.

@@GVS that's good, Geoffrey! You're getting the recognition you absolutely deserve! I've been watching your channel for a few months and it's helped immensely! It must be weird though getting that recognition and being an "influencer" but you've earned it and I think you deserve it, I said that already but I'm saying it again!

Think in between sets, feel the muscle during the set.

Lateral raises in a stretched position really upped my growth but the lateral raise machine with the peak contraction focus hammers delts sore for 3 days at least with two thirds of the weight and even less reps. I think what is really missed a lot is that you can feel peak contraction movements by a F*CKTON, thereby strengthening MMC. What's a stretched exercise worth if i don't hit what I wanna target in the first place? What I do for back e.g: First exercise(3 sets) for a bigger muscle group very strict form very controlled slow eccentric, second exercise(3 stets)still fairly strict fairly slow but progressively less so and last exercise(2 sets) lots of oompf, multi joint movement so i can really really squeeze out the last few reps by using my arms as support

It’s a lot more fun making up your own program…within the confines of being safe and consistent with technique lol. You quickly know what will and won’t work when you just start.

Regarding injuries, back when I hyper focused on form I’d injure myself all the time, ever since I just feel the lift and move how my body wants to move. I’ve not had a single injury in 2 years

It used to get me a lot when I started lifting I would hear some advice for an exercise, try it out and it would just be awkward as hell for my build. N=1 as you always say Geoff, gotta find what works for you through experience in doing the thing

Overthinking comes a lot on focusing too much on how the exercise LOOKS. Instead of how it FEELS. Exercise technique is pretty individual past the basics so throw the technique cyborg out the window and get groovy with it.

Totally agree. After each set, if i don't break down and want to audibly CRY then 'm not giving it my all. Simple... sure i know when I'm holding back, when my body warns that I might need an ambulance. But, Gen X here. So... just leave me to my torture sessions thank you 🙂

What's (currently) keeping most people small is time. The rate of growth while training naturally is simply slow, slower than most people think. You will simply not be huge and jacked after a year of working out, even if you do things reasonably well. This is what often leads to erratic changes in programs and diet and thus ven more diminished results. It is necessary to simply be consistent, even on a program that isnt 100% optimal (whatever that means)
