Of all the incredible moments in this short, Tracer's "Yes! The cavalry's here!" is what broke me most. 47:50 don't start that conversation with us... we will cry. I won't give the whole background but OW2 was promised a story driven PvE aspect, kinda the whole reason the game was supposed to exist. Many of us even pre-paid for it. After years of playing with our hearts, they officially and permanently canceled it at some point last year. Also, in regards to the TV show/movie idea, we've been saying that for ages of course and rather recently a statement/interview thing got released indicating that there was a TV show planned but there were problems with Netflix (from Blizzard's side I believe (not surprising)) and now it is almost certainly never to be, certainly not anytime soon.

What I like most about this cinematic, and you pointed it out a little, but the point of the final battle is to act as a metaphor for the actual gameplay itself: it’s not just a shooter, it’s a *team* shooter. It only works if you and your team work together, emphasize each other’s strengths, cover each other’s weaknesses. Even down to the combining of the ice pack and pulse bomb-both Tracer’s and Mei’s ultimates, which is a common strategy in the game, combining multiple ultimate abilities that work well together. We did get some pve/solo/story content, and it was honestly really good and added a lot to the story, but it’s unclear when or even if they’ll continue to develop it.

answering the 'who's that' questions and rambling for a bit . - yes, Echo from Reunion (Reunion was her introduction to the fandom and came out when she did). nothing about her is explained in her animations so abilities; she has limited flight, sticky bombs, a beam that isn't shown off in this, and clusters of shots as her primary fire. her ult lets her transform into enemy heroes in-game. - the angel, as others have said, is Mercy aka Angela Ziegler. she's a support hero who's been in the game since OW1's launch. the best shot of her from a previous animation is her Hallowe'en photo with Torbjorn Lindholm in Recall, which showed off her Witch skin (widely regarded as the best skin of Mercy's since it came out in 2016). she heals and damage boosts with the staff, has a glock that was memed as doing 'a surprising amount of damage' in the late 2010s, flies with her Valkyrie suit, and revives allies in-game. she's Swiss-Gerrman, in case anyone's curious. we have the Europeans in this animation*. - the girl who shows up with Rein was in Honor and Glory. her name is Brigitte Lindholm. she's one of Torbjorn's daughters. whip-mace and shield for her weaponry. she and Torb are Swedish. Torb has been criticised by my Swedish friends for having a weird first name, Brigitte has not. - someone else said Mei's the devil, but she's just a DPS character. her primary fire (default) is a freezing stream of icy air, her secondary (default) is the icicles that you see in this animation, her ult is Snowball producing an area of freezing air? just ice? also known as Blizzard, she can put up the ice wall from Rise and Shine (apparently 10ft. tall, according to one of her ability voicelines, 'what's 10 foot tall, and made of ice?'), and freeze herself in an ice block to heal. - we already know Genji but it felt rude to leave him out. this is his OW2 default skin while the others seem to have OW1 default skins (bar Mei and Tracer; Mercy now has a god-awful hairstyle instead of it being tied up like it is in this animation). this was also the reveal for how Mei, Tracer, and Genji would look. --- * unironically, I think every European character besides Torbjorn (Swedish), Sigma (Dutch), Moira (Irish), and Widowmaker (French) is in this animation; Torb retired and the other three are Talon and thus not allowed in the Overwatch meetups. there are no American characters in this animation. the Europeans are Tracer (English), Reinhardt (German), Mercy (Swiss), and Brigitte (Swedish). Mei and Genji are Chinese and Japanese respectively, and Echo was made by a Singaporean doctor (Mina Liao) and voiced by the same voice actor as Dr. Liao (Jeannie Bolét) making all three Asian (Eastern and Southeastern). Winston is from the Moon. the Moon has more representation in this game than most countries except the USA and Japan, and equal rep with Australia, Egypt, and Mexico with two characters (Winston and Hammond). the USA has four (Cassidy, Soldier .76, Reaper, and Ashe, though Reaper is also Mexican) and Japan has three (Hanzo, Genji, and Kiriko), the Aussies are Junkrat and Junker Queen, and Reaper and Sombra rep Mexico, and the Amaris (Ana and Pharah) rep Egypt. technically, Nepal has two with Ramattra and Zenyatta but Ramattra is voiced by a Singaporean British actor (Ramon Tikaram; Brits who watch TV will recognise him), and Zenyatta is voiced by Feodor Chin (I've been trying to find out more about him but all I can find is 'he's Asian-American').

Actually, OW2 has a bigger player base than it ever had. They cancelled the PvE mode and gave us a short version of it, which includes 3 or 4 locations and each mission is roughly 10 minutes, but that depends on the mode (easy, medium, hard). It's a lot of fun, but a pity It's not longer. The focus remains It's PvP mode and Im sure everyone will agree they are bringing lots of content. Be it the collabs for the skins, small yearly events for every season and additional ones, new maps, heroes, etc. In my opinion, the problem with the game is its dependancy on your allies. One mistake from either you or your teammate can cost your hole team to lose the objective and that creates toxicity, leavers, etc. They are patching heroes constantly, some changes are good and some not so much. All in all, its a Blizzard game. The quality for 95% of the things is top notch, be it the animation, the music, sound, character design, etc. The gameplay is smooth, but lacking some quality of life changes for specific heroes.

