Overview of the 64 Aṅgas of Vedāṅgajyotiṣam - Part 1 | Anand Vishwanathan

Jyotisha is one of the six vedanga-s, considered the eyes of the Veda. It is recorded in Vedic texts and was further developed as a separate and elaborate discipline of natural sciences consisting of 64 anga-s (limbs/parts) by Rishis such as Parashara, Garga, Vasishta, Narada, Kroshtuki, Vishwamitra and many others. There is a distinct character to this vedangajyotisha when compared to later more popular Siddhantajyotisha and Horashastram. This talk by Anand Vishwanathan, recipient of the "INSA Young Historian of Science Award 2021" is in two-parts, it aims to introduce some of the anga-s amongst the 64 to give an idea about the nature of this discipline.

This talk introduces the systematic and observational jyotisha/natural sciences works including Parashara Tantra , Vrddha Gargiya Jyotisham , Surya Chandra Pranjyapti that range between 4 to 3 thousand years ago. The angasamuddesha , table of contents, of VGJ listing 64 chapters shows the richness of pursuit of natural sciences. The objective description of the retrograde motion of Mars using margas, veethis and nakshatras shows the rishis interests in being specific. That these traditions start with observations, followed by models and then portends is interesting.

I think we should not be embarrassed of Hora component and embrace it fully. By declaring it of Greek origin we are handing over many important Indic innovations over to western horoscopy. For centuring Braahmanas were respected for their Hora only! All the Nimittas that were described under the final segment of this video are nothing but Hora! Apart from this issue, I am very happy with this series and looking forward to more!
