I don't understand the confusion. People who want only the PvP side, can still play Overwatch without the need to buy OW 2. People who want the story and PvE will have to buy OW 2. And I think it's fair, I mean... making a separate story mode, story missions and hero missions is a lot of work, worth of a separate game. Maybe technically it could be an expansion but it's about the new Overwatch that was created after the first one was dismantled - that's why calling it Overwatch 2, because it is literally about the second Overwatch organisation.

It makes sense to make another game: -Engine upgrades -Better UI -More heroes -More maps/modes -Hero different looks -Story mode and co-op repayable missions -probably more that I'm missing or more they havent announced yet

Indeed, I suspect the engine upgrade, new UI/look, & maybe new modes (Story & Hero definitely, Push Maybe) are probably OW2 only, but assets like heroes, map, and save data are cross a/o reverse compatible.

PSadlon all of the maps, heroes and the gamemode push are going to be in overwatch 1 as well. The PVE side of things are overwatch 2 only and because it’s so much, adding it to the main game would make the game files stupidly large and console owners would only be able to have 1 game installed at a time with it. So it does make sense that they’re making it a new game.

Popular question: why would Overwatch make a sequel if it's only going to be mainly about the PvE experience that they've already introduced through the Archive events? Answer that no one really listens to sometimes even though it was already covered: those Archive events were a difficult if not outright impossible task to pull off with the Overwatch engine as it was. In order to get the more advanced and complex mechanics of a PvE system to work in something like Overwatch, which is mainly driven for PvP combat, they had to re-evaluate the engine and mechanics of the game entirely... which is enough work in of itself for an entirely separate game from the main Overwatch. Plus, the Dev team didn't want the inevitable split in the Overwatch community if or when they had to launch a separate game for PvE, despite Overwatch still being an existing game that's still worked on and kept updated constantly. So they re-defined what a sequel means for Overwatch: ALL HEROES, MAPS and PvP GAME MODES from 2 will also be added to 1. ALL COSMETICS you've unlocked in 1 will also transition with you when you jump into 2. This way, people can still use 1 for the sole purpose of PvP, while 2 offers the highly requested PvE co-op story experience that the original couldn't quite keep up with.

Love that reaction! Funny thing is that most of the customized skills shown were actually in the custom game I've made (which is a pve payload push against ai bastions). Like Genji's blade pulse, reinhardt's earthshatter with damage and upward impulse, tracer blinking indefinitely in midair if you are good at controlling it etc.

The current mindset is that buying Overwatch 2 will get you access to the PVP, a Full PVE Campaign with expansive story cinematics, around 40 ish heroes and their talent system in PVE (6 talents per hero), and 30 ish rotating Hero Missions (roughly 1 per map). For veteran players, this means that if they have no interest in the PVE then they do not have to buy the new game. (At least not right away.) But if they do they are basically paying for a colossal PVE Expansion. For new players, this is a significantly large game at what I imagine will be a fair price point. Also, if they had called it an 'expansion', rather than a sequel, then people would have thought they had to buy the first game as well and that would have turned people off. Interestingly; this Cinematic Trailer was titled "Zero Hour" suggesting Overwatch "1" and all the story, up to the point of Overwatch 2's release, was a prequel.

The way I understood things, Overwatch 2 is not exactly a sequel, but more like chapter 2, like a huge uptade with many contents. Basically, the client for Overwatch 2 will replace the client for the first one. Everybody will be playing the same things for the PvP. The things that you will have to pay for will be all the PvE content and the upgrade in the graphics. That way, if you are not interested in the PvE, you won't have to pay for anything. Also, the devs also confirmed that almost everything is far from finished, be it the HUD, the PvE and even the PvP maps, so everything will be changed and more content added until the release of the game, which will be autumn 2020 at the earliest.

It's not a new engine, it's updated, that's why Overwatch 1 and 2 will be able to play together. If PvE isn't your thing, don't buy it, you'll still get all the PvP updates. An entire story mode and various replayable missions are worth buying a new game if it's expansive enough, and judging by recent articles and interviews it seems this is much larger than what we saw. But time will tell.

Overwatch 1 & 2 will be basically in the same game. if you don’t buy ow 2 the pve section will be locked for you but you can still play in the new maps, use new heroes and play the new pvp mode. all the hud updates etc. Will be in the ow 1 too You basically just pay for the pve modes if u want to play it That is how it works i think
