@@joshuadowdle9691 Something like that happened two years ago in the women's national team world championship gold medal game. Finland (huge underdog in the game, who was a massive underdog in the previous game when they beat powerhouse Canada) appeared to win in it off an OT goal, and were celebrating for a good minute, and the rink staff was starting to move stuff out for the ceremony, before they noticed the refs were all huddling together talking about it. It was overturned as the USA goalie was slightly touched and pulled out of position- USA went on to win it in the shootout (which many people, myself included think is a bogus way to end elimination, especially gold medal games). It didn't go all the way to the whole ceremony being done and people leaving the stadium, but the Finnish team and fans were far more heartbroken the way it happened than if they had lost normally, even in a blowout. Edit: oh yeah I forgot, the call to reverse the OT goal was massively controversal- incidental contact with the goalie outside the crease is allowed if the skater makes "reasonably attempt to avoid contact"- totally subjective. The USA goalie left the crease on her own and into the path of the Finnish skater a fraction of a second before the very minimal contact. The US goalie was actually assessed a tripping penalty, but somehow the goal was wiped out.

I’m one of the interns that works for the hockey team. I do the sound board and am up in the booth with the video board intern. The thing that made this a confusing mess was the fact that the refs reviewed and confirmed the goal before the trophy celebration. Supposedly it was footage from a Bemidji fan shown to the coach that sparked the re-review. That’s when we went back and saw it was no goal and refs decided to take another look at it. And yes #3 was given 1st star of the game even though we didn’t do another celebration.

I was at this game myself, being a part of Bemidji State's pep band! Quite a crazy game, we were all ready to go back up north and realized that something wasn't quite right when our band director never came out of the building. People were texting him and he said that they were looking at one of the goals again. Soon enough, we got herded back inside and didn't fully leave until 10pm that night. Even though we lost that game, I don't think that I'll really forget it. P.S. Bemidji is pronounced like buh-midge-ee if nobody's commented that yet.

As a referee who does high level games. WE DO NOT always have to the luxury of the angles of what is being broadcasted on T. V. Even at the D1 college arena depending who’s home barn it is. Most of the time it’s an angle directly from the rafters of the arena directly down below depending if the areas has the view or from behind the net at a weird angle. Infact this game after the game was over, the referees had access to completely different Angles to what was available to them at the time vs what was show on TV including on social media platforms after it was pointed out to Tom Seratorre (BSU head coach) was a case of extenuating circumstances and honestly I blame the league for not adopting a rule that grants on ice officials to have access to broadcasting angles at any arena so they don’t run into this situation ever again.

@garygemmell3488
@garygemmell3488 2 жыл бұрын
@@dkelly8985 In the NHL all goals are reviewed between the goal being scored and the next faceoff. If something is questionable the off ice officials are notified who then notify the referees to hold up play. They then announce that the goal is under further review. Apparently, not so in college hockey. I am a baseball\softball umpire and can tell you when my authority begins and when it ends on the field. Before my authority begins or after it ends there is no rule I can enforce. It would be interesting to find out when a NCAA hockey referee's authority ends and when they were informed the goal was under review. All the post game shenanigans took at least 30 minutes and typically speaking the officials would have already been in their locker room stripping off their uniforms.

It's good to see the CCHA and Mason Cup revived. For those who don't know, the original CCHA was disbanded when Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State left to form the Big Ten Hockey conference, which I feel was a mistake. The trophy is named after longtime Michigan State coach Ron Mason and the conference tournament was always held at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Yep, it was Finland's first chance for a gold medal after years of USA-Canada domination. The tournament was in Finland, Finns score the OT winner, crowd goes bonkers, everybody is out on the ice celebrating with their sticks and gear all over the place, and then the goal gets overturned. I guess for goalie interference, but the goalie was several meters outside the crease, so I think it should have counted anyway. Then they resume play and US takes it in a shootout. This makes me think of when the NHL let the winning goal of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals stand, when Brett Hull of the Dallas Stars had his skate in the crease when he scored, which was illegal (except under very specific circumstances) at the time, and the hearsay surrounding the goal is that they let it stand specifically to avoid a situation like this. The game went to triple-OT so it was already past midnight in Buffalo, the Stars' Cup celebration had already started, so they just let it count to get everything over with faster; and then they repealed the "skate-in-crease" rule the next season anyways
@valpix7007

I also need to note that it wasn't just these two teams' seasons on the line. College hockey's selection process is transparent, and going into the night 12 bids had been clinched (11 at larges plus whoever won Atlantic Hockey, who had no one above the cut line) The three conference championship games that were important were this one, Hockey East (UMass/UConn), and the ECAC (Quinnipiac/Harvard). UConn, Harvard, and Bemidji State were all below the cut line and could steal a bid. Somehow, all three games went to OT. UConn lost pretty early (clinching spot 14 for UMass Lowell), but Harvard actually scored during the hour long pause to steal what would've been Ohio State's bid. Had Bemidji won after the overturned goal, this would've knocked Northeastern out.
