Looks great, Noah! Makes me miss my red 2003 P5. My paint had the same issue. Paint from that time wasn't the best, neither were it's mounts and ignition coils. Other than that, pretty solid car. Just keep that maintenance up. Keep up the good work. 👍

I like it ....I have a bone stock Pr5 that I bought new in 2003 , just turned 50K miles, it's OEM and perfect but keep thinking it needs an exhaust or bigger wheels, doesn't get much use since I retired and bought a Lexus CT200h F sport in 2016. Ok...It's a slow hybrid but lots of luxury and btw 45 mpg avg.

Very tough choice keep it stock and mint or make it have a couple nice mods and mint. Wheels and tires are always reversible. Those Lexus look super nice, it’s like a cool Prius!

Oh yeah - fellow Protege owner here - that rear motor mount is 100% going to be your issue, and it's a PAIN to replace though. Just did mine today and it can be done without removing the intake and throttle body - definitely worth doing if you hate the jerky feel while driving. Lots of good tips on the Mazdas247 forum for how to do the replacement.

I'm here in California and far as I know we have the strictest regulations along with NY.. once i pass smog this and a couple other videos got me lowkey considering doing it and swapping back to stock in 2 years just for the smog.. if it is just as easy as it appears to switch and isnt gonna burn through the internals way faster..

Awesome build, like that you used pretty quality parts and were OEM+ with the turbo setup from the Mazdaspeed sedan. Maybe do bondo/body filler, sand the car down and get it prepped for paint and then send it bro

I had a protege as my first car but it was a hand me down so yeah it wasn’t taken care of and was auto. I fell in love with the go cart feeling. Weirdly enough the protege interior was a nice place to be. But to put it short, it will never beat a civic. You put less money in a civic and it will be faster, reliable, and cheaper. I feel like the only thing this car got going for it is the looks of the car or it’s a grocery getter.

I most definitely agree, finding parts or for the amount of money I’ve put into it I could’ve bought a faster a car or modify another one to be much faster. But this is an incredibly fun car to drive, work on, and the groups are very nice.

You can always turbo it, but even then it won’t add a whole of power. The only true way is to go forged internals and some sort of tuning solution. But if you are still naturally aspirated then the MP3 ECU is always a good thing to look into.

You had mentioned that you had the clutch replaced. I've got over 231K miles on my first clutch, but I think it's time to do the replacement. Did you do it yourself, or did you have a local shop do it? We're in the same city, so if you had a shop do it and recommend them, please let me know! I love your P5!

I had mine done at a shop. I supplied them the clutch, but it was a cheap clutch and after some hard driving it didn’t last long. So then replaced it my self with another eBay clutch but it was a stage two. And ever since the clutch has felt like garbage. It’s a big job since you have to take so much out and a buddy to help. All I can say is get a good quality OE replacement like an exeddy. But I got my first one done at DJs Automotive!

You have to remove both cv axles from the trans so doing it then makes the most sense. Do the rear motor mount too, unless you plan on taking the intake manifold off soon.

I’ve replaced all the motor mounts and even fill the rear one with windshield urethane to make it solid and it still lurches but the car feels way better and more responsive. Is yours awd?

It’s same plug for the ecu and the mazdaspeed protege doesn’t have any different sensors or anything. The whole turbo setup is analog besides the tune on the ecu. After you install the turbo you just swap the ecu and it’s all good!

It is as long as you have a manual transmission and the 2.0L engine. I don’t think ABS matters either. But everything from the mazdaspeed protege will fit the other Manual 2.0L protégés!

I have a 02 MP5 and I installed the turbo charger but I don't know what to do next. A friend of mine says that I have to buy a different ecu and chips for the car. But another friend is telling me that I just need it to get tuned. Do you have any advice for what to do?

If you have a Mazda speed protege turbo setup you can use that cars ecu to make yours run. Chips don’t work in these cars. You can’t flash tune the ecu. But you can buy a stand-alone ecu such as a haltech and you wouldn’t need the mazdaspeed protege ecu. Stand-alone is better but more expensive.

Yes! I went with a front mount and that doesn’t interfere with the ac or need a new radiator, since the Mazdaspeed protege uses a side mount intercooler, smaller rad and ac as well.

The headlights are custom, I opened up the light and sprayed the chrome housing black. Or you can buy the European spec headlights, and they look the same. The window visors are from Amazon, Super cheap and they fit okay.

The mazdaspeed ecu is gonna be needed for a basic setup. I have a video in the works of my turbo setup and a few other routes. But essentially it is that easy though.