Only other I can remember of the top of my head was Battlefield 1 reveal. Its such a shame that the quality of the game didn't match the effort put into these animations

If you do not want to read a paragraph on the lore, don't read this Morrison is the last name of the Soldier guy in the Hero cinematic. Jack Morrison (the guy's full name) was the main commander of Overwatch before they got struck down by the Petras Act (Recall cinematic) The girl with the Crusader guy (Reinhart) is Brigitte. She is the daughter of Torbjorn Lindholm, who has a chair in the ship in the first few seconds. Brigitte could be seen in the Honor and Glory cinematic. The angelic person that healed Mei is a character named Mercy, also known as Angela Ziegler. She was the main doctor for the Overwatch team and has a chair in the ship. The photo shows the following people in order from left to right: Tracer, Torbjorn, Winston, Soldier 76 (Jack Morrrison), Ana Amari (not in any cinematic), Reinhart, Sojourn (in future "sojourn" cinematic), Mercy and Genji (the Dragon of the North Wind). Mei travelled to Watchpoint: Gibraltar (a playable map in Overwatch, an outpost in Antartica) to meet up with Winston and Tracer to fly her back to the rest of the world. When NULL:SECTOR raided Paris, Mei joined Winston and Tracer on their mission to fight back against the robots. The other heroes came late because they were dealing with matters of his own (Genji likely coming back from Japan after the interaction with Hanzo in the Dragons short, Echo arriving after leaving Texas on Cole Cassidy's [aka Jesse McCree] orders, Reinhart and Brigitte after Rein getting the recall message and deciding to join in, driving his truck from Germany all the way to Paris).

@@realtobyg this was a great lore breakdown. I would add this to Kai, please watch hero origin stories, where characters like Ana and others you haven't seen yet, are portrayed and you learn a lot about them. It could be a single video or maybe two, all in all its like 25 min.

One thing kinda missed as well, Mei also looks out of place as the seat she is in, is Reinheart's. With his armor he is quite large much like Winston so they have bigger jump seats near the front of the aircraft.

cant wait for u to see the Kiriko animated short from Overwatch2... its very emotional
@endless_del2 ай бұрын
they focus on morrison and amari's empty seats so much at the beginning because in the story (outside of cinematics) amari has faked her death, and morrison is presumed dead as well. the characters on the ship don't know they're still alive. amari's focus was on the photo because she left behind a daughter (pharah) who will be joining the overwatch organization soon after this event which is a bit of foreshadowing. the cross on mercy's suit is for 2 things. she's a medic and she's swiss!

You're right about the girl who's with Reinhardt. She's the same one from the Honor and Glory cinematic. Her name is Brigitte Lindholm. She's the daughter of Torbjorn, and Reinhardt is her godfather. Both of them were original members of the Overwatch team. She decided to be Reinhardt's squire while he travelled around and fought random bad guys every now and then. She was never part of Overwatch, but she does obviously know some of the people in it, like Tracer shows here. Mercy (Angela Ziegler), the angelic one, was also a member of Overwatch (she's basically the archetypical healer), and she also happens to be a family friend of the Lindholms, so Brigitte probably knew her through her family before Mercy joined Overwatch.

@kai i know it was only one minute but you had the first trailer from early overwatch cinematic universe, and Mercy (the angel healer) was there sparking one of the most productive memes for a while. anyway, i love your content man, i should write more... but let me finish this :D

When this trailer came out, I watched and rewatched it over and over because it's the perfect cocktail of excitement, dread, hope, joy throughout and it's amazing...It's why we were so disappointed when the second game fell apart slowly over time; becoming an addon to 1 instead of its own thing and the reduction and eventual loss single player missions that were promised so far before. Overwatch is such a tragedy, and although it still has people playing it, it's definitely not as loved as it was before, I kinda wish they could make a TV series or movies for this universe, or maybe try making different types of games within the universe. (Like what Riot is doing with League of Legends) I think this still ranks as one of my favourite trailers of all time, maybe just being edged out by Honkai Star Rail's "The Embers of Glamoth" trailer. That trailer was an experience, meshing CG with hand drawn art made such a beautiful work of art.

There was supposed to be Netflix series but: > Blizzard reportedly had an Overwatch Netflix series in development that was canceled due to a lawsuit over the latter poaching an executive from the former. Had Netflix not lured an Activision Blizzard executive away from the company in the middle of their negotiations, Overwatch 2 fans might have been able to enjoy an animated series of their own.

Commenting for the algorithm, but wanted to expand your point about blue color in battle scenes. On top of that desaturated, blue fill you mentioned, the second thing that makes explosions and fire pop is the exposure drop. Fire and explosions are so immensly bright that no camera on the market has enough of a dynamic range to record both the explosion and the set. If they kept the exposure static, any fire in frame would just be a ball of white color, and nothing else. It's just too bright. That's why they drop the camera's exposure, turning the set almost pitch black for a split second just to capture the texture of the fireball. Interestingly enough, this feels natural because consumer cameras usually are set to automatic shutter speed and ISO settings, which means they do this automatically to capture the brightest point in the frame. It's funny, because actual cinema cameras are never set to auto and they would never automatically dim like that. It has to be either intentionally recorded as a separate take on a different setting or the auto setting has to be enabled only for that particular shot (and some cinema cameras don't even have the auto feature).

For being a filmmaker, this guy pays a lot more attention to the visuals than he does to lines and voice acting. Kind of a shame when the best thing Overwatch shorts have going for them is the writing and voice acting.

This is an amazing trailer for a game we unfortunately never got. A lot of us fans were expecting a deeper dive into more story-driven missions filled with more customizable hero abilities as originally advertised, but sadly Overwatch 2 pretty much just because Overwatch 1.5. Coming into Overwatch 2, the game changed to a 'Free To Play' model, sporting a Battlepass and horrible, HORRIBLE monetization, though to give them credit it's better now than it was on launch. Overall though it was a major let down for a lot of people as there was almost basically no changes that were made, and on top of it all, the players that originally owned the first Overwatch game received about 2 skins as a "thank you" which I know quite a few players weren't happy about (the servers were taken offline upon the launch of OW2).
